The fits and starts of "reopening" across the US leave me feeling disjointed, off-kilter, out of sorts. To add to this season of disorientation, I am acutely aware that by now we had hoped to be celebrating the completion of a wonderful joint conference with our strategic partners in Cleveland. Instead, most of us are sheltering in place, spending lots of time on Zoom, in many cases standing on the front lines of this crisis, and carrying all it might mean for the physical and economic health of our programs and communities. I keep hearing Carrie Newcomer's lovely reminder, "
You can do this hard thing

Thank you to all educator who responded to our survey about summer units. Over the past few weeks, we have had an increase in phone calls from students searching for programs that are having summer units, so we are happy to share the list of centers that responded "yes" to our survey. We hope that this will assist students looking for CPE units this summer. As this information was provided to us by the centers, we suggest that prior to sending an application that you contact the center to confirm their plans for the summer unit. Center contact information may be found in our
online directory on the website.
For ACPE Certified Educators, we know that things are changing rapidly, and often on a daily basis, so if your center's plans have changed and you want to be added to the list or need to be removed, please email
Marc Medwed, Associate Executive Director.
We appreciate the work you are doing, now more than ever, and wish you all good health.

Like many CPE programs, Providence St. Joseph Health Southern California System for CPE moved quickly to online services and education as the reality of COVID-19 and the precautions of social distancing came into full view. Our concern was the safety of our residents, modifying our program to fit the current climate and making sure our residents felt supported and equipped to provide spiritual care during this pandemic. The transition was relatively smooth with few adjustments needed to acclimate to a more virtual CPE program.
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we shifted all our class sessions to an online forum. Through Zoom, our residents are still able to participate in our regular CPE group activities as well as receive feedback and support from the CPE educator and fellow residents. In March, our clinical CPE training moved quickly to focus on learning tele-chaplaincy, a form of chaplain outreach that uses phone/video conferencing to provide spiritual care to patients, families, and caregivers. Although tele-chaplaincy is not a new concept, it was a new method of outreach to our CPE program. We drew upon Providence St. Joseph Health's resources to help ease our transition quickly and effectively. We provided background information, research, and training exercises to give our residents' the skills to properly provide spiritual care through tele-chaplaincy. Our curriculum changed to include training techniques on how to continue to convey empathy and compassion even when you are not physically present.

In the midst of these uncertain times, many of us are hungry for information - information that can inform our decisions, help us process what we're experiencing, and connect us with those around us.
The Professional Well-Being Committee is working to gather such resources and make them available to our members. Here you will find articles, videos, and reflections that will bolster our resilience and strengthen our practice in the days and weeks ahead.
If you or your Community of Practice has a resource that you would like to submit to share with our members,
please email

This time has an out-of-sync feeling to me. The question is not "WILL this time have lasting impact?" It is rather, "WHAT will the depth and breadth of impact be on our near and extended futures?"
Perhaps like many of you, I have wept reading the stories of both success and failure for frontline healthcare providers, and the generous responses of individuals and groups toward the people caring for the sick. I've made 'community masks' for friends and family. I've mourned when hearing of the deaths of friends' family members and dread the time I will experience the death of a friend or family member. Only history will measure the magnitude of the losses in life and livelihood in the worldwide community.

Two weeks ago, based on a suggestion from members, ACPE sent a survey out to all educators inquiring about their plans for summer units. As you will see in the graphs below, 180 centers responded, which represent 57% of our accredited centers, so a little more than half of our centers are represented here. The centers that responded are spread out geographically, representing the range of centers that are in areas with a high concentration of COVID-19 patients as well as those that have a more moderate concentration. They also represent large and small programs.

Our Research Team wanted to give an update about the CPE & Emotional Intelligence (EI) research study to the ACPE community. Little did we know the magnitude and effects of the pandemic when we announced our research plans in a
webinar in February.
Since many CPE centers expressed interest in being part of this study, our team considered how to be good stewards of this exciting opportunity to partner with you for a nation-wide study advancing our field. We remain committed to this project while fully aware that you are focused on navigating uncertainties in your CPE programs amid the COVID-19 crisis. Therefore, we have made adjustments to the timeline and have extended the opportunity to join the project.

My daughter has adopted a kind of catch-phrase that seems appropriate in almost every situation. She will spontaneously say, "What is happening?" She doesn't expect an answer; rather, it seems to be her way of identifying that things are off kilter, that what she expected or hoped for is not what is happening, but there is something to which we must pay attention. Perhaps it is even something that will "startle us back to the truth of who we are."
An Evolving Course
by Rumi
We began as a mineral.
We emerged into plant life and into
the animal state, and then to being human.
And always we have forgotten our former states,
except in early spring,
when we dimly recall being green again.
That is how a young person turns
toward a teacher, how a baby leans
toward the breast, without knowing
the secret of its desire,
yet turning instinctively.
So humankind is a being led along
an evolving course through this migration
of intelligences, and though we seem
to be sleeping, there is an inner wakefulness
that directs the dream.
It will eventually startle us back
to the truth of who we are.

These are serious times. They have been politicized in ways that leave many of us feeling deeply disconcerted, troubled about where all of this is headed. And yet - spring comes. Have you noticed the glorious blue sky? Did you hear that the hole in the ozone over Antarctica has shrunk significantly? What is it that sparks your imagination, that keeps you curious about the things close in? Here's a lovely blog post from the good people at The Network for grateful Living:

May 19 Laila Al-Qadr (Islam) Commemorates the night that the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is known as the "Night of Power." Often set on the 27th day of Ramadan, Sunnis may observe it on the 21st, 23rd, 25th or 29th and Shīʿite (Shiite) observe it on the 19th, 21st or 23rd day of Ramadan.
May 21 Ascension Day (Christianity) Celebrated 40 days after Easter/Pascha, it commemorates the ascension of Jesus into Heaven.
Nowruz (Zoroastrian) A traditional ancient Iranian festival celebrating the first day of Spring and the Iranian New Year. Also celebrated as New Year's Day in Baha'i tradition (Naw-Ruz). (This date may vary based on region or sect.)
May 23 Declaration of the Bab (Bahá'Ã) Commemoration of May 23, 1844, when the Báb, the prophet-herald of the Bahá'à Faith, announced in ShÃráz, Persia, that he was the herald of a new messenger of God. The Baha'i Faith is considered to have begun on May 23, 1844, which was the day that the individual known as "The Bab" declared his mission. The world's 5 million Baha'is have basic principles that include belief in the oneness of the human race, the unity of religions, equality of the sexes, and universal peace. Baha'is are followers of Baha'u'llah, who was born in Persia in 1817.
(Begins at sundown on the 23rd) Eid al-Fitr (Islam) The "Feast of the Breaking of the Fast" marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting from dawn until dusk. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Ramadan recognizes Muhammad's revelation from God, as recorded in the Qur'an. During this period, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and time is focused on prayer, charity and self-reflection. On Eid al-Fitr, Muslims celebrate the end of fasting, and thank God for giving them the strength to practice self-control during Ramadan. |
