WHAT will the depth and breadth of impact be on our near and extended futures?
Resources for Advocating for Your CPE Program
Melissa Walker-Luckett
This time has an out-of-sync feeling to me. The question is not "WILL this time have lasting impact?" It is rather, "WHAT will the depth and breadth of impact be on our near and extended futures?"

Perhaps like many of you, I have wept reading the stories of both success and failure for frontline healthcare providers, and the generous responses of individuals and groups toward the people caring for the sick. I've made 'community masks' for friends and family. I've mourned when hearing of the deaths of friends' family members and dread the time I will experience the death of a friend or family member. Only history will measure the magnitude of the losses in life and livelihood in the worldwide community.

Two weeks ago, based on a suggestion from members, ACPE sent a survey out to all educators inquiring about their plans for summer units. As you will see in the graphs below, 180 centers responded, which represent 57% of our accredited centers, so a little more than half of our centers are represented here. The centers that responded are spread out geographically, representing the range of centers that are in areas with a high concentration of COVID-19 patients as well as those that have a more moderate concentration. They also represent large and small programs.

In October 2019, we reported in This Week @ACPE that CHRISTUS Health had opened an educational placement hybrid CPE unit which provided CPE for seven students who minister at CHRISTUS Muguerza (Monterrey, Mexico) and Red de Salud CHRISTUS (Santiago, Chile).

On April 25, 2020, the program hosted a virtual closing ceremony for the CPE unit, extended through this month after hope for an in-person celebration in March (the original end date for the unit) was curtailed by COVID-19 travel and physical distancing realities.

Innovation At Emory Spiritual Health: Compassion-Centered Spiritual Health (CCSH)
Maureen Jenci Shelton

We at Emory Spiritual Health join the brave efforts of spiritual care departments across the globe as we offer care response in proactive and creative ways during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our staff, team of residents, CECs and CCSH fellows (who are appointed in a post-residency two year educational program focused on certification in the CCSHâ„¢ Interventional Approach), are responding to patient and family needs while ever increasing our efforts to staff support as we maintain an onsite presence in our hospitals and clinics 24/7.

Tomorrow is #GivingTuesdayNow!

ACPE Annual Campaign Chair, Brooks Heard, invites you to join him tomorrow, May 5, 2020, for #GivingTuesdayNow (click here to view his video)! This global day of giving and unity is an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

ACPE is joining the movement! We have two goals:

1) raise $5,000 tomorrow from our faithful friends and
2) mobilize 20 people to begin a monthly gift of $20!

All money raised on #GivingTuesdayNow will support projects that help ACPE educators and centers adapt their programs to meet the critical needs of this unprecedented time.

We hope you will join us! For questions, contact ACPE Development Specialist  Jasmine Okafor .

We are committed to providing updates and information as the COVID-19 situation continues via email and the website. We encourage you to monitor the CDC website for additional information.

COVID-19 Resources for Members
In the midst of these uncertain times, many of us are hungry for information - information that can inform our decisions, help us process what we're experiencing, and connect us with those around us.
The Professional Well-Being Committee is working to gather such resources and make them available to our members. Here you will find articles, videos, and reflections that will bolster our resilience and strengthen our practice in the days and weeks ahead.
If you or your Community of Practice has a resource that you would like to submit to share with our members,  please email Katherine Higgins .

In Case You Missed It
ACPE Website Down on May 11-12
On May 11 and 12, 2020, ACPE will perform maintenance on its cloud servers. During this time, the ACPE website will be down. Members will not be able to enroll in CPE units, register CPE credit, access directories, pay invoices, or register for events.
Please prepare to not have access to ACPE's website for two days. Thank you for your understanding and patience while we perform required maintenance to keep our servers updated and safe.
Our Research Team wanted to give an update about the CPE & Emotional Intelligence (EI) research study to the ACPE community. Little did we know the magnitude and effects of the pandemic when we announced our research plans in a webinar  in February.

Since many CPE centers expressed interest in being part of this study, our team considered how to be good stewards of this exciting opportunity to partner with you for a nation-wide study advancing our field. We remain committed to this project while fully aware that you are focused on navigating uncertainties in your CPE programs amid the COVID-19 crisis. Therefore, we have made adjustments to the timeline and have extended the opportunity to join the project.

The Accreditation Commission continues to meet weekly to discuss all things accreditation. As our commissioners are in touch with centers on a regular basis, we understand the extra pressures that many are facing in their programs during these unprecedented times. We want to remind everyone that we are here to support you and to work with you on any areas of concern that you might have. Please don't hesitate to be in touch with your assigned commissioner at any time.

I hope that you are all staying healthy and well during this unprecedented time. The Certification Commission continues to meet on a monthly basis and to support our CECs and the ACPE Certified Educators who are working diligently to maintain their progress in the certification process.
Based on feedback that Commissioners are receiving, we are happy to share that we will be holding a series of Q & A sessions related to the certification processes. These small group sessions will be facilitated by members of the Commission and the ACPE Office and will be an open forum for you to bring your questions.

This Week's Reflection
Sometimes the most powerful poetry isn't born of imaginative metaphors or obscure and layered allusions. It is born of the simple observations of our daily lives. While these times are anything but simple, Jessica Salfia has done something remarkable by simply capturing the first lines of emails she has recently received. They may remind some of the kinds of prayers one often finds in a book of prayer requests in the entryway of a large cathedral or the wailing wall in Jerusalem.

Most of our Something Extra offerings have been fun, light or representative of our colleagues work. This one is different, capturing some of what many of us are feeling. It's under 7 minutes, but it is powerful:

Carolyn Fleming-Dockery is an ACPE Certified Educator from North Carolina.  She wrote a poem entitled, "Hands of the Potter."
Carolyn Fleming-Dockery
Hands of the Potter

Like clay in the hands of the potter,
so are we in your hands,
gracious Lord.
You knit us to together in purpose.
Yet, we are so very different in thought and deed.
Without ceasing,
You, nevertheless,
to mold and shape us into vessels of compassion yearning to serve.

Visakha Puja (Buddhism)
Also known as Vesak or Buddha Day, it marks the birth, spiritual awakening and death (nirvana) of the historical Buddha. (This date may vary based on region or sect.)

May 11
Lag B'Omer (Judaism) (Begins at sundown on the 11th)
Celebrates the end of a divine-sent plague and/or Roman occupation during Rabbi Akiva's lifetime (died c. 135 CE). Lag B'Omer is the 33rd day between the second day of Passover and the holiday of Shavuot. There is altogether a span of 49 days between the two holidays; a time that is traditionally a period of mourning the death of Rabbi Akiba's 24,000 students over 2,000 years ago. By contrast, however, Lag B'Omer is a break in the mourning period and is therefore a time for celebration.
