Finding Peace in the Midst of Chaos
In the dynamic journey of faith within our Church, we often find ourselves seeking solace amidst life's complexities. Let us embark on a contemplative exploration of Psalm 4, resonating with its timeless wisdom and allowing its message to illuminate our modern lives.
Psalm 4 opens with a heartfelt plea: "God, please hear me when I call out to you! I need your help; I've hit rock bottom" (Psalm 4:1, in my own words). In these words, we sense the raw honesty of the psalmist's desperation, a sentiment familiar to many in our uncertain world. How often do we, too, find ourselves crying out for guidance and reassurance in the face of life's challenges?
Yet, amidst the chaos and clamor of our existence, there is a quiet reassurance that God is listening. "You've always come through for me in the past, God," the psalmist recalls (Psalm 4:1, in my own words). This acknowledgment of divine faithfulness echoes through the ages, reminding us that we are never alone in our struggles. Even in our darkest moments, God's love surrounds us, offering comfort and strength.
As we delve deeper into the psalm, we confront the tension between worldly desires and spiritual fulfillment. "How long will you chase after empty promises and false hopes?" the psalmist challenges (Psalm 4:2, in my own words). In a culture obsessed with instant gratification and superficial success, these words pierce through the noise, urging us to reevaluate our priorities and seek meaning beyond material wealth.
At the heart of Psalm 4 lies a profound invitation to find peace amidst life's storms. "I'm going to rest well tonight, knowing you've got me covered, God," the psalmist declares (Psalm 4:8, in my own words). This vision of serenity amidst adversity speaks directly to our modern struggles with anxiety and uncertainty. In a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming, the promise of God's presence offers a beacon of hope, guiding us towards a deeper sense of inner peace.
As we meditate on Psalm 4, may we be reminded of the importance of cultivating a spirit of trust and surrender in our lives. May we find comfort in the knowledge that God is always with us, ready to offer guidance and support. And may we, like the psalmist, discover the restorative power of faith, allowing it to anchor us amidst life's ever-changing tides.
Finally, let us unite in prayer, lifting our hearts to God in gratitude for the timeless wisdom of Psalm 4. May its message resonate deeply within us, inspiring us to seek God's presence in every moment and to trust in God’s unfailing love. May God’s peace, which surpasses all understanding, fill our hearts and minds, guiding us on our journey of faith.

YOUTH GROUP DATES IN APRIL
The Youth group will meet on April 21st to plan for Youth Sunday, which takes place on April 28th. Please come to the church at 6:00 p.m. to finalize music and choose readings. Dinner and games will also take place! April 28th is Youth Sunday with just one service at 10:00 a.m. This will be followed by a pizza party for all who wish to join us downstairs after the service. If possible, bring a salad and/or a dessert to share.
FREE Pilates Class Continues Mondays at 6PM!!
Pilates class is back in session! Please join us Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size at least). Please enter by the children's school doors around back. We meet in Parish Hall. Marcia will be there at 5:30p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is one week from today, on April 21, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. I would like to extend a warm invitation to you for our upcoming Bible study series on the First Letter of St. John! Many members of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension find peace, joy and inspiration outdoors. By planting native plants, we can take part in conserving nature (God’s Creation). When we conserve nature, we are not only taking care of wildlife but we are also taking care of ourselves. Would you like to learn how to create a native garden in your yard? Are you thinking about making a pledge to receive a free native plant starter kit for your garden? Then you will want to join the National Wildlife Federation virtually from 7:30p.m. on Thursday, May 2nd to learn from experts about how you can create a wildlife habitat and protect our local streams by planting native plants. Some of the tips you will learn:

TENDING OUR SOIL
The Tending Our Soil (TOS) team has been working on updating the Mission and Vision statements of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension for the past year as part of the TOS program. TOS has utilized guidance set forth in documents from The Episcopal Diocese of Washington, focusing on the why, the what, and the how we serve God at Ascension. Questions which guided us include:
· What is our purpose?
· How do you live out that purpose?
· Who is entrusted to your care?
· What are your guiding values?
Utilizing discussion and prayer, TOS has formulated the following proposed statements:
Proposed Mission Statement
“We Represent Christ Wherever We May Be.”/ “Representamos a Cristo Donde Quiera Que Vayamos”.
Proposed Vision Statement
To carry forth Christ’s work, The Church of the Ascension will become a community of faith where each one of us lives out our Baptismal Covenant at home, at work, and in the community. Together we will shine as if we were God’s only light in the world.
Request for Feedback
Because the Mission and Vision statements affect every member of Ascension, TOS is offering a response period for the congregation to field their feedback for the proposed Mission and Vision statements.
To that end, there will be a survey set up to guide feedback to the proposed Mission and Vision statements. This survey will run from March 24, 2024 through April 21, 2024, and will be available online.
The results of the survey will be used in a discussion with the Vestry and TOS at the end of April 2024 or early May 2024.
As your write your feedback, in addition to the four questions above, keep in mind courageous humility. We work with love, not desperation.

Are you interested in hearing about pressing justice and public safety issues in Montgomery County? Are you curious how arrests and incarceration have been established as the default response to social issues? Do you want to learn how we, as followers of Jesus, can bring about robust restorative change, acting on the principle “Care, Not Punishment”?
Join the Ascension Equity & Justice Committee for a talk with Rudy Logan, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington’s Missioner for Equity & Justice, supporting its work on reparations, migrant justice, creation care, and gun violence prevention. In his talk he will locate his personal experience within the historical context of policing, incarceration, and social transformation.
Raised in Silver Spring, Rudy earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from St. John's University and a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has experience in community engagement efforts for racial equity and social justice–including educational programming, advancing restorative alternatives to incarceration, prison ministry, grassroots campaigns against punishment in schools, and the criminal legal system.
Rudy's driving motivation is to create a world where we maximize everyone's opportunity to flourish and live abundantly well. Hear him on Thursday, April 25, at 7:00 pm via Zoom.

Encontrar la paz en medio del caos
En el dinámico camino de la fe dentro de nuestra Iglesia, a menudo nos encontramos buscando consuelo en medio de las complejidades de la vida. Embarquémonos en una exploración contemplativa del Salmo 4, resonando con su sabiduría intemporal y permitiendo que su mensaje ilumine nuestras vidas modernas.
El Salmo 4 se abre con una sentida súplica: "¡Dios, por favor, escúchame cuando te invoco! Necesito tu ayuda; he tocado fondo" (Salmo 4:1, en mis propias palabras). En estas palabras, percibimos la cruda honestidad de la desesperación del salmista, un sentimiento familiar para muchos en nuestro incierto mundo. ¿Con qué frecuencia nos encontramos nosotros también clamando por guía y consuelo ante los retos de la vida?
Sin embargo, en medio del caos y el clamor de nuestra existencia, existe la tranquila seguridad de que Dios nos escucha. "Siempre has salido en mi ayuda en el pasado, Dios", recuerda el salmista (Salmo 4:1, en mis propias palabras). Este reconocimiento de la fidelidad divina resuena a través de los tiempos, recordándonos que nunca estamos solos en nuestras luchas. Incluso en nuestros momentos más oscuros, el amor de Dios nos rodea, ofreciéndonos consuelo y fortaleza.

NUESTROS TERRENOS SAGRADOS PARTE 2
Muchos miembros de la Iglesia Episcopal de la Ascensión encuentran paz, alegría e inspiración al aire libre. Al plantar plantas autóctonas, podemos participar en la conservación de la naturaleza (la Creación de Dios). Cuando conservamos la naturaleza, no sólo estamos cuidando de la vida silvestre, sino también de nosotros mismos. ¿Le gustaría aprender a crear un jardín autóctono en su jardín? ¿Está pensando en comprometerse a recibir un kit gratuito de plantas autóctonas para su jardín? Entonces querrá unirse a la Federación Nacional de Vida Silvestre virtualmente a partir de las 7:30 p.m. el jueves 2 de mayo para aprender de expertos sobre cómo puede crear un hábitat para la vida silvestre y proteger nuestros arroyos locales plantando plantas nativas. Criado en Silver Spring (Maryland), Rudy Logan es Misionero para la Equidad y la Justicia en la Diócesis Episcopal de Washington, apoyando su labor en materia de reparaciones, justicia para los inmigrantes, cuidado de la creación y prevención de la violencia armada. Es licenciado en Justicia Penal por la Universidad St. John's y tiene un máster en Divinidad por el Seminario Teológico de Princeton, con especialización en religión y sociedad. Además, Rudy cuenta con casi una década de experiencia en esfuerzos de compromiso comunitario en favor de la equidad racial y la justicia social, que incluyen, entre otros, la programación educativa, la promoción de alternativas restaurativas al encarcelamiento, la pastoral penitenciaria, las campañas de base contra el castigo en las escuelas y el sistema jurídico penal. La motivación que impulsa a Rudy es crear un mundo en el que maximicemos las oportunidades de todos para prosperar y vivir en abundancia.
En su charla, Rudy hablará de los acuciantes problemas de la justicia penal y la seguridad pública en el condado de Montgomery, Maryland.
