For April 24 we will read the first half of chapter 4 of The Misunderstood Jew, by Amy-Jill Levine. We will read to the end of page 142. Also, several of us have read chapter 7, which is a recap of the premise of the book. All are encouraged to read chapter 7 now, as it will help us understand what the author is trying to teach.

YOUTH GROUP DATES IN APRIL

The next (and last) Youth Group of Spring 2024 will be on April 21st. It is also the last youth group before Youth Sunday. We will meet on Saturday April 27th for a dry run and to decorate the undercroft for Youth Sunday. Reminder Youth Sunday is April 28^th.

FREE PILATES CLASS CONTINUES MONDAYS AT 6PM

Pilates class is back in session! Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size at least). Please enter by the children's school doors in the back. We meet in the Parish Hall. Marcia will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. Questions contact Marcia at marcia.noble27@gmail.com.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is one week from today, on April 21, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY

 I would like to extend a warm invitation to you for our upcoming Bible study series on the First Letter of St. John! Join us as we delve into the rich teachings and timeless wisdom found within this profound epistle. Throughout our study, we will explore the themes of love, fellowship, and the assurance of salvation as articulated by the apostle St. John. By planting native plants, we can take part in conserving nature (God’s Creation). When we conserve nature, we are not only taking care of wildlife, but we are also taking care of ourselves. Would you like to learn how to create a native garden in your yard? TENDING OUR SOIL

The Tending Our Soil (TOS) team has been working on updating the Mission and Vision statements of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension for the past year as part of the TOS program. TOS has utilized guidance set forth in documents from The Episcopal Diocese of Washington, focusing on the why, the what, and the how we serve God at Ascension. Questions which guided us include:

·        What is our purpose?

·        How do you live out that purpose?

·        Who is entrusted to your care?

·        What are your guiding values?

Utilizing discussion and prayer, TOS has formulated the following proposed statements:

Proposed Mission Statement

“We Represent Christ Wherever We May Be.”/ “Representamos a Cristo Donde Quiera Que Vayamos”.

Proposed Vision Statement

To carry forth Christ’s work, The Church of the Ascension will become a community of faith where each one of us lives out our Baptismal Covenant at home, at work, and in the community. Together we will shine as if we were God’s only light in the world.

Request for Feedback

Because the Mission and Vision statements affect every member of Ascension, TOS is offering a response period for the congregation to field their feedback for the proposed Mission and Vision statements.

To that end, there will be a survey set up to guide feedback to the proposed Mission and Vision statements. This survey will run from March 24, 2024 through April 21, 2024, and will be available online.

The results of the survey will be used in a discussion with the Vestry and TOS at the end of April 2024 or early May 2024.

As your write your feedback, in addition to the four questions above, keep in mind courageous humility. We work with love, not desperation.

Are you interested in hearing about pressing justice and public safety issues in Montgomery County, Maryland? Are you curious how arrests and incarceration have been established as the default response to social issues? Do you want to learn how we, as followers of Jesus, can bring about robust restorative change, acting on the principle “Care, Not Punishment”?

Join the Church of Ascension Equity & Justice Committee for a talk with Rudy Logan, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington Missioner for Equity & Justice, supporting its work on reparations, migrant justice, creation care, and gun violence prevention. In his talk he will locate his personal experience within the historical context of policing, incarceration, and social transformation. He will also describe the mission and direction of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington’s equity and justice efforts.

Raised in Silver Spring, Rudy earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from St. John's University and a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has experience in community engagement efforts for racial equity and social justice–including educational programming, advancing restorative alternatives to incarceration, prison ministry, grassroots campaigns against punishment in schools, and the criminal legal system.



Rudy's driving motivation is to create a world where we maximize everyone's opportunity to flourish and live abundantly well. Hear him on Thursday, April 25, at 7:00 pm via Zoom!

Kitchen Help Is Needed Please!!!!

It’s been a while since we have used our kitchen on a regular basis. In the past it has been a great place for us to meet for fellowship and for fund raising. Our kitchen needs a lot of love to be used for any food functions the Church does.

We need the proper equipment and some arranging and labeling so everyone knows where everything is. We also need to remind folks that when using the kitchen, it should be left in clean condition and ready for the next function. It’s not fair to do Coffee Hour after service and need to wash everything before you can set up or even use the sinks. 

We have two functions on the calendar for the next two months that require use of the kitchen and I think we can get it to a place where it’s in better condition.

I would like to ask those interested in helping to meet me on Saturday April 27 at 9:30 AM in the kitchen. We will do an inventory of items we have and can use, and items that are not usable and need to be replaced.

I would like a second meeting on May 11 at 9:30 AM, I realize this is before Mother’s Day but if you can come great!  This meeting will be to make sure we are ready to go for our Tamali function.

¿Le interesa conocer los problemas acuciantes en materia de justicia y seguridad pública en el condado de Montgomery, Maryland? ¿Siente curiosidad por saber cómo los arrestos y el encarcelamiento se han establecido como la respuesta por defecto a los problemas sociales? ¿Quiere aprender cómo nosotros, como seguidores de Jesús, podemos provocar un cambio restaurador sólido, actuando según el principio "Cuidado, no castigo"? 

Únase al Comité de Equidad y Justicia de la Iglesia de la Ascensión para asistir a una charla con Rudy Logan, Misionero para la Equidad y la Justicia de la Diócesis Episcopal de Washington, que apoya su labor en materia de reparaciones, justicia para los inmigrantes, cuidado de la creación y prevención de la violencia armada. En su charla situará su experiencia personal en el contexto histórico de la policía, el encarcelamiento y la transformación social. También describirá la misión y la dirección de los esfuerzos de equidad y justicia de la Diócesis Episcopal de Washington.

Criado en Silver Spring, Rudy obtuvo una licenciatura en Justicia Penal por la Universidad de St. John y un máster en Divinidad por el Seminario Teológico de Princeton. Tiene experiencia en esfuerzos de compromiso comunitario a favor de la equidad racial y la justicia social, incluyendo la programación educativa, el fomento de alternativas restaurativas al encarcelamiento, la pastoral penitenciaria, las campañas de base contra el castigo en las escuelas y el sistema jurídico penal.

¡¡¡¡Se necesita ayuda en la cocina por favor!!!!

Hace tiempo que no utilizamos nuestra cocina de forma regular. En el pasado ha sido un gran lugar para reunirnos para compartir y para recaudar fondos. Nuestra cocina necesita mucho amor para ser usada para cualquier función de comida que la Iglesia haga.

Necesitamos el equipo adecuado y algo de ordenación y etiquetado para que todo el mundo sepa dónde está cada cosa. También necesitamos recordar a la gente que cuando se utiliza la cocina, debe dejarse en condiciones de limpieza y lista para la siguiente función. No es justo hacer la Hora del Café después del servicio y tener que lavarlo todo antes de poder montarlo o incluso utilizar los fregaderos.  

Tenemos dos funciones en el calendario para los próximos dos meses que requieren el uso de la cocina y creo que podemos conseguir que esté en mejores condiciones. 

Me gustaría pedir a los interesados en ayudar que se reúnan conmigo el sábado 27 de abril a las 9:30 de la mañana en la cocina. Haremos un inventario de los artículos que tenemos y podemos utilizar, y de los artículos que no son utilizables y necesitan ser reemplazados.

- Algo de limpieza (por favor traiga materiales de limpieza)

- Reorganizar los armarios y algunas funciones de la cocina 

¡Me gustaria una segunda reunion el 11 de Mayo a las 9:30 AM, me doy cuenta que es antes del dia de la madre pero si pueden venir genial! Esta reunión será para asegurarnos de que estamos listos para nuestra función de Tamali.  

Si la gente siente que debemos hacer esto en las tardes durante la semana por favor hágamelo saber y podemos hacer eso.
