WHAT COMES AFTER EASTER SUNDAY?
It was so wonderful to spend Holy Week and then Easter Sunday with so many of you! In addition to everyone that Padre Javier thanked, I want to take a moment and acknowledge and thank him for all he did to make all the services especially meaningful. He put his heart (and soul) into each and every day.
And before I share with you some thoughts on what comes next after Easter Sunday, I want to give a big shout out to Kay Kolle and the Green Team — Clay Kolle, Randall Adams, Gail Unterberger, Megan Didavi, Diane Leach, Linda Waters and other Green Team members for being honored by the City of Gaithersburg on Monday for their amazing environmental work.
So, what does come after Easter Sunday? I found this on the website of St. Peter’s in Vancouver, British Columbia and I liked it so much I wanted to share it with you:
We seem to get Lent as a church. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that we practice Lent perfectly as a church (that’s simply not possible). But as a church, we tend to excel at reflective practices. Lent is a time of laying things aside, to create more space for Christ in our lives — to develop practices that open us up to the present risen-ness of Jesus. We spend 40 days in the wilderness, searching our souls, failing, and resting in grace. It all leads up to Easter, where we celebrate our hearts out until they overflow with joy.
Yet it seems like we put more energy into Lent than Easter. We spend forty days preparing for Easter, and then celebrate Easter as if it’s a single day. But Easter isn’t just a day. Did you know that? In the Christian Calendar it is a season that lasts 50 days! In other words: the next 50 days should be celebrated as a single joyful feast. The celebration shouldn’t temper down, rather it’s only just begun.
We are heading into Eastertide (or Easter Season, or Easter Time or Paschaltide — all of them work!). This is a period of fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday. It’s a time to remember that Jesus wasn’t in a rush to ascend, but that he spent time appearing to his disciples and preparing them for Pentecost. This is an extended time, then, to joyfully celebrate the resurrection. After all, the resurrection changes everything. St. Paul even writes, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:14).
Easter is a big deal. Consider what Pope John Paul II said, “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.”
The writing goes on to provide some suggestions or practices for the next 50 days (40 for Easter + 10 until Pentecost). Interestingly enough, these all sound a bit like Lenten practices, but they are now infused with the glory of the resurrection. Here are just a few: 1. Abide with Jesus — read the Easter story or any other favorite story of Jesus’s ministry; 2. Rejoice and focus on what is good; 3. Cultivate gratitude and thanksgiving; 4. Encourage someone who needs to be uplifted or see the light of Christ shine through you; or 5. Simply ask for Joy.
So please take this Eastertide to continue to be Easter people and remember to repeat the refrain: “Alleluia, Christ is risen; The Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia!!!”

YOUTH GROUP DATES IN APRIL
The Youth group will meet today, April 7th and again on April 21st to plan for Youth Sunday which takes place on April 28th. Please come to the church at 6:00 p.m. to finalize music and choose readings. Dinner and games will also take place!
April 28th is Youth Sunday with just one service at 10:00 a.m. This will be followed by a pizza party for all who wish to join us downstairs after the service. If possible, bring a salad and/or a dessert to share.
TENDING OUR SOIL
The Tending Our Soil (TOS) team has been working on updating the Mission and Vision statements of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension for the past year as part of the TOS program. TOS has utilized guidance set forth in documents from The Episcopal Diocese of Washington, focusing on the why, the what, and the how we serve God at Ascension. Questions which guided us include:
· What is our purpose?
· How do you live out that purpose?
· Who is entrusted to your care?
· What are your guiding values?
Utilizing discussion and prayer, TOS has formulated the following proposed statements:
Proposed Mission Statement
“We Represent Christ Wherever We May Be.”/ “Representamos a Cristo Donde Quiera Que Vayamos”.
Proposed Vision Statement
To carry forth Christ’s work, The Church of the Ascension will become a community of faith where each one of us lives out our Baptismal Covenant at home, at work, and in the community. Together we will shine as if we were God’s only light in the world.
Request for Feedback
Because the Mission and Vision statements affect every member of Ascension, TOS is offering a response period for the congregation to field their feedback for the proposed Mission and Vision statements.
To that end, there will be a survey set up to guide feedback to the proposed Mission and Vision statements. This survey will run from March 24, 2024 through April 21, 2024, and will be available online.
The results of the survey will be used in a discussion with the Vestry and TOS at the end of April 2024 or early May 2024.
As your write your feedback, in addition to the four questions above, keep in mind courageous humility. We work with love, not desperation.

Are you curious how arrests and incarceration have been established as the default response to social issues? Do you want to learn how we, as followers of Jesus, can bring about robust restorative change, acting on the principle “Care, Not Punishment”?
Join the Ascension Equity & Justice Committee for a talk with Rudy Logan, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington’s Missioner for Equity & Justice, supporting its work on reparations, migrant justice, creation care, and gun violence prevention. In his talk he will locate his personal experience within the historical context of policing, incarceration, and social transformation.
Raised in Silver Spring, Rudy earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from St. John's University and a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has experience in community engagement efforts for racial equity and social justice–including educational programming, advancing restorative alternatives to incarceration, prison ministry, grassroots campaigns against punishment in schools, and the criminal legal system.
Rudy's driving motivation is to create a world where we maximize everyone's opportunity to flourish and live abundantly well. Hear him on Thursday, April 25, at 7:00 pm via Zoom.

¿Qué viene después del Domingo de Resurrección?
Fue tan maravilloso pasar la Semana Santa y luego el Domingo de Pascua con tantos de ustedes. Además de todos a los que el Padre Javier dio las gracias, quiero tomarme un momento y reconocer y agradecerle todo lo que hizo para que todos los servicios fueran especialmente significativos. Puso su corazón (y su alma) en todos y cada uno de los días.
Y antes de compartir con ustedes algunos pensamientos sobre lo que viene después del Domingo de Resurrección, quiero dar un gran aplauso a Kay Kolle y al Equipo Verde - Clay Kolle, Randall Adams, Gail Unterberger, Megan Didavi, Diane Leach, Linda Waters y otros miembros del Equipo Verde por haber sido honrados por la Ciudad de Gaithersburg el lunes por su increíble trabajo medioambiental.
Entonces, ¿qué viene después del Domingo de Resurrección? Encontré esto en la página web de San Pedro de Vancouver, en la Columbia Británica, y me gustó tanto que quise compartirlo con ustedes:
Parece que la Cuaresma nos supera como iglesia. No me malinterprete, no estoy diciendo que practiquemos la Cuaresma a la perfección como iglesia (eso simplemente no es posible). Pero como iglesia, tendemos a sobresalir en las prácticas reflexivas. La Cuaresma es un tiempo para dejar las cosas a un lado, para crear más espacio para Cristo en nuestras vidas - para desarrollar prácticas que nos abran al presente resucitado de Jesús. Pasamos 40 días en el desierto, escudriñando nuestras almas, fracasando y descansando en la gracia. Todo conduce a la Pascua, donde celebramos con el corazón hasta desbordarlo de alegría.
Sin embargo, parece que ponemos más energía en la Cuaresma que en la Pascua. Pasamos cuarenta días preparándonos para la Pascua, y luego celebramos la Pascua como si fuera un solo día. Pero la Pascua no es sólo un día. ¿Lo sabía? En el calendario cristiano es una estación que dura ¡50 días! En otras palabras: los próximos 50 días deben celebrarse como una única fiesta gozosa. La celebración no debe atemperarse, más bien acaba de empezar.
Nos adentramos en el Tiempo Pascual (o Temporada de Pascua, o Tiempo de Pascua o Paschaltide - ¡todos valen!). Se trata de un periodo de cincuenta días desde el Domingo de Resurrección hasta el Domingo de Pentecostés. Es un tiempo para recordar que Jesús no tenía prisa por ascender, sino que dedicó tiempo a aparecerse a sus discípulos y a prepararlos para Pentecostés. Es un tiempo, pues, para celebrar con alegría la resurrección. Al fin y al cabo, la resurrección lo cambia todo. San Pablo incluso escribe: "Si Cristo no ha resucitado, vana es nuestra predicación y vana es vuestra fe" (1 Corintios 15:14).
La Pascua es algo grande. Considere lo que dijo el Papa Juan Pablo II: "No se abandonen a la desesperación. Somos el pueblo de Pascua y el aleluya es nuestro canto".
El escrito continúa con algunas sugerencias o prácticas para los próximos 50 días (40 para Pascua + 10 hasta Pentecostés). Curiosamente, todas ellas suenan un poco como prácticas de Cuaresma, pero ahora están impregnadas de la gloria de la resurrección. He aquí algunas: 1. Permanezca con Jesús - lea la historia de Pascua o cualquier otra historia favorita del ministerio de Jesús; 2. Regocíjese y céntrese en lo que es bueno; 3. Cultive la gratitud y la acción de gracias; 4. Anime a alguien que necesite ser elevado o vea brillar la luz de Cristo a través de usted; o 5. Simplemente pida Alegría. Simplemente pida Alegría.
Así que, por favor, aproveche este tiempo pascual para seguir siendo gente de Pascua y recuerde repetir el estribillo: "¡Aleluya, Cristo ha resucitado; El Señor ha resucitado de verdad, Aleluya!!!" Con cariño, Tracey

Criado en Silver Spring (Maryland), Rudy Logan es Misionero para la Equidad y la Justicia en la Diócesis Episcopal de Washington, apoyando su labor en materia de reparaciones, justicia para los inmigrantes, cuidado de la creación y prevención de la violencia armada. Es licenciado en Justicia Penal por la Universidad St. John's y tiene un máster en Divinidad por el Seminario Teológico de Princeton, con especialización en religión y sociedad. Además, Rudy cuenta con casi una década de experiencia en esfuerzos de compromiso comunitario en favor de la equidad racial y la justicia social, que incluyen, entre otros, la programación educativa, la promoción de alternativas restaurativas al encarcelamiento, la pastoral penitenciaria, las campañas de base contra el castigo en las escuelas y el sistema jurídico penal. La motivación que impulsa a Rudy es crear un mundo en el que maximicemos las oportunidades de todos para prosperar y vivir en abundancia.
En su charla, Rudy hablará de los acuciantes problemas de la justicia penal y la seguridad pública en el condado de Montgomery, Maryland.
