HOW ARE YOUR FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS USED?
If you are anything like I was, prior to being on the Vestry, I am sure you have wondered how the money you donate to Ascension is used. I hope to answer that question with the following information. Please keep in mind that we are responsible for maintaining three structures, the main church/education wing, the chapel and Ascension House. In addition to all the things that you would expect your money to go toward such as salaries, utilities, property taxes, and insurance there are several thousands of dollars in expenses you may not have anticipated. For example, we have the maintenance contracts for the elevator, organ, fire alarm panels in the church and chapel, and HVAC systems. In addition, we have contracts for pest control and landscaping. The total cost of all these expenses for the first half of this year was $15,987.
In addition to the routine maintenance of all buildings on campus, there are the repair costs. During the first half of this year, we have done the following repairs: planed the inside doors to the undercroft to allow them to close properly, fixed the toilets in the bathroom used by Sandy Ridge Academy, replaced the faucet in the sacristy, fixed the closure on one of the exterior doors so that it closes properly. We made repairs to the interior and exterior lighting, and the fire alarm panels in the chapel and the main church. We also paid to install locks on the bathroom doors downstairs to ensure that those bathrooms are only used by the school. This will allow us to charge them for any future plumbing issues. The total cost for these repairs was $7,308.
There were also repairs to the HVAC system. This winter we began having problems with the VAV boxes in our HVAC system. It became clear at that point that we were going to need a new system, so we began that process. However, we needed to make repairs to the current system to keep it functioning at a minimum level. That cost was $4, 095.
We budget for facilities maintenance and repairs. Randall Adams uses his many years of experience as the facilities manager at Wesley Seminary to determine what our costs might be. At this point we have spent approximately 54% of our budget. I want to take this opportunity to thank Randall for all his hard work. He doesn’t just give us a budget. He is at the church almost every day. Doing work and making repairs that we are never billed for, monitoring our utility costs and looking for ways to reduce them. We recently installed lock boxes over the thermostats in Ascension House so that we, not the tenants, control the temperature. Randall does a lot of research so that the vestry makes well informed decisions regarding contracts and repairs. I am confident in saying that without Randall’s efforts our expenses would be greater.
How can you help? We need to increase our revenue. One way to do this is to help with fundraising event like the yard sale. Our next yard sale is Saturday August 17, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. The yard sale will include a bake sale and carwash. Please come and help. I will post a signup sheet for helpers next Sunday. If you do not have time to help, please come by, look over the items for sale, get your car washed, and buy a snack.

MAINTENANCE WORK AT ASCENSION
The maintenance work continues in the main church. The office is open but if you must come during the workweek (Monday through Friday) during office hours, please call in advance and let our office administrator Julie know. While the work is in progress, the side door will not be available to access. This is for everyone's safety. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

BIBLE STUDY IN ENGLISH
Due to the repairs in the church, we will have to reschedule the Bible study in English. We will be starting again in September, or sooner if we have access to the library.
ACOLYTES
Ascension needs acolytes at the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays. We’ve already had one response (thank you!) but we really need another two or three.For school age volunteers (5th grade through high school) sign up now, and you won’t be actually scheduled until school starts or until you let us know otherwise. Adult acolytes are warmly welcomed. Consider trying it out - it isn’t difficult, and training will be provided. Let Padre Javier know that you are interested; we will contact you and the process will begin.
THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The next Men’s Shelter lunch program will be on August 18, at 9:00 a.m. The program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com
YARD SALE
Thank you to everyone who dropped off donations to the yard sale last Saturday. Also, thank you to everyone who came last Saturday to clear the donations out of the library and help with the sorting. If you missed this opportunity and want to get in on the fun, we will be accepting donations and sorting on August 10 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. You can also drop your donation off at the church during the week. Please call to confirm that Julie will be there to meet you We also need help with sorting (week of August 12), providing bake sale items, and helping on the day of the sales. We especially need people to set up (6:30 -8:00 a.m.) and clean up (2:00-3:30 p.m.). If you have a pickup truck or van and can help move items that don’t sell down to Goodwill, that would be much appreciated.
BAKE SALE
I’ve been asked to find the best bakers at Ascension!
During the yard sale, we will also have a bake sale. We need some great cookies, brownies, breads, cupcakes and a few folks to help sell them.
The bake sale will be held on Saturday August 17 during the yard sale hours so we will need five or six good people available to sit at our bake sale table and sell the goodies. If you can, please let me know. There is a signup sheet in the hallway.
Bake sale goodies must be delivered to the Church the previous day, Friday, August 16 between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., to the lower level doors (back of the church).

¿CÓMO SE UTILIZAN SUS APORTACIONES ECONÓMICAS?
Si usted es como yo, antes de formar parte de la Junta Parroquial, estoy seguro de que se ha preguntado cómo se utiliza el dinero que dona a la Ascensión. Espero responder a esa pregunta con la siguiente información. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que somos responsables del mantenimiento de tres estructuras, la iglesia principal/ ala educativa, la capilla y la Casa de la Ascensión. Además de todas las cosas a las que usted esperaría que se destinara su dinero, como salarios, servicios públicos, impuestos sobre la propiedad y seguros, hay varios miles de dólares en gastos que quizá no haya previsto. Por ejemplo, tenemos los contratos de mantenimiento del ascensor, el órgano, los paneles de alarma contra incendios de la iglesia y la capilla y los sistemas de climatización. Además, tenemos contratos para el control de plagas y el paisajismo. El coste total de todos estos gastos para el primer semestre de este año fue de 15.987 dólares.

Ascensión necesita acólitos en el servicio de las 10 de la mañana los domingos. Ya hemos recibido una respuesta (¡gracias!), pero realmente necesitamos otros dos o tres.Para los voluntarios en edad escolar (desde5º curso hasta bachillerato) inscríbete ahora, y no se te programará realmente hasta que empiecen las clases o hasta que nos avises de lo contrario. Los acólitos adultos son bienvenidos. Considera la posibilidad de probar: no es difícil y se proporcionará formación. Haz saber al Padre Javier que estás interesado; nos pondremos en contacto contigo y comenzará el proceso.
PROGRAMA DE COMIDAS DEL ALBERGUE PARA HOMBRES
El próximo programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres será el 18 de agosto, a las 9:00 a.m. El programa proporciona almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Los generosos miembros de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proporcionamos entre 40 y 80 almuerzos al mes. Ven al sótano y ayuda a preparar los bocadillos y las bolsas de comida. Y, por favor, considera la posibilidad de aportar provisiones, aunque no puedas estar allí para ayudar a embolsar. VENTA DE JARDÍN
