Happy New Year!

As we step into the new year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on where we have been, where we are, and where we hope to go—together, as a church family, as a nation, and as citizens of this world.

The past year has brought with it challenges that have tested our resilience and our faith. From ongoing political divisions and economic uncertainties to global crises like wars and the effects of climate change, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Many of us have faced personal struggles—loss, health issues, or the weight of anxiety about what the future holds. Yet, in the midst of these challenges, I have also seen the unmistakable presence of hope and the hand of God at work in our lives.

The Gospel reminds us that even in the darkest times, we are never abandoned. The prophet Isaiah tells us, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelled in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.” (Isaiah 9:2) This light—the light of Christ—is what guides us as we navigate the complexities of our world and our lives. It is a light that no darkness can extinguish, a source of peace and comfort that surpasses all understanding.

As we turn the page to 2025, I invite you to embrace this new year as a time of renewal—renewal of our faith, our relationships, and our commitment to being instruments of God’s peace in a broken world. It is easy to get caught up in the noise of the news and the pressures of daily life, but we are called to something greater. Jesus tells us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9) Let this be our charge as we move forward.

What does it mean to be peacemakers in a world that feels so divided? It means choosing to listen when it is easier to argue, to forgive when it is easier to hold resentment, and to extend kindness even when it is not reciprocated. It means working for justice, caring for the marginalized, and protecting the vulnerable. These acts of peacemaking begin in our own hearts and homes but ripple outward into our communities and beyond.

Here in our church, we have the gift of walking this journey together. Over the past year, I have been deeply moved by the ways you have shown up for one another—in times of joy and sorrow, through acts of service and generosity, and in prayer. You have embodied what it means to be the Body of Christ, and I have no doubt that God will continue to work through you in powerful ways in the year ahead.

As we look outward, let us also remember our responsibility to be stewards of hope. The world desperately needs people who refuse to give in to despair, who believe in the power of love and the possibility of change. Our faith calls us to be those people—not because we are blind to the challenges around us, but because we trust in a God who makes all things new.

I encourage each of you to set aside time in the coming week to reflect on how you can bring hope and peace to those around you. Perhaps it is through reaching out to someone who is lonely, or you haven’t seen during the year, or committing together to pray for our leaders and for those who suffer. Small acts of faithfulness, done consistently, have the power to transform lives.

Finally, I want to speak to those of you who may be entering this new year with heavy hearts. Please know that you are not alone. This church is a place where you are seen, loved, and supported, and that you can contact me or the Rev. Deacon Rosa or our future Rev. Deacon Tracey if you need anything. Whatever burdens you carry, bring them to God in prayer, and let us walk alongside you. As St. Paul writes his letter to the Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

As we journey into 2025, let us do so with hearts open to the movement of the Spirit, trusting that God is with us every step of the way. Let us be bold in our love, steadfast in our faith, and unwavering in our hope. Together, we can be a beacon of light in a world that so desperately needs it.

COMPLINE SERVICE – WEDNESDAYS 9:00 P.M.

Our Compline service is held every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. via Zoom. Join us for this peaceful and reflective evening service each week. Note: There will be no Compline on January 1. We look forward to seeing you at our next service!

AEJC STUDY / MEETING THURSDAYS 3:00 P.M.

Ascension's Equity & Justice Committee (AEJC) has started a weekly bible study / community meeting every Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the Ascension library. While we plan to slowly continue our study of Luke, Acts and parts of Thich Nhat Hanh's Living Buddha Living Christ, the meetings are primarily meant to be a space where we put our faith into action. We live in an area that purports to offer many resources for those who are in need or facing adversity; but in reality, there are many barriers to the poor accessing things like county emergency rental assistance or a legal aid lawyer. As Christians we feel called to help our neighbors confront and navigate these barriers, so our Thursdays at 3 meetings will also serve as a safe, non-judgmental space open to our friends and neighbors looking for help. SUNDAY SCHOOL

We won’t have Sunday School or nursery care this week, but the following week, January 5, we’ll have our regular schedule AND the annual Epiphany Pageant at 5:00.

COMFORT CASES

The season of giving is upon us, and once again Comfort Cases in Rockville needs our help for children entering foster care. These children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter. At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their very own.

Please place your donated items in the bin in the hallway near the office. Here are the needed items:

* Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.

* Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XL (many teens need large sizes).

* Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

NOTE: All items should be NEW, and tags should still be attached (when possible). Please, no holiday or religious themes. No toiletries are needed at this time.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Al comenzar este año nuevo, quisiera tomar un momento para reflexionar sobre dónde hemos estado, dónde nos encontramos y hacia dónde esperamos ir, juntos, como familia de la iglesia, como nación y como ciudadanos de este mundo.

El año pasado trajo consigo desafíos que han puesto a prueba nuestra resiliencia y nuestra fe. Desde las divisiones políticas y las incertidumbres económicas en curso, hasta crisis globales como guerras y los efectos del cambio climático, es fácil sentirse abrumados. Muchos de nosotros hemos enfrentado luchas personales como: pérdidas, problemas de salud o el peso de la ansiedad sobre lo que depara el futuro. Sin embargo, en medio de estas dificultades, también he visto la inconfundible presencia de la esperanza y la mano de Dios obrando en nuestras vidas.

El Evangelio nos recuerda que, incluso en los tiempos más oscuros, nunca estamos abandonados. El profeta Isaías nos dice: “El pueblo que andaba en la oscuridad vio una gran luz; una luz ha brillado para los que vivían en tinieblas..” (Isaías 9:2) Esa luz, la luz de Cristo, es la que nos guía mientras navegamos por las complejidades de nuestro mundo y nuestras vidas. Es una luz que ninguna oscuridad puede apagar, una fuente de paz y consuelo que sobrepasa todo entendimiento.

Al pasar la página hacia el 2025, los invito a abrazar este nuevo año como un tiempo de renovación: renovación de nuestra fe, de nuestras relaciones y de nuestro compromiso de ser instrumentos de la paz de Dios en un mundo quebrantado. Es fácil dejarse atrapar por el ruido de las noticias y las presiones de la vida diaria, pero estamos llamados a algo mayor. Jesús nos dice: “Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz, porque Dios los llamará hijos suyos.” (Mateo 5:9) Que este sea nuestro propósito al seguir adelante.

¿Qué significa trabajar por la paz en un mundo que parece tan dividido? Significa elegir escuchar cuando es más fácil discutir, perdonar cuando es más fácil guardar rencor y ofrecer bondad incluso cuando no es correspondida. Significa trabajar por la justicia, cuidar a los marginados y proteger a los más vulnerables. Estos actos de trabajar por la paz comienzan en nuestros propios corazones y hogares, pero se extienden hacia nuestras comunidades y más allá.

Aquí, en nuestra iglesia, tenemos el regalo de caminar este camino juntos. Durante el año pasado, me ha conmovido profundamente la forma en que han estado presentes unos para otros: en tiempos de alegría y tristeza, a través de actos de servicio y generosidad, y sobre todo en la oración. Han encarnado lo que significa ser el Cuerpo de Cristo, y no tengo duda de que Dios seguirá obrando a través de ustedes de maneras poderosas en el próximo año.

Mientras miramos hacia afuera, recordemos también nuestra responsabilidad de ser administradores de esperanza. El mundo necesita desesperadamente personas que se nieguen a rendirse al desaliento, que crean en el poder del amor y en la posibilidad del cambio. Nuestra fe nos llama a ser esas personas, no porque seamos ciegos a los desafíos que nos rodean, sino porque confiamos en un Dios que hace nuevas todas las cosas.

Les animo a que en la próxima semana se tomen un tiempo para reflexionar sobre cómo pueden llevar esperanza y paz a quienes los rodean. Tal vez sea contactando a alguien que está solo o que no han visto durante el año, o comprometiéndose a orar por nuestros líderes y por quienes sufren. Los pequeños actos de fidelidad, hechos de manera constante, tienen el poder de transformar vidas.

Finalmente, quiero dirigirme a aquellos que quizás estén comenzando este nuevo año con corazones abrumados o tristes. Por favor, sepan que no están solos. Esta iglesia es un lugar donde son vistos, amados y apoyados, y que pueden contactarme a mí, a la Reverenda Diácona Rosa o a nuestra futura Reverenda Diácona Tracey si necesitan algo. Cualquiera que sea la carga que lleven, tráiganla a Dios en oración, y permítannos caminar junto a ustedes. Como escribe San Pablo en la carta a los Romanos 15:13: “Que Dios, que da esperanza, los llene de alegría y paz a ustedes que tienen fe en él, y les dé abundante esperanza por el poder del Espíritu Santo.”

Mientras avanzamos hacia el 2025, hagámoslo con corazones abiertos al movimiento del Espíritu, confiando en que Dios está con nosotros en cada paso del camino. Seamos audaces en nuestro amor, firmes en nuestra fe e inquebrantables en nuestra esperanza. Juntos, podemos ser un faro de luz en un mundo que lo necesita desesperadamente.

Les deseo a ustedes y a todos sus seres queridos un año nuevo muy bendecido y lleno de alegría.

ESTUDIO/REUNIÓN AEJC – JUEVES, 3:00 P.M.

El Comité de Equidad y Justicia de la Ascensión (AEJC) ha iniciado un estudio bíblico/reunión comunitaria semanal, todos los jueves a las 3:00 p.m. en la biblioteca de la Ascensión. Aunque planeamos continuar lentamente con nuestro estudio de Lucas, Hechos y partes del libro Living Buddha Living Christ de Thich Nhat Hanh, las reuniones están destinadas principalmente a ser un espacio donde pongamos nuestra fe en acción. Vivimos en una zona que afirma ofrecer muchos recursos para aquellos en necesidad o que enfrentan adversidades; pero en la práctica, hay muchas barreras para que las personas pobres accedan a cosas como asistencia de emergencia para el alquiler del condado o un abogado de ayuda legal.

Como cristianos, sentimos el llamado de ayudar a nuestros vecinos a enfrentar y superar estas barreras, por lo que nuestras reuniones de los jueves a las 3 también serán un espacio seguro y sin juicios, abierto a nuestros amigos y vecinos que busquen ayuda. La temporada de dar está aquí, y una vez más Comfort Cases en Rockville necesita nuestra ayuda para niños que ingresan al sistema de cuidado de crianza. Estos niños han sido descuidados y a menudo sienten que no importan. En Comfort Cases, creemos que todos los niños merecen sentir dignidad. Cada niño merece tener una bolsa especial para guardar sus pertenencias que pueda llamar suya.
