New Year and Epiphany: What Do They Have in Common?
I hope you had a wonderful celebration to welcome this New Year. May it be filled with countless blessings. I invite you to join in prayer for hope, peace, and renewal in the months ahead. The first Sunday of the year is an opportunity to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. It’s fitting that we also celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany—a moment that reminds us of how Christ reveals Himself to the world.
Epiphany is a celebration rich with meaning, marking three key events that revealed Jesus’ divine identity. First is the story of the Magi, the wise men from the East who followed a star to Bethlehem. Their journey was one of faith and courage, and their gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—proclaimed Jesus as a king, divine, and destined for sacrifice. This story reminds us that Christ is the Light of the World, shining for all people everywhere.
Second, Epiphany recalls Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River. As John the Baptist baptized Him, the heavens opened, the Spirit descended like a dove, and God’s voice declared, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” This moment marked the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and affirmed His identity as God’s Son, sent to save us all.
Lastly, we remember the wedding at Cana, where Jesus performed His first miracle by turning water into wine. This act revealed His glory and His desire to bring abundance and joy into people’s lives. It also showed how Jesus transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary—a power that continues to work in our lives today.
These three events remind us of the many ways Christ reveals Himself in our world and in our lives. As we begin this new year, they offer us hope and reassurance that God’s love and light are always present. They encourage us to trust that, no matter what challenges we face, Christ’s presence brings clarity, renewal, and joy.
In our country, we are dealing with many struggles—division, economic uncertainty, and social tensions. Yet, the message of Epiphany inspires us to see beyond the darkness. Like the star that guided the Magi, we are called to follow Christ’s light, trusting it to lead us toward healing and unity. Jesus’ baptism reminds us of God’s affirmation of our worth and purpose, while the miracle at Cana shows that God can bring extraordinary changes even in the most ordinary moments.
As a Church Family, let us commit to being bearers of this light in 2025. Let us show kindness, work for justice, and extend compassion to those in need. Let us pray fervently for our leaders, neighbors, and ourselves, so that we may become instruments of God’s peace in the world.
This year, I invite all of us to go on our own journey of Epiphany. What gifts can we offer to Christ? How can we make His presence known in our lives and communities? How can we allow His transformative power to work through us, bringing joy and abundance to others?
As we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, let us remember God’s incredible gift to us in Jesus Christ. And as we step into this new year, let us carry the light of Epiphany in our hearts and share it with a world longing for hope and renewal.
May God bless you richly in this new year, and may the light of Christ shine brightly in your lives and in our beloved country.

AEJC STUDY / MEETING THURS. 3:00 P.M.
Ascension's Equity & Justice Committee (AEJC) has started a weekly bible study / community meeting every Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the Ascension library. While we plan to slowly continue our study of Luke, Acts and parts of Thich Nhat Hanh's Living Buddha Living Christ, the meetings are primarily meant to be a space where we put our faith into action. We live in an area that purports to offer many resources for those who are in need or facing adversity; but in reality, there are many barriers to the poor accessing things like county emergency rental assistance or a legal aid lawyer. As Christians we feel called to help our neighbors confront and navigate these barriers, so our Thursdays at 3 meetings will also serve as a safe, non-judgmental space open to our friends and neighbors looking for help. SUNDAY SCHOOL
This week, our story returns to Bethlehem for the last time, as the Three Wise Men, or Magi, finally arrive, bearing gifts. We learn about the important symbolism of the gifts they brought.
COMFORT CASES
The season of giving is upon us, and once again Comfort Cases in Rockville needs our help for children entering foster care. These children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter. At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their very own.
Please place your donated items in the bin in the hallway near the office. Here are the needed items:
* Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.
* Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XL (many teens need large sizes).
* Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.
NOTE: All items should be NEW, and tags should still be attached (when possible). Please, no holiday or religious themes. No toiletries are needed at this time.

Año Nuevo y Epifanía: ¿Qué Tienen en Común?
Espero que hayan tenido una celebración maravillosa para dar la bienvenida a este Año Nuevo. Que esté lleno de innumerables bendiciones. Les invito a unirse en oración por esperanza, paz y renovación en los meses por venir. El primer domingo del año es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el pasado y mirar hacia el futuro. Es apropiado que también celebremos la Fiesta de la Epifanía, un momento que nos recuerda cómo Cristo se revela al mundo.
La Epifanía es una celebración llena de significado, que marca tres eventos clave que revelaron la identidad divina de Jesús. El primero es la historia de los Magos, los sabios del Oriente que siguieron una estrella hasta Belén. Su viaje fue uno de fe y valentía, y sus regalos—oro, incienso y mirra—proclamaron a Jesús como rey, divino y destinado al sacrificio. Esta historia nos recuerda que Cristo es la Luz del Mundo, brillando para todas las personas en todas partes.
En segundo lugar, la Epifanía recuerda el bautismo de Jesús en el río Jordán. Mientras Juan el Bautista lo bautizaba, los cielos se abrieron, el Espíritu descendió como una paloma y la voz de Dios declaró: "Este es mi Hijo Amado, en quien me complazco". Nos animan a confiar en que, sin importar los desafíos que enfrentemos, la presencia de Cristo trae claridad, renovación y alegría.
En nuestro país, estamos enfrentando muchas luchas—división, incertidumbre económica y tensiones sociales. Sin embargo, el mensaje de la Epifanía nos inspira a ver más allá de la oscuridad. Como la estrella que guió a los Magos, estamos llamados a seguir la luz de Cristo, confiando en que nos llevará hacia la sanación y la unidad. Que Dios les bendiga abundantemente en este nuevo año, y que la luz de Cristo brille intensamente en sus vidas y en nuestro amado país.

El Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión (AEJC) ha comenzado un estudio bíblico semanal / reunión comunitaria todos los jueves a las 3:00 p.m. en la biblioteca de Ascensión. Aunque planeamos continuar poco a poco nuestro estudio de Lucas, Hechos y partes del libro de Thich Nhat Hanh Vivir Buda Vivir Cristo, las reuniones pretenden principalmente ser un espacio en el que pongamos nuestra fe en acción. Vivimos en una zona que pretende ofrecer muchos recursos a quienes están necesitados o se enfrentan a la adversidad; pero en realidad, existen muchas barreras para que los pobres accedan a cosas como la ayuda de emergencia del condado para el alquiler o un abogado de asistencia jurídica. Como cristianos nos sentimos llamados a ayudar a nuestros vecinos a enfrentarse y sortear estas barreras, por lo que nuestras reuniones de los jueves a las 3 servirán también como un espacio seguro y sin prejuicios abierto a nuestros amigos y vecinos en busca de ayuda.
