“Representar a Cristo Donde Quiera Que Estamos.”

Recently I posted a question to the Facebook group Episcopalians on Facebook. I asked about the meaning and significance of the Prelude and Postlude (also called the Voluntary) in their churches. I was astonished by the range, depth, and passion of the replies I received, especially about congregational attitudes toward the postlude. Some replied that the service ends with the dismissal and response, “Thanks be to God!” and anything that comes after that is just background music to spur the outward mission of the departing congregation. (Or, just as likely, the start of the fellowship hour.) Others claimed that the entire congregation listens to the music as a continuation and summation of the worship just ended, taken as nourishment to the soul and mind before setting out. Others reported a combination of the two, often asserting that the departing parishioners remain respectfully quiet while leaving, saving conversation until they have left the nave.

Perhaps most intriguing were the replies I received from church musicians and their family members. These are some of their comments:

·    The Postlude is the musicians’ prayer.

·    Beloved often feels like a jukebox, if you get my drift.

·    Music is given to the glory of God, to begin and end the service with a direct connection to the divine without words at the deepest level of our humanity.

·    Preludes, interludes, and postludes play no liturgical role and are optional at any time. The purpose is background music like you’d find in a play or movie, not necessarily for the entertainment value.

·    I think this is the one time that the instrumentalist gets to cut loose and show their chops.

·    Let the people chatter and let the organ sound (loudly even). What a magnificent tapestry of sound!!! What a celebration! Those that wish to listen will sit and do so.

·    I program the postlude to form the summation of the day, musically interfaced with theology. It's the 'cherry on top.'

There was more consensus about the purpose of the prelude. Almost all who mentioned the prelude in their comments mentioned its usefulness as a point of focus before worship, a support to silent prayer or meditation. It was not dismissed by anyone as background music, but was respected as a necessary transition from the noise of the outer world to the serenity of the inner sanctuary. 

One thing to keep in mind is that our new Minister of Music, Etienne Zhou, is a superbly skilled pianist. I am thoroughly enjoying the exquisite music he makes on our piano. The next time you shout, “Thanks be to God!” at the end of a service, perhaps stop and listen for a minute or two—or at least keep the conversations low out of consideration for those who do want to listen. You might be astonished, inspired, and refreshed!

We pray for peace in the world and for the victims of war everywhere. We also pray for all who are serving our country here and abroad, especially those in harm’s way, and their families.

We pray for all those affected by, suffering from, and killed by gun violence throughout our country.

The flowers on the altar today are given by Jim and Toni Babcock in honor of Ricky Babcock’s birthday.

We give thanks for the recent birthdays of Kyle Wilks, Audrey French, Cleoval Munroe, Peter Hildebrand, Semera Fahnbulleh, Gabriel Velarde, Andrew Gallagher, Arturo Rodriguez, Jillian Warner, and Anna Beth.

Hace poco publiqué una pregunta en el grupo de Facebook Episcopalians on Facebook. Pregunté sobre el significado y la importancia del Preludio y el Postludio (también llamado el Voluntario) en sus iglesias. Me sorprendió la variedad, profundidad y pasión de las respuestas que recibí, especialmente sobre las actitudes de la congregación hacia el postludio. Algunos respondieron que el servicio termina con la despedida y la respuesta "¡Gracias sean dadas a Dios!" y que todo lo que viene después es sólo música de fondo para estimular la misión exterior de la congregación que se marcha. (Otros afirman que toda la congregación escucha la música como continuación y resumen del culto que acaba de terminar, como alimento para el alma y la mente antes de partir. Otros informaron de una combinación de ambas, afirmando a menudo que los feligreses que se marchan permanecen respetuosamente en silencio mientras se marchan, ahorrando la conversación hasta que han abandonado la nave.

Quizá lo más intrigante fueron las respuestas que recibí de los músicos de la iglesia y sus familiares. Estos son algunos de sus comentarios:

- El postludio es la oración de los músicos.

- Beloved parece a menudo una rocola, no sé si me explico.

- La música se da para gloria de Dios, para comenzar y terminar el servicio con una conexión directa con lo divino sin palabras en el nivel más profundo de nuestra humanidad.

- Los preludios, interludios y postludios no juegan ningún papel litúrgico y son opcionales en cualquier momento. El propósito es música de fondo como la que encontrarías en una obra de teatro o en una película, no necesariamente por el valor de entretenimiento.

- Creo que es el único momento en el que el instrumentista puede soltarse y mostrar sus habilidades.

- Deja que la gente charle y deja que el órgano suene (fuerte incluso). ¡Qué magnífico tapiz sonoro! ¡Qué fiesta! Los que quieran escuchar se sentarán y lo harán.

- Programo el postludio para que forme el resumen del día, interconectado musicalmente con la teología. Es la 'guinda del pastel'.

Hubo más consenso sobre la finalidad del preludio. Casi todos los que mencionaron el preludio en sus comentarios aludieron a su utilidad como punto de concentración antes del culto, como apoyo a la oración silenciosa o a la meditación. Nadie lo descartó como música de fondo, sino que se respetó como una transición necesaria del ruido del mundo exterior a la serenidad del santuario interior.

Hay que tener en cuenta que nuestro nuevo Ministro de Música, Etienne Zhou, es un pianista extraordinariamente hábil. Estoy disfrutando mucho con la exquisita música que hace en nuestro piano. La próxima vez que griten "¡Gracias a Dios!" al final de un servicio, quizá puedan detenerse y escuchar durante uno o dos minutos, o al menos mantener las conversaciones en voz baja por consideración a quienes sí quieren escuchar. Puede que se quede asombrado, inspirado y renovado.
