THE WAY OF LOVE: OUR GUIDING LIGHT
I am taking a class from Virginia Theological Seminary once a month. More than a class, it is a colleagues meeting, where we talk about our challenges and satisfactions in our ministry. We met on Tuesday afternoon and the leaders of our peer group wanted to talk about the event that occurred on Saturday evening. They wanted to know how we dealt with the event and if we talked about it in our congregations. I talked to them about our meeting in the library and how we all prayed and supported each other after the 10:00 a.m. service.
After the meeting on Tuesday, I had some time to reflect and pray. I thought that in these difficult times, it is essential for us, as Ascension family, to come together and reflect on our shared values of love, unity, and understanding. The political landscape of our country may be turbulent, but it is precisely during these periods of uncertainty that we must hold steadfast to the teachings of Christ.
First and foremost, we must remember the importance of being together. Our strength as a community is found in our ability to gather, to support one another, and to find solace in our faith. The act of coming together reaffirms our commitment to each other and to the values we hold dear. When we stick together we are able to face the challenges of the world and the assurance that we are not alone. It is through this unity that we can begin to heal the divisions that have been sown in our society.
Listening to each other is a fundamental aspect of our faith. In James 1:19, we are reminded to be "quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." In a time when voices of anger and division are loud, we must strive to be the calm presence that listens with empathy and seeks to understand. Listening is an act of love and humility. It requires us to put aside our own prejudices and judgments and to hear the stories and experiences of others. By truly listening, we can begin to bridge the gaps that divide us and foster a sense of community that is inclusive and compassionate.
Loving our neighbor is perhaps the most profound commandment we are given. In St. Matthew 22:39, Jesus tells us to "love your neighbor as yourself." This simple yet powerful directive calls us to extend love and kindness to everyone, regardless of their political beliefs, background, or differences. In times of political strife, it is easy to fall into the trap of viewing others as enemies. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to see the humanity in every person and to respond with love and grace. Loving our neighbor means advocating for justice, standing against oppression, and working towards reconciliation. It means being a beacon of hope and light in a world that desperately needs it.
As we navigate these tough times, let us remember that our faith is not just a set of beliefs, but a way of life. Our actions, words, and attitudes should reflect the love of Christ in all that we do. We are called to be peacemakers, bridge builders, and agents of change. This is not an easy task, but it is one that we are equipped for through the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
In practical terms, let us commit to engaging in open and honest conversations with those who may have different perspectives. Let us seek out opportunities to serve our communities, especially those who are most vulnerable. Let us pray fervently for our leaders, for our nation, and for each other. And let us hold fast to the hope that, through our collective efforts, we can create a society that reflects the kingdom of God – a kingdom of justice, peace, and love.
Finally, during these challenging times, we are reminded of the power of being together, listening to each other, and loving our neighbor. Let us embrace these values with renewed vigor and dedication. May we be a source of hope and healing in our country, and may our actions reflect the love of Christ in all that we do.

FREE PILATES CLASS
Pilates class is back in session! Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size, or larger). We meet in the Chapel. Marcia will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. BIBLE STUDY IN ENGLISH
Due to the repairs in the church, we will have to reschedule the Bible study in English. We will be starting again in September, or sooner if we have access to the library.
ACOLYTES
Ascension needs acolytes at the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays. Traditionally, acolytes were young people, from 5th grade through high school. No more! Ascension is open to adult acolytes. We are in dire need. It isn’t difficult, and training will be provided. Let Padre Javier know that you are interested; we will contact you and the process will begin.
THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The July Men’s Shelter lunch program is today, July 21, at 9:00 a.m. The program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program will be on August 18. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. BACK PACKS FOR LINKAGES TO LEARNING
It is that time of year again. We are collecting school supplies to support the Linkages to Learning program at Summit Hall Elementary School, Gaithersburg. The Linkages to Learning Program serves children in underserved communities. Please help these young students get their school year off to a good start by providing school supplies. Please pick up a list in the narthex or on the Ascension website. You do not have to get everything on the list, just do the best you can. All donations are appreciated. Please bring your items to church by Sunday, August 18. Thank you for your support of this project.

EL CAMINO DEL AMOR LA LUZ QUE NOS GUÍA
Estoy tomando una clase del Seminario Teológico de Virginia una vez al mes. Más que una clase, es una reunión de colegas, donde hablamos de nuestros retos y satisfacciones en nuestro ministerio. Nos reunimos el martes por la tarde y los líderes de nuestro grupo de colegas querían hablar sobre el suceso que ocurrió el sábado por la noche. Querían saber cómo habíamos afrontado el suceso y si habíamos hablado de ello en nuestras congregaciones. Les hablé de nuestra reunión en la biblioteca y de cómo todos oramos y nos apoyamos después del servicio de las 10 de la mañana.
Después de la reunión del martes, tuve tiempo para reflexionar y orar. Pensé que en estos tiempos difíciles, es esencial para nosotros, como familia de la Ascensión, reunirnos y reflexionar sobre nuestros valores compartidos de amor, unidad y comprensión. El panorama político de nuestro país puede ser turbulento, pero es precisamente durante estos períodos de incertidumbre cuando debemos mantenernos firmes en las enseñanzas de Cristo.
Ante todo, debemos recordar la importancia de estar juntos. Nuestra fuerza como comunidad reside en nuestra capacidad de reunirnos, de apoyarnos mutuamente y de encontrar consuelo en nuestra fe. El acto de reunirnos reafirma nuestro compromiso mutuo y los valores que apreciamos. Cuando nos mantenemos unidos somos capaces de afrontar los retos del mundo y la seguridad de que no estamos solos. Es a través de esta unidad como podemos empezar a sanar las divisiones que se han sembrado en nuestra sociedad.
Escucharnos unos a otros es un aspecto fundamental de nuestra fe. En Santiago 1:19, se nos recuerda que seamos « listos para escuchar; en cambio deben ser lentos para hablar y para enojarse.». En una época en la que se alzan voces de ira y división, debemos esforzarnos por ser la presencia tranquila que escucha con empatía y busca comprender. Escuchar es un acto de amor y humildad. Requiere que dejemos a un lado nuestros propios prejuicios y juicios y escuchemos las historias y experiencias de los demás. Escuchando de verdad, podemos empezar a salvar las distancias que nos dividen y fomentar un sentimiento de comunidad integradora y compasiva.
Amar al prójimo es quizá el mandamiento más profundo que se nos ha dado. En San Mateo 22:39, Jesús nos dice «ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo». Esta simple pero poderosa directiva nos llama a extender el amor y la bondad a todos, independientemente de sus creencias políticas, antecedentes o diferencias. En tiempos de luchas políticas, es fácil caer en la trampa de ver a los demás como enemigos. Sin embargo, como seguidores de Cristo, estamos llamados a ver la humanidad en cada persona y a responder con amor y gracia. Amar al prójimo significa abogar por la justicia, oponerse a la opresión y trabajar por la reconciliación. Significa ser un faro de esperanza y luz en un mundo que lo necesita desesperadamente.
Mientras atravesamos estos tiempos difíciles, recordemos que nuestra fe no es sólo un conjunto de creencias, sino una forma de vida. Nuestras acciones, palabras y actitudes deben reflejar el amor de Cristo en todo lo que hacemos. Estamos llamados a ser pacificadores, constructores de puentes y agentes de cambio. No es una tarea fácil, pero estamos preparados para ella gracias a la fuerza y la guía del Espíritu Santo.
En términos prácticos, comprometámonos a entablar conversaciones abiertas y honestas con quienes puedan tener perspectivas diferentes. Busquemos oportunidades para servir a nuestras comunidades, especialmente a las más vulnerables. Oremos fervientemente por nuestros líderes, por nuestra nación y por los demás. Y aferrémonos a la esperanza de que, mediante nuestros esfuerzos colectivos, podemos crear una sociedad que refleje el reino de Dios, un reino de justicia, paz y amor.
Por último, en estos tiempos difíciles, se nos recuerda el poder de estar juntos, de escucharnos unos a otros y de amar a nuestro prójimo. Abracemos estos valores con renovado vigor y dedicación. Que seamos una fuente de esperanza y sanación en nuestro país, y que nuestras acciones reflejen el amor de Cristo en todo lo que hacemos.

La iglesia principal está siendo sometida a trabajos de mantenimiento durante las próximas semanas. ESTUDIO BIBLICO EN INGLES

ACOLYTES
Ascensión necesita acólitos en el servicio de 10:00 a.m. los domingos. Tradicionalmente, los acólitos eran jóvenes, desde 5º de primaria hasta bachillerato. Ahora ya no. La Ascensión está abierta a acólitos adultos. Estamos en extrema necesidad. No es difícil, y se proveerá entrenamiento. Hazle saber al Padre Javier que estás interesado; nos pondremos en contacto contigo y comenzará el proceso.
EL PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL ALBERGUE DE HOMBRES
El programa de almuerzo del Refugio de Hombres de julio es hoy, 21 de julio, a las 9:00 a.m. El programa proporciona almuerzos en bolsas para los hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se reúnen en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. El próximo programa será el 18 de agosto. Vengan al Undercroft y ayuden a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados.
