BACKPACKS FOR LINKAGES TO LEARNING

It is time once again to begin preparing for the upcoming academic year by showing our support for the Linkages to Learning program at Summit Hall Elementary School, Gaithersburg.

According to their website, their mission is “To improve the well-being of children and their families through a collaborative delivery of school-based services that address the social, economic, health, and academic success of a child." The program provides health services to children and mental health services to children and their families. Linkages to Learning also provides social services such as help obtaining food, clothing, furniture and housing; legal assistance with immigration and employment issues; and accessing recreation programs and daycare. They also provide education support including computer instruction for parents and backpacks for children.

Ascension has supported this program that provides backpacks and other services to underserved children in our parish, for at least 18 years. If you would like to participate in this year’s backpack drive, please pick up a list in the narthex or download a list from the Ascension website. This year’s lists are double sided. Just choose a side. I know that some of the items on these lists are expensive. You may want to work with a friend to get all of the items on the list. Any and all donations will be appreciated. Please bring all of your items to church by 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2024. MAINTENANCE WORK AT ASCENSION

The maintenance work continues in the main church. The office is open but if you must come during the workweek (Monday through Friday) during office hours, please call and let our office administrator Julie know. While the work is in progress, the side door will not be available to access. This is for everyone's safety. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

BIBLE STUDY IN ENGLISH

Due to the repairs in the church, we will have to reschedule the Bible study in English. We will be starting again in September, or sooner if we have access to the library.

ACOLYTES

Ascension needs acolytes at the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays. Traditionally, acolytes were young people, from 5^th grade through high school. No more! Ascension is open to adult acolytes. We are in dire need. It isn’t difficult, and training will be provided. Let Padre Javier know that you are interested; we will contact you and the process will begin.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The next Men’s Shelter lunch program will be on August 18, at 9:00 a.m. The program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. Again, the next program will be on August 18. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. FREE PILATES CLASS

Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size, or larger). We meet in the Chapel. Marcia will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. BAKE SALE

I’ve been asked to find the best bakers at Ascension!

During the yard sale, we would also like to have a bake sale. We need some great cookies, brownies, breads, cupcakes and a few folks to help sell them.

This will be on Saturday August 17 during the yard sale hours so we will need five or six good people available to sit at our bake sale table and sell the goodies.

If you can, please let me know. There is a signup sheet in the hallway. Bake sale goodies must be delivered to the Church the previous day, Friday, August 16 in the afternoon. I’ll give you the times next week.

BACK PACKS FOR LINKAGES TO LEARNING

It is that time of year again. We are collecting school supplies to support the Linkages to Learning program at Summit Hall Elementary School, Gaithersburg. The Linkages to Learning Program serves children in underserved communities. Please help these young students get their school year off to a good start by providing school supplies. Please pick up a list in the narthex or on the Ascension website. You do not have to get everything on the list, just do the best you can. All donations are appreciated. Please bring your items to church by Sunday, August 18. Thank you for your support of this project.

MOCHILAS PARA LINKAGES TO LEARNING

Una vez más, es hora de empezar a prepararse para el próximo año académico mostrando nuestro apoyo al programa Linkages to Learning de la escuela primaria Summit Hall de Gaithersburg.

Según su sitio web, su misión es «Mejorar el bienestar de los niños y sus familias a través de una prestación colaborativa de servicios basados en la escuela que abordan el éxito social, económico, de salud y académico de un niño.» El programa ofrece servicios sanitarios a los niños y servicios de salud mental a los niños y sus familias. Debido a las reparaciones en la iglesia, tendremos que reprogramar el estudio bíblico en inglés. Comenzaremos de nuevo en septiembre, o antes si tenemos acceso a la biblioteca.

ACOLYTES

Ascensión necesita acólitos en el servicio de 10:00 a.m. los domingos. Tradicionalmente, los acólitos eran jóvenes, desde^5º de primaria hasta bachillerato. Ahora ya no. La Ascensión está abierta a acólitos adultos. Estamos en extrema necesidad. No es difícil, y se proveerá entrenamiento. Hazle saber al Padre Javier que estás interesado; nos pondremos en contacto contigo y comenzará el proceso.

EL PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO DEL REFUGIO DE HOMBRES

El próximo programa de almuerzo del Refugio de Hombres será el 18 de agosto, a las 9:00 a.m. El programa provee almuerzos en bolsas para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, proveemos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. De nuevo, el próximo programa será el 18 de agosto. Venga al Undercroft y ayude a hacer los sandwiches y los almuerzos embolsados. VENTA DE PASTELES

¡Me han pedido que encuentre a los mejores panaderos en Ascensión!

Durante la venta de patio, también nos gustaría tener una venta de pasteles. Necesitamos algunas galletas, brownies, panes, magdalenas y algunas personas para ayudar a venderlos.

Esto será el sábado 17 de agosto durante las horas de venta de patio por lo que necesitaremos cinco o seis buenas personas disponibles para sentarse en nuestra mesa de venta de pasteles y vender las golosinas.

Si usted puede, por favor hágamelo saber. Hay una hoja de inscripción en el pasillo. Las golosinas de la venta de pasteles deben ser entregadas a la Iglesia el día anterior, viernes, 16 de agosto por la tarde. Os daré los horarios la semana que viene.
