Juneteenth
I have been spending time pondering Juneteenth which the nation celebrated on Wednesday, and while I have done a lot of reading to fully understand its significance, I found this information from the National Museum of African American History and Culture the best:
“On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.
But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas. Juneteenth marks our second Independence Day. Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.”
That last sentence is very powerful for me. As followers of Christ, we wish for certainty, justice and equality and we want God’s kingdom here on earth but there is work still to be done.
This week’s Old Testament reading is the story of David and Goliath and I think that in some ways the story of the young boy David standing up to the giant Goliath and winning, and the story of the enslaved in Galveston Bay, can help encourage us and give us the courage to keep going in the face of some of the challenges we face as a society today — inequality, injustice, war, political strife, violence in our cities or our own personal pain. We always need hope. And what if we saw Goliath as systems that still oppress and we as David are willing to stand up and take those giants on.
One of the Psalms appointed for this week is Psalm 9. I think some of its verses are perfect:
18: “For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever.
19: Rise up, O Lord! Do not let mortals prevail; let the nations be judged before you.”
Let us be beacons of light and hope as we continue to strive for justice and God’s kingdom.

FREE PILATES CLASS CONTINUES MONDAYS AT 6:00 p.m.
Pilates class is back in session! Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size, or larger). We meet in the Chapel. Marcia will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. Due to the repairs in the church, we will have to reschedule the bible study in English and we will be starting again in September or sooner if we have access to the library.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is July 21, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com

Attention Ascension family! The main church with be undergoing maintenance work for the next few weeks. The office will be open but if you must come during the workweek (Monday through Friday) during office hours, please call and let our office administrator Julie know. Juneteenth
He dedicado tiempo a reflexionar sobre el Juneteenth que la nación celebró el miércoles, y aunque he leído mucho para comprender plenamente su significado, esta información del Museo Nacional de Historia y Cultura Afroamericanas me ha parecido la mejor:
"En la "Víspera de la Libertad", o víspera del 1 de enero de 1863, tuvieron lugar los primeros servicios de la Noche de Vigilancia. Esa noche, afroamericanos esclavizados y libres se reunieron en iglesias y casas particulares de todo el país esperando la noticia de que la Proclamación de la Emancipación había entrado en vigor. Al filo de la medianoche, las plegarias fueron escuchadas, pues todos los esclavizados de los Estados Confederados fueron declarados legalmente libres. Los soldados de la Unión, muchos de los cuales eran negros, marcharon hacia las plantaciones y a través de las ciudades del sur leyendo pequeñas copias de la Proclamación de Emancipación difundiendo la noticia de la libertad en los Estados Confederados. Sólo mediante la Decimotercera Enmienda la emancipación puso fin a la esclavitud en todo Estados Unidos.
Pero no todo el mundo en territorio confederado sería libre inmediatamente. Aunque la Proclamación de Emancipación se hizo efectiva en 1863, no podía aplicarse en los lugares que aún estaban bajo control confederado. Como resultado, en Texas, el estado confederado más occidental, las personas esclavizadas no serían libres hasta mucho más tarde. La libertad llegó finalmente el 19 de junio de 1865, cuando unas 2.000 tropas de la Unión llegaron a la bahía de Galveston, Texas. El ejército anunció que los más de 250.000 negros esclavizados del estado eran libres por decreto ejecutivo. Este día pasó a ser conocido como "Juneteenth" por los recién liberados de Texas. Esta última frase es muy poderosa para mí. Como seguidores de Cristo, deseamos certeza, justicia e igualdad y queremos el reino de Dios aquí en la tierra, pero aún queda trabajo por hacer.
La lectura del Antiguo Testamento de esta semana es la historia de David y Goliat y creo que, en cierto modo, la historia del joven David que se enfrentó al gigante Goliat y venció, y la historia de los esclavizados de la Bahía de Galveston, pueden ayudarnos a animarnos y darnos valor para seguir adelante ante algunos de los retos a los que nos enfrentamos como sociedad hoy en día: desigualdad, injusticia, guerra, luchas políticas, violencia en nuestras ciudades o nuestro propio dolor personal. Siempre necesitamos esperanza. ¿Y si viéramos a Goliat como los sistemas que aún oprimen y nosotros, como David, estuviéramos dispuestos a levantarnos y enfrentarnos a esos gigantes?
Uno de los Salmos señalados para esta semana es el Salmo 9. Creo que algunos de sus versículos son perfectos:
18: "Porque no siempre será olvidado el necesitado, ni perecerá para siempre la esperanza del pobre.
19: ¡Levántate, Señor! No dejes que prevalezcan los mortales; que las naciones sean juzgadas ante ti".
Seamos faros de luz y esperanza mientras seguimos luchando por la justicia y el reino de Dios.

PROGRAMA DE COMIDAS DEL ALBERGUE PARA HOMBRES
El programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres proporciona almuerzos en bolsas a los hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Los generosos miembros de Ascensión donan las provisiones. Dependiendo de la temporada, proporcionamos entre 40 y 80 almuerzos al mes.
