FREE PILATES CLASS CONTINUES MONDAYS AT 6:00 p.m.

Pilates class is back in session! Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size, or larger). Please enter by the children's school doors in the back. We meet in the Parish Hall. Marcia will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. Questions? THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is June 16, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com

PISCATAWAY CONOY PEOPLE

The Piscataway People have lived for thousands of years in the Chesapeake Bay’s Western Bank. Their language belongs to the Algonquin language family, with their community’s name meaning “the People where the waters blend.” 

Before English colonists arrived in 1634 on the ships the Ark and the Dove, the Piscataway People operated as a confederacy over tributary tribes and were ruled by a paramount hereditary Tayac; at the time of colonial contact, this position was held by Chief Wannas. While living among villages and paying tribute to the Tayac village of Moyaone, the Piscataway were highly skilled in their traditional foodways, relying on local game, birds, fish, shellfish, wild plants, and maize as stable ingredients in their diet.

The Chesapeake Estuary was a central hub for indigenous trading and tribal affairs in the North and Mid-Atlantic Woodlands. After their contact with Leonard Calvert, the brother to Lord Baltimore, colonists sought an agreement with the chief’s brother, Kittamaqunnd, which resulted in the murder of Wannas and establishment of St. Mary’s City. By the 1650s, the increasing colonial population and demands for agricultural land, as well as tobacco cultivation, led Maryland to shift their relationship from being acquaintances to stealing native lands. 

In 1666, a treaty between the Colony of Maryland and 12 tribes was signed, where the Piscataway and other tribal communities were forced to comply with colonial law while being permitted to use their ancestral lands; however, land hunger was never satisfied, colonists would continue to push the Piscataway people from their homelands and establish reservations to closely observe their community in case of uprising. Some of the Piscataway people migrated deeper into Virginia, Pennsylvania, and other northern states, where the Haudenosaunee (previously known as Iroquois) had come to call them Conoy and ultimately allowed them to join other tribes into the original Five Nations. Most Piscataway People remained in Maryland and were forced to assimilate as tenant farmers, day laborers, domestic servants, or self-entrepreneurs.

Today there are two recognized tribes of the Piscataway People; the Piscataway Conoy Tribe and Piscataway Indian Nation were granted Maryland State Recognition on January 9^th, 2012. Continuing a half century movement, the Piscataway Conoy are still seeking federal recognition and acknowledgment for being land stewards to the National Government and Greater Region. The Piscataway Conoy Tribe is progressively trying to tackle the generational issues of colonialism that are related to housing, hunger, health, education, and cultural erasure, while also advocating for long-term community investments.

Through Piscataway Eyes (TPE), Inc.® is the tribally designated 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the immediate needs of the Piscataway Conoy People. Established to combat hunger, homelessness, and other inadequate resources within the community, TPE mobilizes efforts to provide essential support while being committed to preserving the rich culture and history of the Piscataway People for future generations. The vision for the tribe’s future encompasses a path of essential community infrastructure, including the reacquisition of tribal lands so that a tribal government office, a cultural center, a museum, a health clinic, housing facilities, academic and trade schools, as well as small-business enterprises, may be built to sustain the community.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MINISTER OF MUSIC

Etienne Zhou is a dynamic classical pianist with a great passion for captivating audiences through his performances across Asia, Europe, and North America. Zhou’s versatile repertoire has graced the stages of prestigious venues such as The Forbes Center of the Performing Arts, Bradshaw Hall in England, Hongkong Cultural Center, Shenzhen Concert Hall, and many others. Recently, Zhou was honored as the Third-Prize Winner at the 2024 New York International Artists Piano Competition, and the Winner of the Luciana Montanari Mendola Award from the Italian Cultural Society, further recognizing his musical artistry. He is now serving as the Minister of Music at the Episcopal Church of Ascension in Gaithersburg and is currently a doctorate candidate in piano performance at The Catholic University of America.

EL PUEBLO PISCATAWAY CONOY

El Pueblo Piscataway vive desde hace miles de años en la orilla occidental de la bahía de Chesapeake. Su lengua pertenece a la familia lingüística algonquina, y el nombre de su comunidad significa «el Pueblo donde se mezclan las aguas».  

Antes de que los colonos ingleses llegaran en 1634 en los barcos el Arca y la Paloma, el Pueblo Piscataway funcionaba como una confederación sobre tribus tributarias y estaba gobernado por un Tayac hereditario supremo; en el momento del contacto colonial, este cargo lo ocupaba el jefe Wannas. Mientras vivían entre aldeas y rendían tributo al pueblo Tayac de Moyaone, los Piscataway eran muy hábiles en su alimentación tradicional, basándose en la caza local, las aves, el pescado, el marisco, las plantas silvestres y el maíz como ingredientes estables de su dieta.

La mayoría de los piscataway permanecieron en Maryland y se vieron obligados a asimilarse como granjeros arrendatarios, jornaleros, empleados domésticos o autoempresarios. 

Hoy en día existen dos tribus reconocidas del Pueblo Piscataway; la Tribu Piscataway Conoy y la Nación India Piscataway obtuvieron el reconocimiento del Estado de Maryland el 9 de enero de 2012. Continuando con un movimiento de medio siglo, los Piscataway Conoy siguen buscando el reconocimiento federal y el reconocimiento por ser administradores de la tierra ante el Gobierno Nacional y la Gran Región. La tribu Piscataway Conoy está intentando progresivamente abordar los problemas generacionales del colonialismo relacionados con la vivienda, el hambre, la salud, la educación y el borrado cultural, al tiempo que aboga por inversiones comunitarias a largo plazo.

Demosle la Bienvenida a nuestro nuevo ministro de Musica

Etienne Zhou es un dinámico pianista clásico con una gran pasión por cautivar al al público a través de sus actuaciones por Asia, Europa y Norteamérica. El versátil repertorio de Zhou ha engalanado los escenarios de prestigiosos lugares como el Forbes Center of the Performing Arts, el Bradshaw Hall de Inglaterra, el Hongkong Cultural Center, Shenzhen Concert Hall, y muchos otros. Recientemente, Zhou fue galardonado con el Tercer Premio del Concurso Internacional de Piano para Artistas de Nueva York 2024 y con el Premio Luciana Montanari Mendola de la Sociedad Cultural Italiana, lo que supone un reconocimiento más a su arte musical. Actualmente ejerce como ministro de música en la Iglesia Episcopal de la Ascensión de Gaithersburg y es doctorando en interpretación pianística por la Universidad Católica de América.
