Our sacred grounds need to be protected and cared for if we want these grounds to be here for our children and grandchildren. We can demonstrate our appreciation for the wonderful diversity of the creatures on this planet by making sure birds and butterflies have the food they need. You can heal God’s creation right in your own yard by planting native plants. Not only do native plants support our local wildlife but they also protect our local streams! Native plants hold soil that filters out pollution before it enters streams. Do you want to learn more about the benefits of native plants? Are you thinking about making a pledge to receive a free native plant starter kit for your garden? Equity & Justice
in Maryland

DID YOU KNOW that the Maryland legislature is in session now? A lot of important legislation is being considered. Would you like to learn more?
The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network (MEPPN) have resources to help you learn about specific proposed bills and let you contact your representatives to express your opinion. Here is the link to their site: https://episcopalmaryland.org/advocacy/.
The Ascension Equity & Justice Committee has been studying and tracking proposed bills and is paying particular attention to these five (the first two are supported by the MEPPN) :
· SB [Senate Bill] 388 and HB [House Bill] 340: Prescription Drug Affordability Board—Authority for Upper Payment Limits and Funding (Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for All Marylanders Act of 2024). This bill would allow upper limits to be set on prescription drug prices for all health insurance plans in Maryland, not just the plans for state and local employees.
· SB 705 and HB 728: Health Insurance—Qualified Resident Enrollment Program (Access to Care Act). This bill would allow all Marylanders, including undocumented residents who work and pay taxes, to purchase health insurance through the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange.
· HB 864: Empower Maryland Energy Efficiency Act of 2024. This bill includes expansions to the EmPOWER program to meet the needs of low-income users.
· SB 475 and HB 583: Center for Firearm Violence Prevention—Establishment. This bill would establish the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention in the Maryland Department of Health to reduce firearm violence, harm from firearm violence, and misuse of firearms in the State.
· SB 488 and HB 947: An Act concerning Civil Actions—Public Nuisances—Firearm Industry Members (Gun Industry Accountability Act of 2024). This bill would prohibit certain firearm industry members from knowingly creating, maintaining, or contributing to harm to the public through the sale, manufacture, importation, or marketing of a firearm–related product under certain circumstances.

JOIN US FOR FREE EXERCISE CLASS
Join us at 6:00-7:00 p.m. on 2/19; 2/26; 3/4; and/or 3/11 for mat Pilates class in Parish Hall with Marcia, IM=X certified Pilates instructor. No previous experience necessary. All levels of fitness welcome. Just bring a towel, wear exercise clothes, and we will take care of the rest. Pilates is an excellent exercise form that addresses strengthening your core, improving posture, reducing back, neck, and shoulder stiffness/pain. LENT MADNESS
Again this year, Forward Movement is offering its Lent Madness activity online. This is a parody of March Madness, the collegiate basketball tournament. In Lent Madness, two saints are paired in each bracket, and participants vote for their favorite in each bracket. This continues until one of them wins the Golden Halo. Have you missed Coffee Hour as it used to be? Delicious snacks? Meeting, greeting and getting to know new people as you sip your coffee? Love to bake/cook or just buy something to share? We do too! Help us bring back “the good old days” of Coffee Hour by joining us in reorganizing and reviving the Hospitality Angels in providing snacks on a regular basis every Sunday. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams of 2-3 members to serve at least one Sunday every month, in bringing snacks and preparing coffee, if we can get enough volunteers. MIDWEEK SIMPLE SUPPER AND EUCHARISTIC SERVICE
On Thursdays during Lent, we will have a simple shared supper of soup at 6:00 p.m. followed by Holy Eucharist in the main church at 7:00 p.m.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The next program is March 17, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com
