CARING FOR CREATION — REFLECTING ON PSALM 98
This Sunday is sometimes referred to as “Creation Sunday,” and the Psalm appointed for this week Psalm 98, reminds us to praise our Creator God. It is also a reminder that God is firmly in charge of all it. The seas roar, the floods “clap their hands,” and the “hills sing together for joy.”
We have experienced a number of different seasons in the past couple of weeks. It seems as though we have gone from Winter to Spring to Summer in a very short period of time. As I have been driving from one place to another, I have been looking at people’s gardens and admiring all of the blooming plants and trees. One of my favorites is the small lilac bush in my yard. It has bloomed and I made sure to stop and take a moment to smell the purple flowers. Rochester New York where I grew up is known for its lilacs and we had three large lilac bushes in our yard with three different colors, so when I smell a lilac, it brings back a wealth of memories. I hope each of you has a favorite flower, shrub, plant or tree that makes you stop and think about how this beauty has informed or transformed your life over the years.
One of my favorite theologians is a former nun named Elizabeth Johnson who writes extensively on our Creator God and how the entire universe is so deeply connected. She writes: “Bacteria, pine trees, blueberries, horses, the great gray whales – we are all kin in the great community of life. … this makes human beings the cantors of the universe, able to sing praise and thanks in the name of the whole cosmic community of which we are a part.” She goes on to write that we only know a portion of the story, that there is endless potential in the universe that is yet to be unveiled, fueled by the Spirit.
But she also cautions that as members of this universal community, we have a deep responsibility to ensure that it is preserved and carefully tended. Johnson writes: “To sum up: ecological theology proposes that the Creator Spirit dwells at the heart of the natural world, graciously energizing its evolution from within, compassionately holding all creatures …and drawing the world forward toward an unimaginable future. Throughout the vast sweep of cosmic and biological evolution, the Spirit embraces the material root of life and its endless new potential, empowering the cosmic process from within.”
Ascension is so fortunate to have our own, award-winning Green Team, that will help guide us in the steps that we can take to carefully tend and preserve our own part of the vast universe. And on this creation Sunday, let’s pause and look around and sing to the Lord with joyous song and praises as the Psalmist calls us to do.

TAMALES SALE
Here is information about tamales - because we are approaching the date when we will be selling two different kinds of tamales. The sale will be held on Sunday May 19, two weeks from today.
Here are the choices:
--- Vegetarian Tamal or Raja; contains maseca (corn flour), vegetable oil, tomatoes, onion, cheese and poblano chili wrapped in corn husks
--- Tamal de Mole; contains maseca (corn flour), chicken, guajillo chili, onion, garlic, pepper, and cumin, wrapped in banana leaves.
Today is the last day to order! The cost of each tamale is $3.50. More information about the tamale sale will be provided. We are sure you will enjoy these delicious and appetizing tamales.
Next month, on June 9th, we will have a class on how to prepare tamales for all interested people. We hope to have a good group for this activity. All are welcome.

CUIDAR LA CREACIÓN - REFLEXIONAR SOBRE EL SALMO 98
Este domingo se denomina a veces "Domingo de la Creación", y el Salmo designado para esta semana, el Salmo 98, nos recuerda que debemos alabar a nuestro Dios Creador. Es también un recordatorio de que Dios está firmemente a cargo de todo ello. Los mares rugen, las inundaciones "baten palmas" y las "colinas cantan juntas de alegría".
Hemos experimentado varias estaciones diferentes en las últimas semanas. Parece como si hubiéramos pasado del invierno a la primavera y al verano en muy poco tiempo. Mientras conducía de un lugar a otro, he estado mirando los jardines de la gente y admirando todas las plantas y árboles en flor. Uno de mis favoritos es el pequeño arbusto de lilas de mi jardín. Ha florecido y me he asegurado de parar y tomarme un momento para oler las flores moradas. Rochester, Nueva York, donde crecí, es conocido por sus lilas y teníamos tres grandes arbustos de lilas en nuestro jardín con tres colores diferentes, así que cuando huelo una lila, me trae un montón de recuerdos. Espero que cada uno de ustedes tenga una flor, arbusto, planta o árbol favorito que le haga detenerse a pensar en cómo esta belleza ha informado o transformado su vida a lo largo de los años.
Una de mis teólogas favoritas es una antigua monja llamada Elizabeth Johnson que escribe extensamente sobre nuestro Dios Creador y sobre cómo todo el universo está tan profundamente conectado. Ella escribe: "Bacterias, pinos, arándanos, caballos, las grandes ballenas grises - todos somos parientes en la gran comunidad de la vida. ... esto convierte a los seres humanos en los cantores del universo, capaces de cantar alabanzas y agradecimientos en nombre de toda la comunidad cósmica de la que formamos parte". Continúa escribiendo que sólo conocemos una parte de la historia, que existe un potencial infinito en el universo que aún está por desvelar, alimentado por el Espíritu.
Pero también advierte que, como miembros de esta comunidad universal, tenemos la profunda responsabilidad de velar por su conservación y cuidado. Johnson escribe: "Resumiendo: la teología ecológica propone que el Espíritu Creador habita en el corazón del mundo natural, dinamizando graciosamente su evolución desde dentro, sosteniendo compasivamente a todas las criaturas... y arrastrando al mundo hacia un futuro inimaginable. A lo largo del vasto barrido de la evolución cósmica y biológica, el Espíritu abraza la raíz material de la vida y su nuevo potencial sin fin, potenciando el proceso cósmico desde dentro."
Ascensión es tan afortunada de contar con nuestro propio y galardonado Equipo Verde, que nos ayudará a guiarnos en los pasos que podemos dar para cuidar y preservar cuidadosamente nuestra propia parte del vasto universo. Y en este domingo de la creación, hagamos una pausa, miremos a nuestro alrededor y cantemos al Señor con cánticos alegres y alabanzas como nos llama a hacer el salmista.
