OUR ASCENSION COMMUNITY
Why do we volunteer and pledge? Very simply… because Ascension is our community and a place we find joy and connection, and we want to preserve this experience for all who come here today and tomorrow.
When my husband Avin completed graduate school at the University of Virginia we moved up to Rockville, Maryland for his job and eventually mine. We previously attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, VA and were in need of a new church family. I went to the Episcopal Church website, plugged in our zip code and got a list of churches to visit. Every week for about a month or so I went ‘church shopping’ within a couple miles radius from our home.
One Sunday I stepped into Ascension. I was greeted by an usher at the entrance of the red double doors with a warm smile and a worship program. As I entered, I could see that the congregation gathering inside was at ease with each other, some having friendly conversations as they settled into the pews for the service. I immediately had a sense that there was a good community here. To be honest, I was also a bit surprised by how diverse Ascension was….so many cultural backgrounds, different age ranges, young families, older folks, and single people. This was a quite different demographic than our former college town church experience. I also learned that there was a Sunday school ‘Godly Play’ program for young kids which would be perfect for our 3 year old son Aaron at the time. The very next Sunday I brough Avin and Aaron to Ascension and we’ve been here ever since.
It's now been over a decade since we first stepped into Ascension. Over the years, we have come to observe and appreciate how so many members volunteer for different activities and programs at church, from pitching in at an occasional yard sale or clean up day to regularly serving on a committee or outreach program. These aren’t only retired people (which is a bit of a stereotype). They are also people who work full time jobs, are raising kids, or are taking care of elder parents but feel it is important to be involved at Ascension in different ways to share their talents and treasure. If they can do it, so can we. We were convinced to be more involved at Ascension.
There are so many paths that bring people to Ascension and different reasons that keep people here. Some are deeply emotional and touching stories, others are casual ones. There is a thriving community here and we are so happy to share it with all of you!

SUNDAY SCHOOL
This week in Godly Play, we will study the “Ten Best Ways” to live, also known as the Ten Commandments. After Moses led the People of God out of Egypt to freedom, they could live where they wanted, be who they wanted, and do what they wanted. God provided divine guidance through Moses.
COMPLINE SERVICE
During the early days of the covid-19 pandemic, many of us felt anxious and disconnected, especially those living alone. In response, we started a daily Compline service to maintain our connection. After a year and a half, as we transitioned to what we now call “the new normal,” we reduced the service to twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. As we begin a new activities year and in response to requests for a Bible Study in English, we are now holding the Compline service only on Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m.
BIBLE STUDY - MONDAY AT 7:00 P.M.
Join us for Bible study on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the library, as we dive into Paul’s powerful Letter to the Romans. This epistle, often called Paul’s theological masterpiece, covers essential themes of faith, grace, and salvation. Through this study, we will explore Paul’s vision of God’s righteousness and his deep insights into the relationship between faith and the law. We will talk about what it means to live a life transformed by Christ, confronting our own struggles and embracing the call to follow Jesus in a way that impacts our everyday lives. Whether you’re new to our Bible study or have read Romans many times, this journey offers fresh perspectives on themes that continue to resonate today—unity, reconciliation, and the power of God’s love to break down barriers. Come as you are, with your questions and insights, and let’s discover together what Paul’s letter can teach us about living boldly in our faith.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
Our November Men’s Shelter lunch program is today, Sunday, November 17, at 9:00 a.m. The program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. FREE PILATES CLASS
Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size, or larger). We meet in the Parish Hall. Leader Marcia Noble will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY RETURNS!
Have you ever wished that you could spend more time learning about the history of Christianity, the Bible, and how those are viewed in today's world? Would you like a safe, moderated group where you can sit and talk with like-minded people about how God comes into your life and offer support to others on the same journey?
Education for Ministry (EFM) is the perfect program for people who have a lot of questions about our Christian journey. The group at Ascension has been meeting for most of the last 20 years. We would like to assemble a new group starting late this year to meet on Tuesday evenings via zoom. (Don't let the word “ministry” scare you - this isn't a program only for those who are going to be ordained.) JOIN OUR BIBLE STUDY ON ZOOM!
You are all invited to the Bible Study on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. We will be delving into Hebrews Chapter 4, verses 12 to 16. In this chapter, we will explore the "rest promised by God." We will discuss how to apply this powerful truth to our lives and discover the meaning of rest in Christ. Join us for this reflection that will help renew our faith and find peace amidst daily trials. Don't miss it!

At last year’s convention, Rev. Jessica Hitchcock of St. Luke’s, Bethesda, urged a review of how congregations support diocesan ministry. In response, we formed a committee to explore this issue. Over the summer, the Committee on Congregational Stewardship and Diocesan Support sent out a survey to understand your perspectives on diocesan ministry funding. Thank you to the 180 people who participated—your input is invaluable. For clergy and wardens who haven’t yet responded, please complete the survey by January 1, 2025, so the committee can incorporate your feedback in their January report. Broad participation is crucial, so please share the survey with your congregations. Thank you for your support.

OUR NEXT STEP TO OUR SACRED GROUNDS!
This past June Church of the Ascension began an exciting journey to put OUR/YOUR FAITH values in action on our grounds here and at home. We are grateful that you participated in Sacred Grounds by pledging and planting native plants at your home. In doing so we can care for God’s creation, Earth, nature, and wildlife. By planting native plants, we help people and wildlife including protecting nearby streams that flow into Chesapeake Bay. Will you join a discussion group to share your views about next steps? The discussion will focus on steps such as replacing a small part of your lawn with native plants to protect water quality and to support pollinators. We will be talking about ways to make it easy for all of us to help people and wildlife at home. In the spring there will be an opportunity for parishioners to receive a selection of free native plants. This discussion group will be held in person on Sunday, November 24th after the 10:00 a.m. service and will be facilitated by an expert from Sacred Grounds. Please meet us in the library at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday November 24th with Mirele B. Goldsmith. Your views will help our team of volunteers to shape this program so that it works for you and The Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Thank you! Mirele B. Nuestra Comunidad en la Ascensión
¿Por qué nos ofrecemos como voluntarios y contribuimos? Muy simple... porque la Ascensión es nuestra comunidad, un lugar donde encontramos alegría y conexión, y queremos preservar esta experiencia para todos los que llegan hoy y en el futuro.
Cuando mi esposo Avin terminó la escuela de posgrado en la Universidad de Virginia, nos mudamos a Rockville, Maryland, por su trabajo y, eventualmente, el mío. Antes asistíamos a la Iglesia Episcopal de la Trinidad en Charlottesville, VA, y necesitábamos una nueva familia de iglesia. Visité el sitio web de la Iglesia Episcopal, ingresé nuestro código postal y obtuve una lista de iglesias para visitar. Cada semana, durante aproximadamente un mes, estuve “explorando iglesias” dentro de un radio de unos pocos kilómetros desde nuestra casa.
Un domingo entré a la Ascensión. Un ujier me recibió en la entrada de las puertas rojas con una cálida sonrisa y un programa de culto. Al entrar, noté que la congregación dentro se sentía a gusto entre ellos, algunos teniendo conversaciones amistosas mientras se acomodaban en las bancas para el servicio. Inmediatamente tuve la sensación de que aquí había una buena comunidad. Para ser honesta, también me sorprendió un poco lo diversa que era la Ascensión... tantas culturas diferentes, una variedad de edades, familias jóvenes, personas mayores y personas solteras. Esta era una demografía muy distinta de nuestra experiencia previa en la iglesia de nuestro pueblo universitario. También descubrí que había un programa de escuela dominical llamado “Godly Play” para niños pequeños, que sería perfecto para nuestro hijo Aaron, de 3 años en ese entonces. Al siguiente domingo, traje a Avin y a Aaron a la Ascensión, y hemos estado aquí desde entonces.
Ya han pasado más de diez años desde que llegamos por primera vez a la Ascensión. A lo largo de los años, hemos llegado a observar y apreciar cómo muchos miembros se ofrecen como voluntarios para diferentes actividades y programas en la iglesia, desde colaborar ocasionalmente en una venta de garaje o un día de limpieza, hasta servir regularmente en un comité o en un programa de alcance comunitario. No solo participan personas jubiladas (algo que suele ser un estereotipo). También hay personas que trabajan a tiempo completo, que están criando a sus hijos o cuidando de sus padres mayores, pero que sienten que es importante involucrarse en la Ascensión de diferentes maneras para compartir sus talentos y recursos. Si ellos pueden hacerlo, nosotros también. Esto nos convenció de participar más activamente en la Ascensión.
Existen muchos caminos que traen a las personas a la Ascensión y diferentes razones que las mantienen aquí. Algunas son historias profundamente emocionales y conmovedoras; otras, historias más casuales. Hay una comunidad vibrante aquí y estamos muy felices de compartirla con todos ustedes.

ESCUELA DOMINICAL
Esta semana en Godly Play, estudiaremos las "Diez Mejores Maneras" de vivir, también conocidas como los Diez Mandamientos. Después de que Moisés liberó al Pueblo de Dios de Egipto, ellos pudieron vivir donde querían, ser quienes deseaban y hacer lo que quisieran. Dios les proporcionó orientación divina a través de Moisés.

ESTUDIO BÍBLICO - LUNES A LAS 7:00 P.M.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZOS PARA EL REFUGIO DE HOMBRES
Nuestro programa de almuerzos para el Refugio de Hombres de noviembre es hoy, domingo 17 de noviembre, a las 9:00 a.m. Este programa ofrece almuerzos empacados para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes, gracias a la generosidad de los miembros de la Ascensión que donan los suministros. ¡EL PRÓXIMO PASO HACIA NUESTROS TERRENOS SAGRADOS!
El pasado junio, la Iglesia de la Ascensión comenzó un emocionante viaje para poner en práctica los valores de NUESTRA/SU FE en nuestros terrenos y en sus hogares. Estamos agradecidos por su participación en Sacred Grounds al comprometerse a plantar plantas nativas en sus hogares. Al hacerlo, cuidamos la creación de Dios: la Tierra, la naturaleza y la vida silvestre.
Plantar plantas nativas ayuda tanto a las personas como a la fauna, además de proteger los arroyos cercanos que desembocan en la bahía de Chesapeake. ¿Te unirías a un grupo de discusión para compartir tus ideas sobre los próximos pasos? Hablaremos de acciones como reemplazar una pequeña parte de tu césped con plantas nativas para proteger la calidad del agua y apoyar a los polinizadores. También discutiremos formas de facilitar este proceso para todos en sus hogares.
En la primavera, los feligreses tendrán la oportunidad de recibir una selección de plantas nativas gratuitas. Este grupo de discusión se llevará a cabo en persona el domingo 24 de noviembre, después del servicio de las 10:00 a.m. Nos reuniremos en la biblioteca a las 11:15 a.m. con Mirele B. Goldsmith.
