What it means to be a Vestry Member
As an introvert, when I was first asked to serve as a vestry member many years ago, I was not sure if I was qualified for such a challenge. I felt that I had nothing to offer in that capacity. But after talking it over with my husband, who had served on the vestry as junior and senior warden, I prayed about it and accepted the challenge, even though I still didn’t know if I was the right fit and did not know what to expect. Looking back, and now serving for the second time on the vestry, it has taught me a lot about how the church functions as a whole, and that I do not need to have any special qualifications to make decisions that help the church grow and function as an organism.
Here is what I have learned as a vestry member, that I:
· help to serve with other leaders and the clergy in seeking God’s will for our parish through prayer, study and discussion, and communicating a vision for the parish ministries;
· act as a responsible guardian for the church’s finances to ensure that it has a long term future and is operating in a trustworthy manner;
· work with the rector to give shared leadership to the congregation’s mission and ministries.
I learned what happens behind the scenes, and saw what makes the machinery of this church work; how the various committees and ministries work and what they do to assist in the mission of the parish.
The vestry usually meets once a month, on the first Sunday of each month. Sometimes we meet in called sessions for matters that may not be able to wait until the next scheduled meeting. Each member serves a three year term. It does not require a lot of time and it is time well spent. You also get to know other members of the congregation and form a meaningful bond with them that you may not have been able to do otherwise.
When you are asked to serve as a vestry member, you should feel honored that someone thinks you have what it takes to help make decisions to make our parish function organically. You may not always have an opinion about everything, but it is a learning experience like no other. This understanding of the inner workings of the parish helps you appreciate what others have done and are still doing to make Ascension the wonderful and loving congregation it is.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
This week in Godly Play, we study The Great Family. The people living around Abraham and Sarah believed that there were many gods embedded in nature. Abraham and his family believed that God was everywhere, but was that really true? What if they were to go to an unknown place or experience, would God be there? They were not sure of this, but they put their faith in God's promises and found them to be true.
COMPLINE SERVICE
During the early days of the covid-19 pandemic, many of us felt anxious and disconnected, especially those living alone. In response, we started a daily Compline service to maintain our connection. After a year and a half, as we transitioned to what we now call “the new normal,” we reduced the service to twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. As we begin a new activities year and in response to requests for a Bible Study in English, we are now holding the Compline service only on Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m., as of September 2nd.

We resumed our Bible study last week at 7:00 p.m., exploring the Letter to Philemon. This brief yet powerful letter from Paul offers rich lessons about forgiveness, reconciliation, and the transformative power of faith. Join us as we delve into the themes of the letter, its context, and its relevance for us today. Whether you're new to the group or have been with us from the beginning, this is a great opportunity to learn and grow together.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
November’s Men’s Shelter lunch program is on Sunday, November 17, at 9:00 a.m. The program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. FREE PILATES CLASS
Please join us on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. for a fun, all levels Mat Pilates class. All are welcome; no experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat and a towel (hand or dish towel size, or larger). We meet in the Parish Hall. Leader Marcia Noble will be there at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who has questions about specific exercises in the class or needs exercises or modifications to help with back, shoulder, or knee pain or any other condition. EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY RETURNS!
Have you ever wished that you could spend more time learning about the history of Christianity, the Bible, and how those are viewed in today's world? Would you like a safe, moderated group where you can sit and talk with like-minded people about how God comes into your life and offer support to others on the same journey?
Education for Ministry (EFM) is the perfect program for people who have a lot of questions about our Christian journey. The group at Ascension has been meeting for most of the last 20 years. We would like to assemble a new group starting late this year to meet on Tuesday evenings via zoom. (Don't let the word “ministry” scare you - this isn't a program only for those who are going to be ordained.)

SURVEY ON PARISH FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR EDOW
Dear Diocesan Leaders,
At last year’s diocesan convention, the Rev. Jessica Hitchcock from St. Luke’s, Bethesda, made an impassioned request that we, as a diocese, review how congregations financially support diocesan ministry. We passed a resolution to establish a working committee to guide us in this work.
Over the summer, the Committee on Congregational Stewardship and Diocesan Support circulated a survey seeking your views on how the work of the diocese might be supported by congregations, so that we might gain greater understanding of how congregational leaders experience diocesan ministry and how it should be funded.
I’m grateful to report that the survey was completed by roughly 180 people from all regions of the diocese. Thank you. Your input is invaluable.
For those clergy and wardens who have not yet taken the survey, I ask that you complete it no later than January 1, 2025, to give the committee members an opportunity to review the additional data before making their report at January’s Diocesan Convention. Please also share the survey with congregational members. For the survey to be effective, we need as broad a diocesan response as possible, and there are a number of congregations from whom we have no responses.

Do you need someone to talk to? Do you need referrals for long-term care? Ascension’s own Angelique Cooper is offering free counseling for individuals struggling with substance abuse disorders and other emotional health issues. Counseling is open to Ascension parishioners and people in the wider community. FIND OUT MORE at information meetings held after the 8:00, 10:00, and 12:00 church services on Sunday, November 3. Ascension is collaborating with Angelique through her non-profit organization Angel Eyes Foundation Inc. Angelique works at Newport Health Care in Rockville as a substance abuse counselor. She is also licensed in Minnesota and Washington DC. She has a Master’s in Health and Human Services Administration, a Master’s in Counseling and Psychology, and a Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies. Qué Significa Ser Miembro de la Junta Parroquial
Como una persona introvertida, cuando me pidieron por primera vez servir como miembro de la junta parroquial hace muchos años, no estaba segura de si estaba calificada para un desafío de este tipo. Sentía que no tenía nada que ofrecer en esa capacidad. Sin embargo, después de hablar con mi esposo, quien había servido en la junta como guardián menor y mayor, oré sobre la decisión y acepté el desafío, aunque seguía sin saber si era la persona adecuada y no sabía qué esperar. Mirando hacia atrás, ahora que estoy sirviendo por segunda vez en la junta, me ha enseñado mucho sobre cómo funciona la iglesia en su totalidad y que no necesito tener cualificaciones especiales para tomar decisiones que ayuden a la iglesia a crecer y funcionar como un organismo vivo.
Esto es lo que he aprendido como miembro de la junta parroquial:
Ayudo a servir junto con otros líderes y el clero para buscar la voluntad de Dios para nuestra parroquia a través de la oración, el estudio y la discusión, y para comunicar una visión para los ministerios de la parroquia.
Actúo como guardián responsable de las finanzas de la iglesia, para asegurarme de que tenga un futuro a largo plazo y opere de manera confiable.
Trabajo con el rector para brindar un liderazgo compartido a la misión y los ministerios de la congregación.
Aprendí lo que sucede detrás de escena y pude ver lo que hace que el engranaje de esta iglesia funcione; cómo los diversos comités y ministerios trabajan y qué hacen para apoyar la misión de la parroquia.
La junta se reúne generalmente una vez al mes, el primer domingo de cada mes. A veces tenemos sesiones especiales para tratar asuntos que no pueden esperar hasta la próxima reunión programada. Cada miembro sirve un término de tres años. No requiere mucho tiempo, y es un tiempo bien invertido. También llegas a conocer a otros miembros de la congregación y a formar un lazo significativo con ellos que quizá de otro modo no habrías tenido.
Cuando te piden servir como miembro de la junta parroquial, deberías sentirte honrado de que alguien piense que tienes lo necesario para ayudar a tomar decisiones que hagan que nuestra parroquia funcione como un organismo vivo. Puede que no siempre tengas una opinión sobre todo, pero es una experiencia de aprendizaje única. Esta comprensión de cómo funciona la parroquia te ayuda a valorar lo que otros han hecho y continúan haciendo para que Ascensión sea la maravillosa y amorosa congregación que es.

Escuela Dominical – Godly Play: "La Gran Familia"
Esta semana en Godly Play, exploraremos La Gran Familia. Abraham y Sara vivieron en un mundo donde la gente creía en muchos dioses ligados a la naturaleza. Sin embargo, Abraham y su familia creían en un Dios que estaba presente en todas partes. Esto plantea una pregunta interesante: ¿seguiría Dios con ellos si se aventuraban en lugares desconocidos? A través de la fe en las promesas de Dios, descubrieron la respuesta.
Servicio de Completas
Durante el auge de la pandemia de COVID-19, comenzamos a realizar un servicio diario de Completas para mantener a nuestra comunidad conectada, especialmente a aquellos que se sentían aislados. Con el tiempo, esto se redujo a dos veces por semana, y ahora, en respuesta a solicitudes para un Estudio Bíblico en inglés, el servicio de Completas se llevará a cabo únicamente los miércoles a las 9:00 p.m.

Encuesta sobre el Apoyo Financiero Parroquial a la Diócesis de Washington (EDOW)
Estimados Líderes Diocesanos:
En la convención diocesana del año pasado, la Reverenda Jessica Hitchcock de St. Luke's, Bethesda, hizo un llamado apasionado para que, como diócesis, revisemos cómo las congregaciones apoyan financieramente el ministerio diocesano. Aprobamos una resolución para establecer un comité de trabajo que nos guíe en esta labor.
Durante el verano, el Comité de Mayordomía Congregacional y Apoyo Diocesano distribuyó una encuesta para conocer sus opiniones sobre cómo las congregaciones podrían apoyar el trabajo de la diócesis. Queremos comprender mejor cómo los líderes congregacionales experimentan el ministerio diocesano y cómo debería financiarse.
Me complace informar que aproximadamente 180 personas de todas las regiones de la diócesis completaron la encuesta. Muchas gracias; sus aportaciones son invaluables.
Para aquellos clérigos y encargados que aún no han completado la encuesta, les pido que lo hagan antes del 1 de enero de 2025, para que los miembros del comité puedan revisar los datos adicionales antes de presentar su informe en la Convención Diocesana de enero. También les pedimos que compartan la encuesta con los miembros de sus congregaciones. Para que la encuesta sea efectiva, necesitamos una respuesta amplia en toda la diócesis, y hay varias congregaciones de las cuales aún no hemos recibido respuestas.
