A couple of years before the Pandemic, I began to venture out from my home in the Deer Park neighborhood led by my service dog, Frodo, who tethered me around the blocks. I had been housebound for a long time because of physical and emotional trauma, grief, and a series of joint surgeries. One afternoon we crossed 355 at Summit Avenue and happened upon the 5:00 worship at Ascension, Reverend Randy leading the service. Frodo, wanting to participate fully in worship, stole the remainder of the Host, the pita bread, from the side table at his chow-down height for a Cocker-Golden Retriever mix. From then on Frodo was offered Communion, and the story of our becoming regular participants at Sunday worship—first me and Frodo, and then my husband Randall—is now history. Eight years ago, I became a retired Professor of Pastoral Counseling and feminist theology, a retired Pastoral Psychotherapist, and a retired United Methodist Minister. I had graduated from Yale Divinity School and had done chaplaincy residencies in hospital and outpatient settings. I had pastored four churches and finished a Ph.D. I had taught psychology in prisons and worked on criminal justice reform. I had taught courses in Feminist Theologies, the psychology of religion, and the church and the LGBTQ movement, and I had rewritten the 12 Steps of AA for Christian Women. I had to leave academics and other pursuits because of multiple musculoskeletal problems. I already had Frodo as my pet. He had become a therapy dog, and he then taught himself how to care for me as an Emotional Support Animal and finally as a full-fledged Service Animal. Having spent my life concentrating on helping people with all areas of their well-being, I found Ascension to be invaluable in my own quest for wholeness as a person who could fully love God and serve the people—or is it rather serve God and love the people? I joined the Book Group, WAM—a treasure of seekers driven to stay at the cutting edge of contemporary authors. Here we care deeply for one another and support each other emotionally and spiritually. WAM helped me get back on the road with Frodo at my side. After he died in June 2022, I was beyond bereft and could not bring myself to attend church without him at my feet. I was welcomed into the choir, where they held me together during bouts of grief. Randall, my two children, and my seven grandchildren gave me a reason to go forward. I had started Ascension’s Green Team with Frodo as our mascot, and we had signed the Pledge for Earth Justice and begun work that led to the rain barrel installation, the Piscataway Rain Garden and its grants, the planting of birch trees, and the handing out of native plants. When leadership became too much for me, Kay Kolle stepped in to run the show. We have plans to install a new roof and add solar to reduce energy costs and our carbon footprint. We have other clergy from different denominations in the congregation, and we continue with the whole congregation to bring self-integrity and meaning, through our shared values and core beliefs, to our love for God and all others. I revel in the deep social connections I feel with fellow parishioners.
I have watched Ascension grown fuller in our in-house ministries and outreach programs, which are not only surviving but thriving. We have grown in our love for Father Javier and his excellent leadership style of empowering us as individuals and in our multiple ministries. We have truly begun to flourish overall. An example of our resilience has been the almost overwhelming task of refurbishing the buildings and grounds, juggling the finances admirably to take care of years of preventative maintenance that had to be completed before the facilities became inoperable. Yet there is much left to be done. In our stewardship campaign, may each individual and family to do their part and give it a stretch as well—I know we plan to do so—as we vow to be steadfast in responding to present and future projects with our prayers, our service in love, our array of creative talents, and all we can call on within ourselves to give to the challenges we face. We have yet to behold all the magnificence of our faith in action as we love God together and nurture one another, our neighbors, and indeed the Good Earth. Rev. Gail Unterberger, Ph.D.
BISHOP MARIANN BUDDE VISITING ASCENSION
The day has arrived! For weeks, we have eagerly anticipated Bishop Mariann's visit to our congregation. There is palpable excitement, especially since her last visit to Ascension occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, when we couldn't celebrate as we typically do. But… have we considered why this event is so important?
A bishop's visitation to a parish is a longstanding tradition within Christian history, carrying both pastoral and administrative significance. It fosters unity within the broader church community, offers spiritual guidance, and ensures proper governance. By understanding the importance of these visits and their historical roots, we gain insight into how they contribute to the strength of our parish life. One of the key reasons for a bishop's visitation is to reaffirm the connection between the parish and the diocese. A diocese, composed of numerous parishes, is overseen by a bishop, who serves as the chief pastor. When the bishop visits, it reminds us that the parish is part of a larger network of faith communities. This sense of belonging fosters unity among individual parishes and ensures that they are aligned in vision and purpose. The bishop’s visit also provides support and encouragement to the clergy, reminding them of their integral role within the wider church structure. This collaborative relationship between diocesan leadership and the local congregation strengthens cooperation and mutual support.
Another significant aspect of a bishop's visitation is the opportunity for spiritual guidance and pastoral care. As the chief spiritual leader of the diocese, the bishop is entrusted with safeguarding the faith, preaching, and administering sacraments—especially confirmation, a sacrament that is only administered by bishops. The administration of confirmation during a visitation emphasizes the connection between individuals, the parish, and the wider church. Moreover, the bishop often meets with parish leaders to discuss challenges facing the community and offers counsel on how to further the parish's mission and outreach. The visit brings encouragement not only to the clergy but also to lay leaders, inspiring renewed dedication and commitment to serving the parish and its community. Beyond the pastoral aspects, a bishop’s visitation includes an administrative component. The bishop reviews parish records, finances, and overall management to ensure proper governance. This oversight helps to identify and prevent potential issues, ensuring that the parish operates in alignment with diocesan policies and the mission of the church. Historically, the tradition of bishops visiting parishes dates back to the early centuries of Christianity. As the church expanded, bishops were responsible for overseeing large dioceses. Regular visitations ensured doctrinal orthodoxy, provided spiritual leadership, and allowed for the management of church affairs. This practice was formalized during the Middle Ages, when it became a requirement for bishops to regularly assess the spiritual and administrative health of each parish. Today, while the administrative role remains, the focus has shifted towards spiritual care and community building. Bishop visitations continue to be a vital tradition, reinforcing unity, providing spiritual guidance, and ensuring the effective governance of the church. Let us then celebrate this important event in our parish by joining in faith and happiness with those who will be confirmed and received into the Anglican Communion. SUNDAY SCHOOL
This week in Godly Play, we examine the story of the great flood and the ark that Noah built. We move beyond the creation of the world to its re-creation and begin to see the gift of water as a symbol of cleansing, redemption and forgiveness. We also learn about God's promise, through Noah, to all of us.
COMPLINE SERVICE
During the early days of the covid-19 pandemic, many of us felt anxious and disconnected, especially those living alone. In response, we started a daily Compline service to maintain our connection. After a year and a half, as we transitioned to what we now call “the new normal,” we reduced the service to twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. As we begin a new activities year and in response to requests for a Bible Study in English, we are now holding the Compline service only on Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m., as of September 2nd.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM
November’s Men’s Shelter lunch program is on Sunday, November 17, at 9:00 a.m. The program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. FREE PILATES CLASS

WATCH PARTY: INSTALLATION OF THE NEW PRESIDING BISHOP
You're invited to a watch party for the installation of the new Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe on Saturday, November 2, at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. This is a significant and joyful occasion for our Church, and we’d love to share it with you!
Bishop Rowe's installation will be a scaled-down event to reduce the carbon footprint and increase virtual participation. He chose to forego the traditional installation service in Washington National Cathedral, the seat of the presiding bishop. He said he wanted to begin his ministry in a new way and care for God's creation. His nine-year term as Presiding Bishop will begin on November 1, 2024. He is the youngest Presiding Bishop in the church's history, having been elected bishop at age 32. He currently serves as bishop of the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania and provisional bishop of the Diocese of Western New York.

SURVEY ON PARISH FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR EDOW
Dear Diocesan Leaders,
At last year’s diocesan convention, the Rev. Jessica Hitchcock from St. Luke’s, Bethesda, made an impassioned request that we, as a diocese, review how congregations financially support diocesan ministry. We passed a resolution to establish a working committee to guide us in this work.
Over the summer, the Committee on Congregational Stewardship and Diocesan Support circulated a survey seeking your views on how the work of the diocese might be supported by congregations, so that we might gain greater understanding of how congregational leaders experience diocesan ministry and how it should be funded.
I’m grateful to report that the survey was completed by roughly 180 people from all regions of the diocese. Thank you. Your input is invaluable.
For those clergy and wardens who have not yet taken the survey, I ask that you complete it no later than January 1, 2025, to give the committee members an opportunity to review the additional data before making their report at January’s Diocesan Convention. Please also share the survey with congregational members. For the survey to be effective, we need as broad a diocesan response as possible, and there are a number of congregations from whom we have no responses.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY RETURNS!
Have you ever wished that you could spend more time learning about the history of Christianity, the Bible, and how those are viewed in today's world? Would you like a safe, moderated group where you can sit and talk with like-minded people about how God comes into your life and offer support to others on the same journey?
Education for Ministry (EFM) is the perfect program for people who have a lot of questions about our Christian journey. The group at Ascension has been meeting for most of the last 20 years. We would like to assemble a new group starting late this year to meet on Tuesday evenings via zoom. (Don't let the word “ministry” scare you - this isn't a program only for those who are going to be ordained.)

NUESTRA HISTORIA EN ASCENSIÓN
Un par de años antes de la pandemia, comencé a aventurarme fuera de mi hogar en el vecindario de Deer Park con mi perro de servicio, Frodo, quien me guiaba por las calles. Había estado confinada en casa por mucho tiempo debido a traumas físicos y emocionales, duelo y una serie de cirugías en las articulaciones. Una tarde cruzamos la 355 en Summit Avenue y nos encontramos con el servicio de las 5:00 en Ascensión, dirigido por el Reverendo Randy. Frodo, deseoso de participar plenamente en la adoración, tomó el resto de la Hostia, el pan pita, de la mesa lateral, que estaba a la altura perfecta para él, una mezcla de Cocker y Golden Retriever. A partir de entonces, Frodo siempre recibió Comunión, y la historia de cómo nos convertimos en participantes regulares de la adoración dominical —primero él y yo, y luego también mi esposo Randall— ya es historia.
Hace ocho años, me jubilé como profesora de Consejería Pastoral y Teología Feminista, como psicoterapeuta pastoral y como ministra de la Iglesia Metodista Unida. Me gradué de Yale Divinity School e hice residencias de capellanía en hospitales y centros ambulatorios. Pastoreé cuatro iglesias y terminé un doctorado. Enseñé psicología en prisiones y trabajé en la reforma de justicia penal. Impartí cursos sobre Teologías Feministas, la psicología de la religión, la iglesia y el movimiento LGBTQ, y reescribí los 12 Pasos de AA para Mujeres Cristianas. Aquí nos cuidamos profundamente unos a otros y nos apoyamos emocional y espiritualmente. WAM me ayudó a retomar el camino con Frodo a mi lado. Tras su muerte en junio de 2022, estaba desolada y no podía asistir a la iglesia sin él a mis pies. Me acogieron en el coro, donde me sostuvieron durante los momentos de duelo. Tenemos planes de instalar un nuevo techo y agregar paneles solares para reducir costos de energía y nuestra huella de carbono. Tenemos otros clérigos de distintas denominaciones en la congregación y, junto a toda la congregación, continuamos impulsando la integridad personal y el sentido de pertenencia, compartiendo nuestros valores y creencias fundamentales en nuestro amor a Dios y al prójimo. Disfruto de las profundas conexiones sociales que siento con mis compañeros feligreses.
He visto cómo Ascensión ha crecido en nuestros ministerios internos y programas de alcance, que no solo están sobreviviendo sino prosperando. Hemos crecido en nuestro amor por el Padre Javier y su excelente estilo de liderazgo, que nos empodera como individuos y en nuestros múltiples ministerios. En conjunto, realmente hemos comenzado a florecer. Un ejemplo de nuestra resiliencia ha sido la tarea, casi abrumadora, de renovar los edificios y terrenos, manejando los recursos de manera admirable para realizar el mantenimiento preventivo acumulado, necesario para que las instalaciones no se volvieran inoperables. Sin embargo, queda mucho por hacer. En nuestra campaña de mayordomía, que cada individuo y familia haga su parte y también se esfuerce un poco más —nosotros planeamos hacerlo— mientras nos comprometemos a ser firmes en responder a los proyectos presentes y futuros con nuestras oraciones, nuestro servicio en amor, nuestra variedad de talentos creativos y todo lo que podamos ofrecer ante los desafíos que enfrentamos.
Aún no hemos visto toda la magnificencia de nuestra fe en acción mientras amamos a Dios juntos y cuidamos unos de otros, de nuestros vecinos y, sin duda, de la Buena Tierra.

Visita de la Obispo Mariann Budde a Ascensión
¡El día ha llegado! Durante semanas, hemos anticipado con entusiasmo la visita de la Obispa Mariann a nuestra congregación. Hay una emoción palpable, especialmente porque su última visita a la Ascensión ocurrió durante la pandemia de COVID-19, cuando no pudimos celebrar como nos gusta hacerlo. Pero… ¿hemos considerado por qué este evento es tan importante?
La visita de un obispo a una parroquia es una tradición de larga data en la historia cristiana, que conlleva tanto un significado pastoral como administrativo. Fomenta la unidad dentro de la comunidad eclesiástica más amplia, ofrece orientación espiritual y asegura un buen gobierno. Al comprender la importancia de estas visitas y sus raíces históricas, adquirimos una visión de cómo contribuyen a la fortaleza de nuestra vida parroquial.
Una de las razones clave para la visita de un obispo es reafirmar la conexión entre la parroquia y la diócesis. Una diócesis, compuesta por numerosas parroquias, es supervisada por un obispo, quien actúa como el pastor principal. Cuando el obispo visita, nos recuerda que la parroquia es parte de una red más amplia de comunidades de fe. Este sentido de pertenencia fomenta la unidad entre las parroquias individuales y asegura que estén alineadas en visión y propósito.

ESCUELA DOMINICAL

Después de un año y medio, al pasar a lo que ahora llamamos “la nueva normalidad,” reducimos el servicio a dos veces por semana, los lunes y miércoles. Al iniciar un nuevo año de actividades y en respuesta a las solicitudes de un Estudio Bíblico en inglés, ahora estamos realizando el servicio de Completas solo los miércoles a las 9:00 p.m., a partir del 2 de septiembre.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZOS PARA EL REFUGIO DE HOMBRES
El programa de almuerzos para el Refugio de Hombres de noviembre será el domingo, 17 de noviembre, a las 9:00 a.m. Este programa ofrece almuerzos empacados para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Los generosos miembros de Ascensión donan los suministros. Dependiendo de la temporada, preparamos de 40 a 80 almuerzos cada mes. Ven al Salón Parroquial para ayudar a preparar los sándwiches y empacar los almuerzos. Y, por favor, considera donar suministros, aunque no puedas estar para ayudar a empacar. CLASE GRATUITA DE PILATES
Únete a nosotros los lunes por la tarde a las 6:00 p.m. para una clase divertida de Pilates en colchoneta para todos los niveles. Todos son bienvenidos; no es necesario tener experiencia. Trae una colchoneta de yoga y una toalla (de tamaño pequeño o grande). Nos reunimos en el Salón Parroquial. FIESTA PARA VER JUNTOS: INSTALACIÓN DEL NUEVO OBISPO PRESIDENTE
Estás invitado a una fiesta para ver juntos la instalación del nuevo Obispo Presidente de la Iglesia Episcopal, el Rvdmo. Sean Rowe, el sábado, 2 de noviembre, a las 10:00 a.m. en el Salón Parroquial. Este es un evento importante y alegre para nuestra Iglesia, ¡y nos encantaría compartirlo contigo!
La instalación del Obispo Rowe será un evento reducido para disminuir la huella de carbono y aumentar la participación virtual. Él decidió omitir el servicio tradicional de instalación en la Catedral Nacional de Washington, la sede del obispo presidente, para comenzar su ministerio de una manera nueva y cuidar de la creación de Dios. Su período de nueve años como Obispo Presidente comenzará el 1 de noviembre de 2024. Es el Obispo Presidente más joven en la historia de la iglesia, habiendo sido elegido obispo a los 32 años. Actualmente, sirve como obispo de la Diócesis del Noroeste de Pensilvania y obispo provisional de la Diócesis del Oeste de Nueva York.

Todos están invitados a unirse a nuestro Estudio Bíblico los miércoles a las 7:00 p.m. por Zoom. Estaremos profundizando en Hebreos, capítulo 4, versículos 12 al 16. En este capítulo, exploraremos el “descanso prometido por Dios,” discutiremos cómo aplicar esta poderosa verdad en nuestras vidas y descubriremos el significado de descansar en Cristo.

ENCUESTA SOBRE EL APOYO FINANCIERO PARROQUIAL PARA EDOW
Estimados Líderes Diocesanos,
En la convención diocesana del año pasado, la Reverenda Jessica Hitchcock de St. Luke’s, Bethesda, hizo un llamado a que, como diócesis, revisáramos cómo las congregaciones apoyan financieramente el ministerio diocesano. Aprobamos una resolución para establecer un comité de trabajo que nos guíe en esta labor.
Durante el verano, el Comité de Mayordomía Congregacional y Apoyo Diocesano distribuyó una encuesta para conocer sus opiniones sobre cómo las congregaciones podrían apoyar la labor de la diócesis. Buscamos así entender mejor cómo los líderes congregacionales perciben el ministerio diocesano y cómo debería financiarse.
Me complace informar que aproximadamente 180 personas de todas las regiones de la diócesis completaron la encuesta. Gracias. Su participación es invaluable.
Para aquellos clérigos y guardianes que aún no han completado la encuesta, les pido que la completen a más tardar el 1 de enero de 2025, para que los miembros del comité puedan revisar los datos adicionales antes de presentar su informe en la Convención Diocesana de enero. Por favor, compartan también la encuesta con los miembros de la congregación. Para que la encuesta sea efectiva, necesitamos una respuesta diocesana lo más amplia posible, y aún faltan respuestas de algunas congregaciones.

¿Alguna vez has deseado poder dedicar más tiempo a aprender sobre la historia del cristianismo, la Biblia y cómo se ven hoy en día? ¿Te gustaría un grupo seguro y moderado donde puedas conversar con personas afines sobre cómo Dios entra en tu vida y brindar apoyo a otros en el mismo camino?
El programa Educación para el Ministerio (EFM) es perfecto para personas con muchas preguntas sobre nuestro camino cristiano. El grupo en Ascensión ha estado reuniéndose durante casi 20 años, y nos gustaría formar un nuevo grupo a finales de este año para reunirnos los martes por la tarde a través de Zoom. (No dejes que la palabra "ministerio" te intimide; este no es un programa solo para quienes se van a ordenar.)

Angelique Cooper, de la Iglesia de la Ascensión, está ofreciendo asesoramiento gratuito para personas que luchan con trastornos de abuso de sustancias y otros problemas de salud emocional. Este servicio está disponible para los feligreses de Ascensión y para la comunidad en general.
DESCUBRA MÁS en las reuniones informativas que tendrán lugar después de los servicios religiosos de las 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. y 12:00 p.m. el domingo 3 de noviembre.
