The Power of Giving

As Ascension begins our 2025 Giving Campaign, there are many and varied ways to give. I offer my own time and talent story below.

When I was in my mid-thirties, I had daily afternoon coffee with a co-worker who was in his mid-twenties. Sometimes we talked about work and sometimes we talked about family and life in general. One day he mentioned that he always carries a piece of his baby blanket. Pulling out his wallet, he retrieved a small square patch about 1.5 inches in length. Sure enough he had a piece of his blanket, much like Linus’ security blanket from the Charlie Brown cartoon series. Periodically, I thought about his little blanket patch and smiled from the memories.

Not everyone thinks of fabric in the same manner. One of my sister’s friends has a poster in her sewing room that reads, “Whoever dies with the most fabric wins!” Anyone who sews knows what this means. Some fabric you just can’t live without because you know that someday this wonderful fabric will make the perfect piece. And that’s how my fabric stash grew over the years. I clearly feel that I was a contender for that first prize. Once I retired, it seemed like the opportune moment to whittle my fabric stash so I took up quilting.

A PBS quilting show introduced me to Enchanted Makeovers, a Michigan nonprofit offering dignity and hope to women and children rebuilding their lives in long-term shelters. They accept the following handmade items: pillowcases, capes, dolls and quilts. The Enchanted Makeovers’ website tells a story of a girl who hung her new beautiful pillowcase on the wall to admire it instead of using it. I have now made fifteen pillowcases and six quilts (seven if you count one matching doll quilt) and sent those to the Michigan nonprofit.

Ascension partners with Comfort Cases each year to provide filled back packs to children in the foster care system. The purpose is to give dignity and hope to these children who sometimes have had to carry their possessions in a black garbage bag. Comfort Cases also accepts handmade quilts and hand crocheted or knitted baby blankets, but the quilts cannot be larger than 40” by 30”. I initially considered the size dimensions a creative limitation, but it has challenged my creativity in ways I did not expect. As an example, I have used leftover fabric remnants from my daughter’s friend who worked in a pediatric clinic and who made her own work shirts. Those fabric scraps became the focal point for two quilts bringing new purpose to those pieces. That purpose was magnified as a security blanket offering comfort to its foster child owner.



Ascension’s footprint in our community is vast and varied. What time and talents can you offer to Ascension or those we partner with to help individuals in our community or beyond? Consider the ripple effects of your efforts and the cherished memories for you and those you help. My hope is that my own small fabric scraps, repurposed and given new life in a quilt will have a lasting impact on a child much as the impact my friend’s blanket patch had for him. I want my quilts to be loved, used and worn out while being a constant friend to its owner.

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

This week, we will learn how the church tells time with a special calendar called the Circle of the Church Year. We notice that the great celebrations of Christmas and Easter are white, the time when we prepare for them is purple, Pentecost is red (hot) and the other times are green.  Each year, as Christians, we move through a circle of memory and anticipation as we open ourselves to God's presence.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support.

To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mixup or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!! 

INTERESTED IN CONFIRMATION OR RECEPTION?

Are you interested in either being confirmed into the Episcopal Church or if you have already been confirmed in another faith being received into the Episcopal Church? Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop. If you are interested please let Padre Javier or Rev. Tracey know. Classes will begin at Ascension on Sunday Church.

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN SEASON

Hello! I am Marge Kling. THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE!

WHEN: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25^TH AT 11:00 A.M.

Please join the Equity and Justice Committee for a tour to The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. We will take the Metro to the Smithsonian and walk to the museum to meet. Lunch can be obtained from the “Sweet Home Café” from 11:00 A.M. – 2:30 P.M. Parish Work Day. OCTOBER 11   8 A.M. – 3 P.M.

There are 3 areas we need to cover - Ascension House, first floor and undercroft, and the order of urgency is:

1. Ascension House. We have two areas that were used as storage and need to be cleaned out. 99% of the items need to be taken to Shady Grove Transfer Station. THIS IS AN EXTRA URGENT AS IT HAS BEEN POINTED OUT AS A FIRE HAZARD.

·        We need a few 3-4 trucks to accomplish this task and at least 5 folks willing to get dirty to haul stuff from the attic and 2^nd floor to the vehicles. We could probably do a chain of folks to take stuff out. It’s a small area with a lot of stuff. Masks are recommended, lots of dust and dirt.

1. The Altar Guild will do the Sanctuary and the Sacristy
2. The Main Church needs a thorough cleaning -

• Cleaning under pews
• The pews
• The books need to be dusted
• The area where the books are stored needs to be dusted and washed
• The floor needs to be washed
• The area at the back of the church needs to be cleaned

The following areas will be visible to our visitors on October 23rd and really need to be addressed now:

1. The narthex needs to be cleaned, and floor needs to be cleaned around the walls
2. The stairs going to the undercroft need to have a good cleaning around the edges along with the landing.
3. The vestibule on the lower level needs a good cleaning. Especially behind the doors and along the walls.
4. The undercroft needs to be swept and any crud on the walls needs to be cleaned plus we need to give an extra look at the small restroom in the undercroft. This will need a scrub brush.
5. The windows in the undercroft need to be washed including the ones in the atrium doors going toward the back parking lot.

THIS ITEM CAN BE ON HOLD IF NECESSARY

1. The storage area in the undercroft needs to have everything pulled out and examined. Items that are no longer needed have to be pitched.

• Some might go to GoodWill
• The floor will need to be cleaned with some type of cleaner/bleach

The goal is to complete items 1-8 on October 12; we’ll do item 9 if we have time and energy. We will need to complete 9 ASAP also. This area may require a couple of trucks for hauling to Shady Grove Transfer Station.

IF YOU OR YOUR GROUP HAVE ITEMS STORED IN THE STORAGE AREA IN THE UNDERCROFT PLEASE MARK YOUR ITEMS AND THE ORGANIZATION SO THEY ARE NOT DISPOSED OF.

Please bring cleaning rags and buckets and maybe dust mops and brooms. I’ll have cleaning products and gloves for everyone to use

El Poder de Dar

Al iniciar Ascension nuestra Campaña de Ofrendas 2025, existen muchas y variadas maneras de dar. A continuación comparto mi propia historia sobre tiempo y talento.

Cuando tenía alrededor de 35 años, tomaba café todas las tardes con un compañero de trabajo que rondaba los 25. A veces hablábamos de trabajo y a veces de la familia y de la vida en general. Un día me comentó que siempre llevaba consigo un pedacito de su cobija de bebé. Sacó su cartera y de ella un pequeño cuadrito de tela de unos 4 cm. Efectivamente, tenía un pedacito de su cobija, algo así como la manta de seguridad de Linus en las caricaturas de Charlie Brown. Con el tiempo, recordaba ese pedacito de tela y sonreía con ternura al evocarlo.

No todos piensan en la tela de la misma manera. Una amiga de mi hermana tiene un póster en su cuarto de costura que dice: “¡Quien muera con más telas gana!” Cualquiera que cosa sabe bien lo que significa. Hay telas de las que simplemente no te puedes desprender porque sabes que algún día serán perfectas para una pieza especial. Así fue como mi reserva de telas creció con los años. Honestamente, me sentía candidata al primer premio. Al jubilarme, me pareció el momento oportuno de reducir mi reserva de telas, así que empecé a hacer colchas.

Un programa de colchas en PBS me presentó a Enchanted Makeovers, una organización sin fines de lucro en Michigan que ofrece dignidad y esperanza a mujeres y niños que reconstruyen sus vidas en albergues de largo plazo. Ellos reciben artículos hechos a mano como fundas de almohada, capas, muñecas y colchas. En el sitio web de Enchanted Makeovers cuentan la historia de una niña que colgó en la pared su nueva y hermosa funda de almohada para admirarla en lugar de usarla. Hasta ahora he confeccionado quince fundas de almohada y seis colchas (siete si contamos una colcha para muñeca a juego) que envié a esa organización en Michigan.

Ascension colabora cada año con Comfort Cases para proveer mochilas llenas de artículos a niños en el sistema de acogida temporal (foster care). El propósito es dar dignidad y esperanza a estos niños que en ocasiones han tenido que cargar sus pertenencias en una bolsa negra de basura. Comfort Cases también recibe colchas hechas a mano y cobijas de bebé tejidas o de ganchillo, pero las colchas no pueden ser más grandes de 100 x 75 cm. Al principio pensé que esas medidas eran una limitación creativa, pero en realidad han retado mi creatividad de maneras que no esperaba. Por ejemplo, usé retazos sobrantes de tela de la amiga de mi hija, quien trabajaba en una clínica pediátrica y confeccionaba sus propias blusas de trabajo. Esos retazos se convirtieron en el centro de dos colchas, dándoles un nuevo propósito. Ese propósito se multiplicó al transformarse en una manta de seguridad que ofrece consuelo al niño que la recibe en acogida.

La huella de Ascension en nuestra comunidad es amplia y variada. ¿Qué tiempo y talentos puedes ofrecer a Ascension o a quienes colaboran con nosotros para ayudar a personas en nuestra comunidad o más allá? Considera los efectos multiplicadores de tu esfuerzo y los recuerdos valiosos tanto para ti como para quienes ayudes. Mi esperanza es que mis pequeños retazos de tela, transformados y dados nueva vida en una colcha, tengan un impacto duradero en un niño, de la misma forma que el pedacito de cobija de mi amigo lo tuvo para él. Quiero que mis colchas sean queridas, usadas y desgastadas, mientras se convierten en un amigo constante para su dueño.

LECCIÓN DE LA ESCUELA DOMINICAL

Esta semana aprenderemos cómo la Iglesia marca el tiempo con un calendario especial llamado el Círculo del Año Eclesiástico.

Notaremos que las grandes celebraciones de Navidad y Pascua son de color blanco; el tiempo de preparación para ellas es morado; Pentecostés es rojo (por el fuego del Espíritu Santo); y los demás tiempos son verdes.

Cada año, como cristianos, recorremos un círculo de memoria y esperanza, abriéndonos a la presencia de Dios.

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes enfrentan diferentes situaciones de vida, incluyendo enfermedades. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una manera poderosa de cuidar de ellos.

El equipo de Ascension trabaja con dedicación para mantener la lista de oración actualizada y para que el clero pueda dar seguimiento a cada persona en la lista, sabiendo si necesita atención o apoyo pastoral.

Para lograrlo, estamos revisando nuestra lista actual y trasladando algunos nombres a la lista de oración extendida. También estamos tratando de relacionar el nombre de cada persona en la lista con quien solicitó incluirlo.

Te pedimos paciencia mientras realizamos este proceso. Esperamos hacerlo correctamente, aunque podría haber alguna confusión ocasional.

¡Gracias por ayudarnos a mantener viva esta parte tan importante de la vida de oración de nuestra iglesia!

La Confirmación en nuestra iglesia es un rito pastoral sacramental que consiste en la reafirmación de los votos bautismales, con una bendición y la imposición de manos por parte del obispo.

VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

Ascension se está asociando con St. Peter’s, Poolesville, para organizar un viaje de trabajo y servicio juvenil a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos apoyado económicamente durante los últimos años.

Los organizadores esperan contar con al menos 14 participantes; si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, también habrá espacio para adultos interesados.

ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN SEASON

Hello! I am Marge Kling. I am thrilled to lead this year’s Giving Campaign with the help of the Finance Committee.  I’m a long time Episcopalian and I attend the Spanish Service. After attending online Zoom church for several years, it was time to come home to a physical space. Ascension appealed to me because of its in-reach to members and outreach to the community. This giving season, I invite each of you to consider why you give of your time, talents and treasures to Ascension. Please be on the lookout for a pledge form mailed to your home. If you don’t receive one this week, you may request a pledge envelope by calling our office administrator Julie Lively (301-948-0122) or by filling out a blank form available at the back of the church. ¡MUSEO NACIONAL DE HISTORIA Y CULTURA AFROAMERICANA!

CUÁNDO: SÁBADO 25 DE OCTUBRE A LAS 11:00 A.M.

Acompaña al Comité de Equidad y Justicia en una visita guiada al Museo Nacional de Historia y Cultura Afroamericana en Washington, D.C.

Viajaremos en Metro hasta la estación Smithsonian y caminaremos juntos hasta el museo para reunirnos allí.

El almuerzo se puede adquirir en el “Sweet Home Café” de 11:00 a.m. a 2:30 p.m.

Contamos con boletos de entrada con horario reservado para esta visita.

Día de Trabajo Parroquial – 11 DE OCTUBRE, DE 8:00 A.M. A 3:00 P.M.

Hay tres áreas principales que necesitamos cubrir: la Casa Ascensión, el primer piso y el Salón Parroquial (Undercroft). El orden de prioridad es el siguiente:

1. Casa Ascensión

Hay dos áreas que se usaban como bodegas y necesitan ser limpiadas completamente.

El 99% de los artículos deben ser llevados al Centro de Transferencia de Shady Grove.

ESTO ES SUMAMENTE URGENTE, ya que ha sido señalado como un riesgo de incendio.

Necesitamos 3 o 4 camionetas y al menos 5 personas dispuestas a ensuciarse las manos para sacar las cosas del ático y del segundo piso hasta los vehículos.

Podríamos organizarnos en cadena para agilizar el trabajo.

Es un área pequeña, pero con muchas cosas acumuladas.

Se recomienda usar mascarillas, ya que hay mucho polvo y suciedad.

2. El Altar y la Sacristía

El Grupo del Altar se encargará de limpiar el Santuario y la Sacristía.

3. La Iglesia Principal

Necesita una limpieza profunda general:

Debajo de las bancas

Las bancas mismas

Sacudir los libros y limpiar el área donde se guardan

Lavar el piso

Limpiar la parte trasera de la iglesia

Áreas que serán visibles para nuestros visitantes el 23 de octubre (¡necesitan atención urgente!):

Limpiar el nártex (entrada principal) y el piso alrededor de las paredes.

Limpiar bien las escaleras hacia el Salón Parroquial, especialmente los bordes y el descanso intermedio.

El vestíbulo del nivel inferior necesita una buena limpieza, especialmente detrás de las puertas y a lo largo de las paredes.

El Salón Parroquial debe ser barrido y se deben limpiar las paredes; además, revisar el baño pequeño, que necesita cepillo y desinfectante.

Lavar las ventanas del Salón Parroquial, incluyendo las del atrio que dan al estacionamiento trasero.

Este punto puede esperar si es necesario:

El área de almacenamiento del Salón Parroquial necesita una revisión completa.

Sacar todo y decidir qué ya no se necesita.

Algunos artículos podrían donarse a Goodwill.

El piso necesita limpiarse con algún desinfectante o cloro.

La meta es completar los puntos 1 al 8 el día 12 de octubre.

Si tenemos tiempo y energía, trabajaremos también en el punto 9.

Este último requerirá probablemente un par de camionetas para llevar cosas al centro de transferencia.

IMPORTANTE:

Si tú o tu grupo tienen cosas guardadas en el área de almacenamiento del Salón Parroquial, etiquétenlas con su nombre y el nombre de la organización, para que no sean desechadas por error.

Por favor trae: trapos, cubetas, mopas o escobas.

Habrá productos de limpieza y guantes disponibles para todos.
