Did You Know that 2025 is the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, which established the Nicene Creed as the symbol and measure of the Church’s faith?

To commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the Rt. Rev. Matthew Gunter, bishop of Wisconsin, has written a series of reflections on the Nicene Creed and its relevance for contemporary Episcopalians.

This was published this week by the Office of Communication of the National Episcopal Church.

“In our canons, the formal definition of “doctrine” is “the church’s teaching as set forth in the Creeds and in An Outline of the Faith, commonly called the Catechism.”

“Doctrine shall mean the basic and essential teachings of the Church and is to be found in the Canon of Holy Scripture as understood in the Apostles and Nicene Creeds and in the sacramental rites, the Ordinal and Catechism of the Book of Common Prayer.”

— The Episcopal Church Canon IV.2

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus had left his followers struggling to understand and articulate what had happened and its meaning. Paul and the other authors of what became the New Testament pointed the way. Those writings contained creed-like statements, e.g., 1 Corinthians 15:1-8. But even that needed interpretation. How could they make sense of the things Jesus had done and the things Jesus had said about humanity, God – and himself?

The Gospels and the other writings accepted as scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit, include language that identifies Jesus with the God of Israel, including things He said Himself. His followers were convinced that his death and resurrection had reconfigured everything, bringing salvation from sin, death, and decay with the promise of a hitherto unimagined transformation of human persons and the world. Finding language to express that in ways that enabled people to experience that salvation and transformation was important. Was Jesus some sort of divine being sent by God at the mysterious heart of all reality? Was he something more?

They had the scriptures, they had the church’s language of prayer and worship, and they had the baptismal formulae that were already the seeds of a creed and which believers were expected to affirm. With all of that, theologians of the church struggled for decades – centuries – to make sense of and find a satisfactory way to articulate who he was and why he mattered. Some ways of articulating that were deemed unsatisfactory, misguided, or even dangerous. This struggle and the debates it provoked became more public and more intense once Christianity was declared legal by the Edict of Milan in 313.

Things came to a head with a priest in the city of Alexandria named Arius, who taught that, while Jesus was in some sense divine, he was still a divine creature of God. The God behind it all could not be apprehended and would surely not deign to be identified with the messy, chaotic material world by taking on mortal flesh. But his bishop, Alexander, preached otherwise – that Jesus was indeed the incarnation of that very God. Arius condemned his bishop’s teaching. In response, the bishop disciplined and exiled Arius. But this set up an intense controversy. The Council of Nicaea was called by the Roman Emperor Constantine to address disputes about how to understand the person of Jesus and, thus, God, creation, humanity, and salvation.”

And what emerged was an affirmation of faith that we use today and can hold on to even when we struggle as we have this week to make sense of what is happening around us. Fondly, Tracey

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The program takes place every month; our next one is September 21, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com

SUNDAY RIDES TO CHURCH

If you are willing to provide transportation to and from church for seniors or others who are not able to drive themselves but would still like to attend in person please let Rev. Javier, Rev. Tracey or Deacon Rosa know. We have a few Ascension family members who would like to attend but cannot do so because they do not have reliable transportation.

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) or Angelique Cooper, our Youth Group Leader.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support.

To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mixup or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!!

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS, SUNDAY OCTOBER 5

In observance of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, we will be blessing your feline, avian, canine, bovine, equine, porcine, reptilian, and arachnid friends at a 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 5. Please invite your friends to bring their pets too!

September 21 will be the first day of Sunday School.

We will be baking Communion Bread during both the 10:00 and 12:00 services.

·       This location is just down the street by the railroad tracks next to City Hall. There is Sunday parking in that lot also the lot close to the tracks by the Shell station or drop off your items at this location and park across the street at the Parking Garage.

·       We have the Shelter reserved from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM, however there is another event at 3 so we need to have everything cleaned and our trash in the dumpster located on the premises. There is sidewalk access up to the Shelter.

·       We will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers with buns and fixens. Also water, lemonade, iced tea, and paper products.  Depending on the number of folks that sign up we may bring a pop-up tent.

·       Please sign up and bring a side dish to share.  If everyone signs up, we may not have 12 side dishes that are the same.

·       We are assigned 12 picnic tables therefore we need to know how many folks plan to attend. 

·       You may consider bringing lawn chairs or folding chairs from home, please have your name on them.

·       The restrooms are attached to the shelter.

·       We are going to have some fun games for the children and maybe some games for the adults, unless you just want to chill and relax.

¿Sabías que el año 2025 marca el 1700 aniversario del Concilio de Nicea, el cual estableció el Credo Niceno como símbolo y medida de la fe de la Iglesia?

Para conmemorar este aniversario, el Rtmo. Obispo Matthew Gunter, obispo de Wisconsin, ha escrito una serie de reflexiones sobre el Credo Niceno y su relevancia para los episcopales de hoy.

La vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús dejaron a sus seguidores luchando por entender y expresar lo que había sucedido y su significado. Pablo y los demás autores de lo que llegó a ser el Nuevo Testamento señalaron el camino. Esos escritos contenían afirmaciones de tipo confesional, por ejemplo, 1 Corintios 15:1-8. Pero incluso eso necesitaba interpretación. ¿Cómo podían dar sentido a las cosas que Jesús había hecho y a lo que había dicho sobre la humanidad, Dios… y sobre sí mismo?

Los Evangelios y los demás escritos aceptados como Escritura, inspirados por el Espíritu Santo, incluyen un lenguaje que identifica a Jesús con el Dios de Israel, incluso en cosas que Él mismo dijo. Sus seguidores estaban convencidos de que su muerte y resurrección habían reconfigurado todo, trayendo salvación del pecado, la muerte y la corrupción, con la promesa de una transformación nunca antes imaginada para las personas y para el mundo. Encontrar un lenguaje que expresara eso de una manera que permitiera a la gente experimentar esa salvación y transformación era importante. ¿Era Jesús una especie de ser divino enviado por Dios desde el misterio en el corazón de toda la realidad? ¿O era algo más?

Tenían las Escrituras, el lenguaje de oración y adoración de la Iglesia, y las fórmulas bautismales que ya contenían las semillas de un credo que los creyentes debían afirmar. Con todo eso, los teólogos de la Iglesia lucharon durante décadas —siglos— para dar sentido y encontrar una forma adecuada de articular quién era Él y por qué importaba. Algunas de esas formas de explicarlo fueron consideradas insatisfactorias, erróneas o incluso peligrosas. Esta lucha y los debates que provocó se hicieron más públicos e intensos una vez que el cristianismo fue declarado legal mediante el Edicto de Milán en el año 313.

El conflicto llegó a un punto crítico con un sacerdote de la ciudad de Alejandría llamado Arrio, quien enseñaba que, aunque Jesús era en cierto sentido divino, seguía siendo una criatura divina de Dios. El Dios que estaba detrás de todo no podía ser comprendido y seguramente no se rebajaría a identificarse con el mundo material, caótico y desordenado, tomando carne mortal. Pero su obispo, Alejandro, predicaba lo contrario: que Jesús era, en verdad, la encarnación de ese mismo Dios. Arrio condenó la enseñanza de su obispo y, en respuesta, el obispo lo disciplinó y lo exilió. Esto desencadenó una intensa controversia.

El Concilio de Nicea fue convocado por el emperador romano Constantino para abordar las disputas sobre cómo entender a la persona de Jesús y, por tanto, a Dios, la creación, la humanidad y la salvación.

Y lo que surgió fue una afirmación de fe que usamos todavía hoy y a la cual podemos aferrarnos, aun cuando luchamos, como lo hemos hecho esta semana, por encontrar sentido a lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor.

Se espera un grupo de al menos 14 personas. Si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, también habrá espacio para adultos interesados.

ESCUELA DOMINICAL – 21 DE SEPTIEMBRE

El 21 de septiembre será el primer día de la Escuela Dominical.

Ese mismo día, durante las misas de las 10:00 y 12:00, los niños estarán horneando pan de comunión.

Un área de juegos, zonas de picnic y cancha de tenis, además de un espacio separado para niños pequeños.

DETALLES IMPORTANTES

• Baños públicos · Mesas de picnic.
• Esta ubicación está a la vuelta de la calle, junto a las vías del tren al lado del City Hall. Hay estacionamiento dominical en ese lote y también en el estacionamiento junto a las vías, cerca de la gasolinera Shell. Otra opción es dejar tus cosas en el lugar y luego estacionarte en el estacionamiento público de enfrente.
• Tenemos reservado el shelter de 9:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m., pero hay otro evento después, por lo que necesitamos limpiar y llevar la basura al contenedor ubicado en el lugar. Hay acceso por banqueta hasta el shelter.
• Proveeremos hot dogs y hamburguesas con pan y complementos, además de agua, limonada, té helado y desechables. Dependiendo del número de personas que se registren, quizá llevemos una carpa portátil.
• Favor de registrarse y traer un platillo para compartir. Si todos se inscriben, evitaremos tener 12 guarniciones iguales.
• Se nos asignaron 12 mesas de picnic, por lo que necesitamos saber cuántas personas planean asistir.
• Considera traer sillas plegables o de jardín de tu casa, con tu nombre marcado.
• Los baños están junto al shelter.
• Tendremos juegos divertidos para los niños y tal vez algunos para los adultos, a menos que prefieras simplemente relajarte.
