This past Labor Day weekend was truly one to remember, and I want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who made our celebrations possible. It was a weekend full of joy, community, and the kind of love that Jesus calls us to share with one another.

We began on Sunday with our Ice Cream Social, and let me tell you it was a sweet success! None of it would have been possible without the hard work of many of you who help by planning and organizing it. The setup, the decorations, the friendly smiles, and the warm hospitality all came together to create an atmosphere of joy and welcome. I would like to give a big Thank you to Kathy Froelich who generously donated all the food and ice cream. Your gift not only filled our stomachs but filled our hearts with gratitude. That kind of generosity is a living example of how love multiplies when it is shared.

Then, on Monday very early in the morning, came the Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade. What a magnificent event! Thank you to everyone who helped organize our participation especially Leslie Callaway, as well as to those who worked behind the scenes to prepare the giveaways, to those who walked in the parade, and to those who came out to cheer us on, it was very nice to hear your voices saying our names. Each role, whether big or small, was important and made a difference. I also have to say, between the marching, waving, and walking the route, I think we all earned our “10,000 steps” for the day. Who needs the gym when you have a parade?

But jokes aside, the parade was more than just fun exercise; it was a powerful opportunity to make our church visible in the neighborhood. People saw our faces, our joy, and our commitment to being part of the wider community. They saw us as a congregation that doesn’t just worship inside the walls of our church but steps out to be present with others where they are. That kind of visibility matters. It builds trust, sparks curiosity, and invites conversation.

Still, I believe the most important part of these events is not visibility alone, but the love that drives us to be visible in the first place. Jesus commands us to love our neighbors, and every scoop of ice cream served, every smile shared along the parade route, every friendly “hello” was a way of living into that commandment. When people encounter us, my hope is that they don’t just see a church but feel God’s love radiating through us.

To all who participated in any way, whether by organizing, donating, marching, or cheering, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You made this Labor Day weekend a true celebration of community and faith. And to those who might be thinking about joining us next year, I say this: you are always welcome. These events are not just for a few, but for all who want to share in the joy of giving, serving, and loving as Jesus teaches us.

PILATES CLASS – MONDAYS 6:00 P.M.

PARISH PICNIC

We are looking for a travel grill (tailgate grill) to use for the Parish Picnic. If you have one we can borrow, please contact Toni at 301-926-2524.

October 11, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

There is a signup sheet in the Narthex.

If you know of areas that need attention, please add them to the list. If there are special areas where you’d like to help, please note them on the signup sheet as well.

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The program takes place every month; our next one is September 21, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com

SUNDAY RIDES TO CHURCH

If you are willing to provide transportation to and from church for seniors or others who are not able to drive themselves but would still like to attend in person please let Rev. Javier, Rev. Tracey or Deacon Rosa know. We have a few Ascension family members who would like to attend but cannot do so because they do not have reliable transportation.

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) or Angelique Cooper, our Youth Group Leader.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support. To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added.  

Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mixup or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!!

HIGHLIGHTS: Public restroom · Picnic tables

·       This location is just down the street by the railroad tracks next to City Hall. There is Sunday parking in that lot also the lot close to the tracks by the Shell station or drop off your items at this location and park across the street at the Parking Garage.

·       We have the Shelter reserved from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM, however there is another event at 3 so we need to have everything cleaned and our trash in the dumpster located on the premises. There is sidewalk access up to the Shelter.

·       We will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers with buns and fixens. Also water, lemonade, iced tea, and paper products.  Depending on the number of folks that sign up we may bring a pop-up tent.

·       Please sign up and bring a side dish to share.  If everyone signs up, we may not have 12 side dishes that are the same.

·       We are assigned 12 picnic tables therefore we need to know how many folks plan to attend. 

·       You may consider bringing lawn chairs or folding chairs from home, please have your name on them.

·       The restrooms are attached to the shelter.

·       We are going to have some fun games for the children and maybe some games for the adults, unless you just want to chill and relax.

Join members of Ascension’s Equity & Justice Committee for a Social Justice Day sponsored by the Diocese of Maryland and the Maryland Episcopal Public Policy Network. We’ll gather at St. Anne's in Annapolis on Saturday 9/27.

We will consider these questions: What can we do to help bring about the loving culture of God where we live and strive for a more just society? Where might we add our voice and our action so that we might live into the call to be repairers of the breach? 

We will pray and reflect. We will be inspired by the bishop. We will hear from elected officials. And we will be challenged by allies, advocates, and activists to engage fully in the work of advocacy and positive change.

We will begin at 8:30 AM with registration and check-in. Morning Prayer will begin in the church at 9:30 AM. After the plenary session, we will move to the parish hall for a series of workshops to learn about a variety of legislative initiatives and what we can do to assist in their passage.

A box lunch will be served. We will end the day with a debriefing and have you back on the road at 2:30 PM.

Unidos en la Alegría y el Servicio

Este pasado fin de semana del Día del Trabajo fue verdaderamente inolvidable, y quiero tomar un momento para dar gracias a todos los que hicieron posibles nuestras celebraciones. Fue un fin de semana lleno de alegría, comunidad y del tipo de amor que Jesús nos llama a compartir unos con otros.

Comenzamos el domingo con nuestra Convivencia de Helado, ¡y déjenme decirles que fue un dulce éxito! Nada de esto hubiera sido posible sin el arduo trabajo de muchos de ustedes que ayudaron a planear y organizar. La preparación, las decoraciones, las sonrisas amistosas y la cálida hospitalidad se unieron para crear un ambiente de alegría y bienvenida. Me gustaría agradecer grandemente a Kathy Froelich, quien generosamente donó toda la comida y el helado. Su regalo no solo llenó nuestros estómagos, sino que también llenó nuestros corazones de gratitud. Ese tipo de generosidad es un ejemplo vivo de cómo el amor se multiplica cuando se comparte.

Después, el lunes muy temprano por la mañana, llegó el Desfile del Día del Trabajo en Gaithersburg. ¡Qué evento tan magnífico! Gracias a todos los que ayudaron a organizar nuestra participación, especialmente a Leslie Callaway, así como a quienes trabajaron detrás de escena preparando las cosas que dimos a la gente, a quienes caminaron en el desfile, y a quienes salieron a echarnos porras, fue muy bonito escuchar sus voces llamando nuestros nombres. Cada papel, grande o pequeño, fue importante e hizo la diferencia. También tengo que decir que, entre caminar, saludar y recorrer la ruta, creo que todos cumplimos nuestros “10,000 pasos” del día. ¿Quién necesita gimnasio cuando tenemos un desfile?

Pero, dejando las bromas a un lado, el desfile fue más que un buen ejercicio, fue una oportunidad poderosa para hacer visible nuestra iglesia en el vecindario. La gente vio nuestros rostros, nuestra alegría y nuestro compromiso de ser parte de la comunidad. Nos vieron como una congregación que no solo adora dentro de las paredes de la iglesia, sino que también sale a estar presente con los demás donde ellos están. Ese tipo de visibilidad importa. Genera confianza, despierta curiosidad e invita a la conversación.

Aun así, creo que lo más importante de estos eventos no es solo la visibilidad, sino el amor que nos impulsa a ser visibles en primer lugar. Jesús nos manda a amar a nuestros prójimos, y cada bola de helado servida, cada sonrisa compartida en el recorrido del desfile, cada “hola” amistoso fue una manera de vivir ese mandamiento. Cuando la gente nos encuentra, mi esperanza es que no solo vean a una iglesia, sino que sientan el amor de Dios irradiando a través de nosotros.

A todos los que participaron de alguna manera, ya sea organizando, donando, marchando o echando porras, les digo gracias de todo corazón. Ustedes hicieron de este fin de semana del Día del Trabajo una verdadera celebración de comunidad y fe. Y a quienes estén pensando en unirse el próximo año, les digo: siempre son bienvenidos. Estos eventos no son solo para unos cuantos, sino para todos los que quieran compartir la alegría de dar, servir y amar como Jesús nos enseña.

DÍA DE TRABAJO PARROQUIAL

Se llevará a cabo el sábado 11 de octubre de 2025, de 9:00 a.m. a 2:00 p.m.

Si sabes de áreas que necesitan atención, añádelas a la lista.

Si hay áreas específicas donde te gustaría ayudar, por favor anótalas también en la hoja de inscripción.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZOS PARA EL REFUGIO DE HOMBRES

El programa de almuerzos del Refugio de Hombres provee lonches para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Los miembros generosos de Ascensión donan los insumos.

Dependiendo de la temporada, proporcionamos entre 40 y 80 lonches cada mes. El programa se realiza cada mes; el próximo será el 21 de septiembre a las 9:00 a.m.

Ven al Salón Parroquial y ayuda a preparar los sándwiches y lonches. Y por favor considera donar insumos, incluso si no puedes estar presente para armar las bolsas.

TRANSPORTE DOMINICAL A LA IGLESIA

Si estás dispuesto a ofrecer transporte de ida y vuelta a la iglesia para personas mayores u otros miembros que no pueden manejar, pero que desean asistir en persona, por favor avisa al Rev. Javier, a la Rev. Tracey o a la Diácona Rosa.

Tenemos algunos miembros de la familia de Ascensión que desean asistir, pero no pueden hacerlo porque no cuentan con transporte confiable.

VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

Ascensión se está asociando con St. Peter’s, Poolesville, para organizar un viaje de jóvenes/trabajo a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos apoyado económicamente en los últimos años.

Los organizadores esperan reunir al menos 14 participantes, y si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, habrá espacio también para adultos interesados.

Si te interesa, por favor comunícate con la Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) o con Angelique Cooper, nuestra líder del grupo de jóvenes.

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes están enfrentando distintas situaciones de vida, incluyendo enfermedad. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una manera poderosa de cuidarlos.

El personal de Ascensión trabaja arduamente para asegurar que nuestra lista de oración esté actualizada y que el clero de Ascensión pueda dar seguimiento a cada persona, para saber si necesita cuidado pastoral o apoyo.

Por ello, estamos en proceso de revisar la lista de oración y transferir algunos nombres a la lista extendida. También estamos tratando de relacionar cada nombre con la persona que solicitó que fuera añadido.

Te pedimos paciencia mientras trabajamos en este proceso. Sabemos que puede haber algún error o confusión, pero nuestra meta es mantener esta parte tan importante de la vida de oración de nuestra iglesia.

DETALLES IMPORTANTES

• Baños públicos · Mesas de picnic.
• Esta ubicación está a la vuelta de la calle, junto a las vías del tren al lado del City Hall. Hay estacionamiento dominical en ese lote y también en el estacionamiento junto a las vías, cerca de la gasolinera Shell. Otra opción es dejar tus cosas en el lugar y luego estacionarte en el estacionamiento público de enfrente.
• Tenemos reservado el shelter de 9:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m., pero hay otro evento después, por lo que necesitamos limpiar y llevar la basura al contenedor ubicado en el lugar. Hay acceso por banqueta hasta el shelter.
• Proveeremos hot dogs y hamburguesas con pan y complementos, además de agua, limonada, té helado y desechables. Dependiendo del número de personas que se registren, quizá llevemos una carpa portátil.
• Favor de registrarse y traer un platillo para compartir. Si todos se inscriben, evitaremos tener 12 guarniciones iguales.
• Se nos asignaron 12 mesas de picnic, por lo que necesitamos saber cuántas personas planean asistir.
• Considera traer sillas plegables o de jardín de tu casa, con tu nombre marcado.
• Los baños están junto al shelter.
• Tendremos juegos divertidos para los niños y tal vez algunos para los adultos, a menos que prefieras simplemente relajarte.

Únete a los miembros del Comité de Equidad y Justicia de Ascensión para un Día de Justicia Social, patrocinado por la Diócesis de Maryland y la Red Episcopal de Políticas Públicas de Maryland.

Nos reuniremos en St. Anne’s en Annapolis el sábado 27/9.

Reflexionaremos sobre estas preguntas:

• ¿Qué podemos hacer para ayudar a construir la cultura amorosa de Dios en donde vivimos y luchar por una sociedad más justa?
• ¿Dónde podemos sumar nuestra voz y nuestras acciones para responder al llamado de ser reparadores de la brecha?

Oramos, reflexionaremos y seremos inspirados por el obispo. Escucharemos a funcionarios electos y seremos retados por aliados, defensores y activistas para participar de lleno en el trabajo de la defensa y el cambio positivo.

El programa comienza a las 8:30 a.m. con el registro. La Oración de la Mañana será en la iglesia a las 9:30 a.m. Después de la sesión plenaria, nos trasladaremos al salón parroquial para una serie de talleres sobre distintas iniciativas legislativas y lo que podemos hacer para apoyarlas.

Se servirá un almuerzo en caja. Terminaremos con una retroalimentación final y saldremos a las 2:30 p.m.
