A Reflection on Ministry

This week we hold our annual Ministries Fair. It is a chance to showcase all of the wonderful work that goes on in our church community and our neighborhoods.

In pondering what ministry means, I went back and re-read portions of the Rev. Jenifer Gamber’s book Your Faith, Your Life: An Invitation to the Episcopal Church.

Here is what she writes about ministry:

“The Episcopal Church recognizes all baptized people as ministers of God’s kingdom. The ministers are laypeople, bishops, priests, and deacons. Everyone who’s been baptized shares a common ministry: representing Christ and his Church. We carry out most of God’s mission in our daily lives by greeting people kindly, doing our jobs with love and respect for others, lending a hand when needed, cooking for our family, and laughing and consoling friends and co-workers. We also carry out God’s mission by working to change laws to ensure people are treated fairly. Occupations such as researching cures for disease, seeking to address climate change, lobbying government for just laws, and spending a year serving the poor either domestically or abroad are also ways of participating in God’s mission. Through these actions we “carry out Christ’s work of reconciliation in the world.” Let’s look at reconciliation in the world more closely. What does reconciliation mean? Have you ever reconciled a bank statement? You compare your written record of deposits and withdrawals with the bank’s records and make adjustments to your account until the two balances match. Think about the reconciliation of the world the same way. There are two things: the world as we actually live it and the world as God calls us to live (God’s kingdom). So the work of reconciliation is making adjustments in how we live in an effort to make the world be a place of peace and wholeness….

So how do we live our ministry today? Many of us have loving families and friends, times when we laugh with others, basically healthy minds and bodies, and not too many roadblocks getting in the way of what we want. Some of us may face difficulties—loneliness, grief for the loss of a loved one, sickness and disease, discrimination and hatred, and perhaps days we don’t have enough to eat or warm clothes to wear. The world falls short of what God would like. Although we may see signs of God’s kingdom, it isn’t here completely. To know what our ministry is, we need to understand what that kingdom looks like and figure out what we can do to help make it happen….

Jesus’ words and actions show us God’s dream for us by bringing joy, community, abundance, and justice to the world. One of the first things Jesus did after his baptism was to call together a community of people—his disciples. They worshiped, studied, and prayed together, and they saw Jesus performing miracles, healing, forgiving, and gathering more people together. Jesus also sent this group of ordinary people to continue to do God’s work in the world. The people Jesus called were ordinary people just like us. Some were fishermen; others did work that was despised in the Jewish community, like collecting taxes. The disciples weren’t the smartest or the most faithful. Lots of times they doubted Jesus, and they fought over who was the most important. They weren’t particularly reliable either. After all, they fell asleep in the garden the night before Jesus was crucified, even though he asked them to stay up with him. They had weaknesses just like we do. All this tells us that we too, even in our shortcomings, are part of God’s beloved community called to carry out God’s mission. If these seemingly unworthy followers of Jesus could help bring about God’s kingdom, we can too. God does extraordinary things through ordinary people.”

If you are leading or involved in one of Ascension’s great ministries, I want to say THANK YOU on behalf of all of us, and if you aren’t there isn’t any better time to become involved. You may feel ordinary, but to God you are extraordinary.

SUNDAY RIDES TO CHURCH

If you are willing to provide transportation to and from church for seniors or others who are not able to drive themselves but would still like to attend in person please let Rev. Javier, Rev. Tracey or Deacon Rosa know. We have a few Ascension family members who would like to attend but cannot do so because they do not have reliable transportation.

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) or Angelique Cooper, our Youth Group Leader.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support.

To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mixup or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!! 

INTERESTED IN CONFIRMATION OR RECEPTION?

Are you interested in either being confirmed into the Episcopal Church or if you have already been confirmed in another faith being received into the Episcopal Church?

Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop.

If you are interested please let Padre Javier or Rev. Tracey know. Classes will begin at Ascension on Sunday September 28th at 9:00 a.m. in the library and will be held each week through November 2nd.

This year’s confirmation and reception service will be held at the National Cathedral on November 15th at 10:00 a.m. where our Bishop will confirm and receive those who wish to formally join the Episcopal Church.

PARISH WORK DAY will be held on Saturday,

October 11, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS, SUNDAY OCTOBER 5

In observance of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, we will be blessing your feline, avian, canine, bovine, equine, porcine, reptilian, and arachnid friends at a 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 5. Please invite your friends to bring their pets too!

September 21 will be the first day of Sunday School.

We will be baking Communion Bread during both the 10:00 and 12:00 services.

All kids are welcome!

Una Reflexión sobre el Ministerio

Esta semana tenemos nuestra Feria Anual de Ministerios. Es una oportunidad para mostrar todo el maravilloso trabajo que se realiza en nuestra comunidad de iglesia y en nuestros vecindarios.

Al reflexionar sobre lo que significa el ministerio, volví a leer algunas partes del libro de la Rev. Jenifer Gamber Tu Fe, Tu Vida: Una Invitación a la Iglesia Episcopal.

Esto es lo que ella escribe sobre el ministerio:

“La Iglesia Episcopal reconoce a todas las personas bautizadas como ministros del Reino de Dios. Los ministros son laicos, obispos, presbíteros y diáconos. Toda persona que ha sido bautizada comparte un ministerio común: representar a Cristo y a su Iglesia. Llevamos a cabo la mayor parte de la misión de Dios en nuestra vida diaria al saludar a las personas con amabilidad, hacer nuestro trabajo con amor y respeto hacia los demás, tender una mano cuando se necesita, cocinar para nuestra familia, y reír y consolar a amigos y compañeros de trabajo. También llevamos a cabo la misión de Dios al trabajar para cambiar leyes y asegurar que las personas sean tratadas con justicia. Ocupaciones como investigar curas para enfermedades, buscar soluciones al cambio climático, cabildear al gobierno por leyes justas, o dedicar un año al servicio de los pobres ya sea en nuestro país o en el extranjero, también son maneras de participar en la misión de Dios. A través de estas acciones “realizamos la obra de reconciliación de Cristo en el mundo”.

Veamos más de cerca qué significa la reconciliación en el mundo. ¿Alguna vez has conciliado un estado de cuenta bancario? Comparas tu registro escrito de depósitos y retiros con los registros del banco y haces ajustes hasta que ambos saldos coincidan. Piensa en la reconciliación del mundo de la misma manera. Hay dos cosas: el mundo tal como lo vivimos en realidad y el mundo al que Dios nos llama a vivir (el Reino de Dios). Así que el trabajo de la reconciliación es hacer ajustes en la manera en que vivimos para tratar de hacer que el mundo sea un lugar de paz e integridad…

Entonces, ¿cómo vivimos nuestro ministerio hoy? Muchos de nosotros tenemos familias y amigos amorosos, momentos en que reímos con otros, básicamente mentes y cuerpos sanos, y no demasiados obstáculos que nos impidan lograr lo que queremos. Algunos de nosotros, en cambio, enfrentamos dificultades: soledad, duelo por la pérdida de un ser querido, enfermedad, discriminación y odio, e incluso días en que no tenemos suficiente para comer o ropa abrigadora que usar. El mundo se queda corto respecto a lo que Dios quisiera. Aunque podamos ver señales del Reino de Dios, aún no está aquí completamente. Para saber cuál es nuestro ministerio, necesitamos entender cómo es ese Reino y descubrir qué podemos hacer para ayudar a que se haga realidad…

Las palabras y acciones de Jesús nos muestran el sueño de Dios para nosotros al traer gozo, comunidad, abundancia y justicia al mundo. Una de las primeras cosas que hizo Jesús después de su bautismo fue reunir a una comunidad de personas: sus discípulos. Ellos adoraban, estudiaban y oraban juntos, y vieron a Jesús hacer milagros, sanar, perdonar y reunir a más personas. Jesús también envió a este grupo de gente común a continuar haciendo la obra de Dios en el mundo. Las personas que Jesús llamó eran gente ordinaria como nosotros. Algunos eran pescadores; otros tenían trabajos despreciados en la comunidad judía, como cobrar impuestos. Los discípulos no eran los más inteligentes ni los más fieles. Muchas veces dudaban de Jesús y peleaban sobre quién era el más importante. Tampoco eran muy confiables: después de todo, se durmieron en el huerto la noche antes de la crucifixión, aunque Jesús les pidió que velaran con él. Tenían debilidades, igual que nosotros. Todo esto nos muestra que nosotros también, aun con nuestras limitaciones, formamos parte de la comunidad amada de Dios, llamados a llevar a cabo su misión. Si estos seguidores aparentemente indignos de Jesús pudieron ayudar a hacer presente el Reino de Dios, nosotros también podemos. Dios hace cosas extraordinarias a través de personas ordinarias.”

Si estás liderando o participando en uno de los grandes ministerios de la Ascensión, quiero decirte GRACIAS de parte de todos nosotros. Y si aún no lo haces, no hay mejor momento para involucrarte. Puede que te sientas común y corriente, pero para Dios eres extraordinario.

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes enfrentan una gran variedad de situaciones, incluyendo enfermedades. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una manera poderosa de cuidarlos.

El personal de Ascensión trabaja para mantener actualizada la lista de oración y para que el clero pueda dar seguimiento a cada persona, brindando cuidado o apoyo pastoral según sea necesario.

Estamos revisando la lista actual y transfiriendo algunos nombres a la lista extendida. También tratamos de confirmar quién pidió que se agregaran ciertos nombres. Les pedimos paciencia mientras realizamos este proceso. ¡Gracias por ayudarnos en esta parte tan importante de la vida de oración de nuestra iglesia!

¿INTERESADO EN LA CONFIRMACIÓN O RECEPCIÓN?

¿Está interesado en recibir la Confirmación en la Iglesia Episcopal o, si ya fue confirmado en otra fe, en ser recibido formalmente en la Iglesia Episcopal?

La confirmación en nuestra iglesia es un rito pastoral sacramental que consiste en la reafirmación de los votos bautismales, con una bendición y la imposición de manos por parte del obispo.

Reimaginando el Ministerio Intergeneracional

Acompáñenos en este Día de Aprendizaje patrocinado por la Escuela Diocesana de Fe Cristiana y Liderazgo, para explorar el ministerio intergeneracional.

Los participantes escucharán a congregaciones de EDOW que están encontrando maneras creativas de reimaginar la Escuela Dominical y el aprendizaje y la adoración entre generaciones. Además, la conferencista invitada Sarah Bentley Allred compartirá sobre las amplias posibilidades de encontrarnos con las generaciones actuales donde están.

• Podemos unirnos al ministerio activo de abogacía en políticas públicas respondiendo a las alertas de acción de EPPN. Así, unimos nuestras voces con episcopales de toda la iglesia para influir en la legislación y políticas del gobierno de EE.UU. en asuntos críticos. Regístrese en línea.
