Further Reflecting on Saint Matthew’s Gospel

Katelyn Printz, a Seminarian currently serving at St. Columba’s in DC, wrote the following reflection on Saint Matthew’s Gospel which we have spent several weeks with this Summer. Her writing illuminates some aspects of the Gospel that may have been missed and are worth sharing. She writes: “The Gospel of Matthew weaves a theological narrative across a geographical journey, as Jesus travels from Galilee to Jerusalem, teaching and healing along the way. In Matthew, the kingdom of heaven becomes a recurring theme, presented across a sequence of five major discourses Jesus gives—a structure the author may have used to mirror the five books of the Torah in the Old Testament. In this gospel, Jesus’s discourses are interspersed between narrative sections, similar to the way a movie might utilize the interplay of a third person narrator and personal dialogue to advance the plot….

…When Jesus hears the news of his friend John’s death, he distances himself both from the disciples and the crowd by sailing away alone in search of a quieter place. However, this very news seems to only pique the crowd’s interest in him and how he might respond to the murder…. .Jesus responds with compassion and welcome. It is Jesus’s compassion that compels him to return to shore and rejoin the crowd, curing the sick among them until late in the day. 

As evening falls, the disciples approach Jesus and remind him of the remoteness of their location and lateness of the hour. They encourage him to “send the crowds away so that they may go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus responds, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” The first half of his statement, “they need not go away,” is only recorded in Matthew’s Gospel and it underscores the same compassion Jesus embodies when he returns to shore to teach and heal. 

Matthew offers with this scene a glimpse into a banquet in the kingdom of heaven: No one is turned away; all are welcomed with relentless compassion. This stands in direct opposition to Herod’s drunken birthday dinner, which leads only to death and violence….

When Jesus blesses, breaks, and returns to the disciples the food they initially considered insufficient, the power of God transforms their perceived scarcity into astounding plenty. The text tells us that it is the disciples themselves who distribute the bread and fish to the crowd. They continue to participate in God’s work of abundance until twelve baskets overflow with leftovers, and everyone is full. 

We are offered our own opportunity to play the role of the disciples at God’s banquet. What is blessed, broken, and given to us in the Eucharist becomes the starting point for God’s unfolding work of abundance. Like the disciples, we are invited to live with the compassion of Jesus, not compelled by scarcity or the whim of empire, but grounded in and living out the radical welcome extended to all who are fed in the kingdom of heaven.

Where do you see Jesus’s compassion at work in your life and our world today? How can your life or your community become the starting point for God’s work of abundance? Imagine you are one of the disciples holding one of the twelve baskets overflowing with leftovers when everyone is full. What do the contents of your basket look like? And how can you share those contents with others?

BACKPACKS FOR LINKAGES TO LEARNING

It's that time of year again! As a church, we have the opportunity to help students at Summit Hall Elementary School start the new school year with the supplies they need to succeed. We are once again collecting school supplies for the Linkages to Learning program, which serves children and families in our community. If you're able to help, please pick up a supply list in the narthex or visit the Ascension website. Don't feel like you have to buy everything on the list, every notebook, box of crayons, pencil, or backpack makes a difference. Simply give what you can. Please bring your donations to church by Sunday, August 16. Thank you for helping us share God's love.

Parish Life is starting a new crafting event! Sessions will be held on the second and third Saturdays of the month until the end of the year. Join us in Room 1 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW PARISH ADMINISTRATOR SOLANGE TOURA GABA

We are very excited to welcome Ascension’s new Parish Administrator. Solange, pronounced “So-longe,” comes to Ascension after a career in government working for the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). She brings many skills to her new position and we are very happy that she has joined the Ascension team. Solange has lived all over the world. She was born in Germany, and has lived in France, Chad and spent a year in Afghanistan working for SIGAR. In her free time she likes to go to the gym, teach swimming to kids, listen to music and watch British mysteries. In addition to welcoming Solange, the rest of the Ascension staff would like to give a giant THANK YOU to all the wonderful volunteers who have staffed the office during the transition period and have kept the office running smoothly. We appreciate and are so grateful for each and every one of you!!

THE MEN’S SHELTER LUNCH PROGRAM

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The program takes place every month; our next one is August 16 at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging.

ESTA SEMANA EN ASCENSION

Decimo Domingo despues de Pentecostes

Reflexionando aún más sobre el Evangelio de San Mateo

Katelyn Printz, seminarista que actualmente presta su servicio en San Columba en Washington D.C., escribió la siguiente reflexión sobre el Evangelio de San Mateo, el cual hemos estado acompañando durante varias semanas este verano. Su escrito ilumina algunos aspectos del Evangelio que quizás hayamos pasado por alto y que vale la pena compartir. Ella escribe:

«El Evangelio de Mateo entreteje una narrativa teológica a lo largo de un recorrido geográfico, a medida que Jesús viaja de Galilea a Jerusalén enseñando y sanando en el camino. En Mateo, el reino de los cielos se convierte en un tema recurrente presentado a través de una secuencia de cinco grandes discursos que pronuncia Jesús; una estructura que el autor pudo haber utilizado para reflejar los cinco libros de la Torá en el Antiguo Testamento. En este evangelio, los discursos de Jesús se intercalan entre secciones narrativas, de forma similar a como una película utiliza el juego entre un narrador en tercera persona y los diálogos personales para hacer avanzar la trama…

…Cuando Jesús recibe la noticia de la muerte de su amigo Juan, toma distancia tanto de los discípulos como de la multitud y navega a solas en busca de un lugar más tranquilo. Sin embargo, esta misma noticia parece solo despertar aún más el interés de la gente hacia él y hacia cómo respondería ante tal asesinato… Jesús responde con compasión y acogida. Es precisamente su compasión la que lo impulsa a regresar a la orilla y reunirse de nuevo con la gente, curando a sus enfermos hasta ya entrada la tarde.

Al caer la noche, los discípulos se acercan a Jesús y le recuerdan lo alejado del lugar y lo tarde de la hora. Lo animan diciendo: “Despide a la multitud para que vayan a las aldeas a comprarse de comer”. Jesús les responde: “No tienen necesidad de irse; denles ustedes de comer”. La primera parte de su afirmación, “no tienen necesidad de irse”, solo está registrada en el Evangelio de Mateo y subraya esa misma compasión que Jesús encarna cuando vuelve a la orilla para enseñar y sanar.

Con esta escena, Mateo nos ofrece un destello de lo que es un banquete en el reino de los cielos: nadie es rechazado; todos son bienvenidos con una compasión incansable. Esto se opone directamente al banquete de cumpleaños de Herodes, ebrio de poder, que solo conduce a la muerte y la violencia…

Cuando Jesús bendice, parte y regresa a los discípulos el alimento que ellos inicialmente consideraban insuficiente, el poder de Dios transforma su percepción de escasez en una abundancia sorprendente. El texto nos dice que son los propios discípulos quienes distribuyen el pan y el pescado a la multitud. Ellos continúan participando en la obra de abundancia de Dios hasta que doce canastas se desbordan de sobras y todos quedan satisfechos.

A nosotros se nos ofrece nuestra propia oportunidad de asumir el papel de los discípulos en el banquete de Dios. Lo que es bendecido, partido y entregado a nosotros en la Eucaristía se convierte en el punto de partida para que la obra de abundancia de Dios se despliegue. Al igual que los discípulos, estamos invitados a vivir con la compasión de Jesús, no movidos por la escasez ni por los caprichos del imperio, sino cimentados y viviendo la acogida radical que se le ofrece a todo aquel que es alimentado en el reino de los cielos».

¿En dónde ves la compasión de Jesús obrando en tu vida y en nuestro mundo hoy? ¿De qué manera tu vida o tu comunidad pueden convertirse en el punto de partida para la obra de abundancia de Dios? Imagina que eres uno de los discípulos sosteniendo una de las doce canastas que se desbordan de sobras cuando todos ya han comido hasta saciarse. ¿Cómo se ve el contenido de tu canasta? ¿Y de qué manera puedes compartir ese contenido con los demás? Estamos muy entusiasmados de darle la bienvenida a la nueva Administradora Parroquial de Ascension. Solange viene a Ascension tras una trayectoria profesional en el gobierno, trabajando para la Inspección General Especial para la Reconstrucción de Afganistán (SIGAR por sus siglas en inglés). Ella aporta un gran bagaje de habilidades a su nuevo puesto y nos alegra muchísimo que se haya sumado al equipo de Ascension. Solange ha vivido en distintas partes del mundo. Nació en Alemania y ha vivido en Francia y Chad, además de haber pasado un año en Afganistán trabajando para SIGAR. En su tiempo libre le gusta ir al gimnasio, dar clases de natación a niños, escuchar música y ver series británicas de misterio. Además de darle la bienvenida a Solange, todo el equipo de Ascension quiere dar un enorme ¡GRACIAS! a todos los maravillosos voluntarios que apoyaron en la oficina durante este periodo de transición y permitieron que todo siguiera funcionando a la perfección. ¡Apreciamos y estamos profundamente agradecidos con cada uno de ustedes!

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZOS PARA EL ALBERGUE DE HOMBRES

El programa de almuerzos para el albergue de hombres proporciona lonches empacados para hombres en situación de calle. Los almuerzos se preparan en el salón parroquial una vez al mes gracias a las generosas donaciones de insumos por parte de los miembros de Ascension. Dependiendo de la época del año, entregamos entre 40 y 80 almuerzos mensuales. El programa se lleva a cabo cada mes; nuestra próxima cita es el 16 de agosto a las 9:00 a.m. Ven al sótano de la iglesia (Undercroft) y ayúdanos a preparar los sándwiches y empacar los almuerzos. Si no puedes asistir a armar los lonches, por favor considera apoyar con la donación de insumos.
