Our English Bible Study will not meet this week. We’ll take a short break for the holidays and gather again on Monday, January 5 in the Library.

When we return, we will jump into Exodus 16, the moment when the people of Israel step into the wilderness and immediately start wrestling with hunger, fear, and God’s surprising ways of providing. This is the chapter of manna and quail, of daily bread that teaches them (and honestly, teaches us) what trust looks like when the road ahead isn’t clear. It’s a good chapter for a new year. I hope you’ll join me on January 5 as we continue the journey. Bring your questions, your insights, and your stories. There’s always room for you.

As we continue walking together in faith, I invite you to consider serving in leadership here at Ascension. This year, we are looking for three new Vestry members, one delegate to Diocesan Convention, and one alternate. Serving on the Vestry is an important ministry. It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about caring deeply for our church and being willing to listen, pray, and work together for the good of our community. Vestry members help guide the direction of our parish, make decisions about our ministries and resources, and support our mission to be a place where all are welcome and loved. The Convention delegate and alternate have the privilege of representing our congregation at the Diocesan Convention. They join with other Episcopal churches in prayer, conversation, and discernment about how we live out our common mission in the wider church. If you feel called to serve or if you know someone whose gifts would bless our leadership, please talk with me, Betsy, Fredis or Marcia. We need faithful hearts and willing hands to continue building up this beautiful community. Let’s keep listening together to where the Holy Spirit is leading us next. Love, Javier

This is the final week of Advent. The Godly Play Advent lessons help us prepare for the Mystery of Christmas. We move toward Bethlehem, guided by the pointing prophets, with the Holy Family, the shepherds and the Magi. We arrive at the birth of Jesus and the lighting of the Christ Candle in the church. This week we focus on the wise men and the celebration of Christmas.

Advent started on November 30th. This year in addition to making the book “Living Well Through Advent 2025” available for your own personal or family reflection, throughout Advent we will be inviting you to place your hopes and the promises of God into a Hope Basket which will be located near the entry of the sanctuary. Each week there will be slips of paper and pens available for writing and placing personal hopes for healing, reconciliation, growth or anything else we hope for in the Hope Basket. During Advent a few of the hopes will be randomly chosen to be read aloud during our services and also in our social media posts to serve as an affirmation that the coming of the Christ child will be an answer to our deepest longings. The hopes collected during Advent will not go away at Christmas, they will be saved and brought out in various seasons of the year as a reminder that our hopes do not go away when Christmas is over and as a reminder that our hope in Christ continues well beyond the Christmas season. Stay tuned for additional instructions but begin thinking about where in your life do you most need hope right now?

Ascension will be doing the Giving Tree again this year. We will be collecting items for the following needs - The Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen, Gaithersburg Help, Comfort Cases, Linkages to Learning, and the Ascension Pantry. The cards with the items are available in the narthex. Linkages to Learning is asking for gift cards this year because many of the families they serve have been significantly impacted by the current economic and immigration situation in our area. They have many different needs that are best dealt with using gift cards. We are asking for gift cards with a minimum of $10.00. Please consider going in on a gift card with a friend. Alternatively, you can provide smaller amounts of cash. We are bringing this opportunity to share the holiday spirit with our community internally and at large so that you can plan. The Linkages to Learning program ended with items needing to be at church one week ago. today, December 14. Thank you for your support of this activity.

Hello! Our Annual Giving season, which ran from October through November, was successful. We collected many pledges from our parishioners which will help fund our church in 2026. We would like to close out the pledge drive fully by accepting a few outstanding pledges. Please fill out a pledge card if you haven’t already done so. It is totally acceptable to make a ‘soft’ pledge with a flexible amount, a zero amount, or even a note that says, ‘ask me again in 2026’. Completed pledge forms are important to ensure that everyone in our church community is counted.  A follow-up courtesy communication via phone/email for outstanding pledges will be made this week. You may reach out to Marge Kling via text (301-651-9371) or via email at treasurer@ascensionmd.org for help with these outstanding pledges. Lastly, please stay tuned for a Vestry-sponsored Pledge Appreciation luncheon scheduled for December 28th after the 1A service.

Over 700 children enter the foster care system every single day. Most are given a trash bag to carry their belongings.... These children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter. Many do not own a toothbrush or have a pair of pajamas. At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. The season of giving is upon us, and once again Comfort Cases in Rockville needs our help for children entering foster care. Please place items for donation in the bin in the hallway between Rooms 4 & 5. Here are the needed items: 

1.TOP PRIORITY: Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XLarge (larger sizes are particularly welcome, as many teens need them).

2.Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.

3.Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

NOTE: All items must be NEW, and tags must still be attached (when possible). Please, NO holiday or religious themes. NO toiletries are needed at this time. The Comfort Cases staff are extremely grateful for all our donations! They have thanked us heartily for the many bins of donated items we have brought them throughout the years. Questions? ESTUDIO BÍBLICO DE LOS LUNES – 7:00 P.M.

Nuestro Estudio Bíblico en inglés no se reunirá esta semana. Tomaremos un breve receso por las fiestas y nos reuniremos nuevamente el lunes 5 de enero en la Biblioteca. Al regresar, comenzaremos con Éxodo 16, el momento en que el pueblo de Israel entra al desierto y de inmediato enfrenta el hambre, el temor y las sorprendentes maneras en que Dios provee. Este es el capítulo del maná y las codornices, del pan de cada día que les enseña (y, siendo honestos, nos enseña a nosotros) cómo se ve la confianza cuando el camino por delante no es claro. Es un excelente capítulo para iniciar el año. Espero que nos acompañe el 5 de enero mientras continuamos el camino. Traiga sus preguntas, reflexiones e historias. Siempre hay lugar para usted.

NECESIDAD DE MIEMBROS PARA LA VESTRY Y DELEGADOS A LA CONVENCIÓN

Mientras continuamos caminando juntos en la fe, les invito a considerar servir en liderazgo aquí en Ascension. Este año buscamos tres nuevos miembros para la Junta Parroquial, un delegado a la Convención Diocesana y un delegado alterno.

Servir en la Vestry es un ministerio importante. No se trata de tener todas las respuestas, sino de amar profundamente a nuestra iglesia y estar dispuestos a escuchar, orar y trabajar juntos por el bien de nuestra comunidad. Los miembros de la Junta Parroquial ayudan a guiar la dirección de nuestra parroquia, tomar decisiones sobre nuestros ministerios y recursos, y apoyar nuestra misión de ser un lugar donde todos son bienvenidos y amados. El delegado y el alterno a la Convención tienen el privilegio de representar a nuestra congregación en la Convención Diocesana, uniéndose con otras iglesias episcopales en oración, diálogo y discernimiento sobre cómo vivimos nuestra misión común en la iglesia más amplia. GODLY PLAY

Esta es la tercera semana de Adviento. Las lecciones de Adviento de Godly Play nos ayudan a prepararnos para el Misterio de la Navidad. Caminamos hacia Belén, guiados por los profetas que señalan el camino, junto con la Sagrada Familia, los pastores y los Magos. Llegamos al nacimiento de Jesús y al encendido de la Vela de Cristo en la iglesia. La presentación de esta semana se enfoca en los pastores.

ACTIVIDAD DE REFLEXIÓN DE ADVIENTO

El Adviento comenzó el 30 de noviembre. Este año, además de poner a su disposición el libro “Vivir Bien el Adviento 2025” para la reflexión personal o familiar, durante el Adviento les invitamos a colocar sus esperanzas y las promesas de Dios en una Canasta de la Esperanza, que estará ubicada cerca de la entrada del santuario. Cada semana habrá papelitos y plumas disponibles para escribir y colocar en la Canasta de la Esperanza sus esperanzas personales de sanación, reconciliación, crecimiento o cualquier otra cosa por la que anhelen. Durante el Adviento, algunas de estas esperanzas serán elegidas al azar para leerse en voz alta durante nuestros servicios y también compartirse en nuestras redes sociales, como una afirmación de que la venida del Niño Cristo es respuesta a nuestros anhelos más profundos. Las esperanzas reunidas durante el Adviento no desaparecerán en Navidad; se guardarán y se volverán a compartir en distintas temporadas del año, como recordatorio de que nuestras esperanzas no terminan cuando pasa la Navidad y de que nuestra esperanza en Cristo continúa mucho más allá del tiempo navideño. Estén atentos a más instrucciones, pero vayan pensando: ¿en qué área de su vida necesita más esperanza en este momento?

Marquen también en sus calendarios el miércoles 17 de diciembre, cuando ofreceremos un mini retiro de Adviento presencial para reflexionar sobre nuestro caminar durante el Adviento y sobre nuestras esperanzas y sueños para la Navidad y más allá.

ÁRBOL DE GENEROSIDAD (GIVING TREE)

Ascension llevará a cabo nuevamente el Árbol de Generosidad este año. Estaremos recolectando artículos para las siguientes organizaciones y ministerios: The Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen, Gaithersburg Help, Comfort Cases, Linkages to Learning y la Despensa de Ascension. Las tarjetas con los artículos solicitados están disponibles en el nártex. Este año, Linkages to Learning solicita tarjetas de regalo, ya que muchas de las familias a las que sirven se han visto significativamente afectadas por la situación económica y migratoria actual en nuestra área. ¡Saludos! Nuestra temporada anual de ofrendas, que se llevó a cabo de octubre a noviembre, fue exitosa. Recibimos muchos compromisos de nuestros feligreses que ayudarán a financiar nuestra iglesia en 2026. Nos gustaría cerrar completamente la campaña aceptando algunos compromisos pendientes. Por favor complete una tarjeta de compromiso si aún no lo ha hecho. Es totalmente aceptable hacer un compromiso “flexible”, con una cantidad variable, una cantidad de cero, o incluso una nota que diga: “pregúntenme de nuevo en 2026”. Más de 700 niños ingresan al sistema de cuidado temporal (foster care) todos los días. A muchos se les entrega una bolsa de basura para llevar sus pertenencias… Estos niños han sido descuidados y con frecuencia sienten que no importan. Muchos no tienen un cepillo de dientes ni un par de pijamas. En Comfort Cases, creemos que cada niño merece sentir dignidad. Cada niño merece guardar sus pertenencias en una mochila especial que pueda llamar suya.

La temporada de dar ya está aquí y, una vez más, Comfort Cases en Rockville necesita nuestra ayuda para apoyar a los niños que ingresan al sistema de cuidado temporal.
