BEFORE THE CALENDAR CHANGES

I love that we are celebrating the New Year’s three days before the actual celebration. It feels very much like us. Not rushed. Not performative. Just honest. We are gathering while the year is still unfinished, while there is still room to breathe, to look back gently, and to look forward without pretending we have everything figured out.

Before anything else, I need to say thank you. And I mean that deeply.

This past year has been full; full of work, full of change, full of moments that stretched us and moments that reminded us why this community matters so much. You have shown up in ways both visible and quiet. You served on committees, helped behind the scenes, prayed faithfully, gave generously, welcomed new faces, and stayed connected even when life was heavy or complicated. Some of you carried the church in ways no one else saw. God saw it. And I want you to hear it clearly: it mattered.

Because of you, Ascension continues to be more than a church we attend. It is a community we belong to.

As we look toward a new year, I want to hold two hopes together. The first is spiritual growth. That we continue to deepen our prayer life, our trust in God, and our love for one another. That we keep making space for questions, for healing, for honest faith that doesn’t rush past doubt or pain. That we become more rooted, not just busier.

And yes, the second hope is growth in numbers. Not for the sake of being bigger, but because there are people all around us who are hungry for community, longing for meaning, and looking for a place where they can be fully themselves. Ascension can be that place. But people won’t come if they don’t know we are here.

So here is my very practical invitation for the new year: invite someone. A neighbor. A friend. A family member. Someone you have thought about inviting but haven’t yet. You don’t need the perfect words. You don’t need to have answers. Just say, “Come with me.” Let God do the rest.

Now, about resolutions. I’m not interested in big promises we won’t remember by February. I’m much more interested in faithful intentions we can actually live into.

What if our resolution is simply this: to show up a little more intentionally?

To pray a little more honestly?

To listen a little more carefully?

To give in ways that are generous but also sustainable?

Not perfection. Just faithfulness.

This new year will bring changes, I am sure some of it will be joyful, some of it will be challenging. But we don’t walk into it alone. We walk into it as a community that has already proven it can adapt, grow, and love through uncertainty.

So today, three days before the calendar flips, we give thanks. We name our hopes. And we trust that God is already at work in the year ahead, calling us, shaping us, and inviting us to keep becoming who we are meant to be.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Thank you for loving this parish. Thank you for walking with me.

Our English Bible Study will not meet this week. We’ll take a short break for the holidays and gather again on Monday, January 5 in the Library. When we return, we will jump into Exodus 16, the moment when the people of Israel step into the wilderness and immediately start wrestling with hunger, fear, and God’s surprising ways of providing. This is the chapter of manna and quail, of daily bread that teaches them (and honestly, teaches us) what trust looks like when the road ahead isn’t clear. It’s a good chapter for a new year. I hope you’ll join me on January 5 as we continue the journey. Bring your questions, your insights, and your stories. There’s always room for you.

Thanks to your overwhelming generosity the food pantry is well stocked! As needs arise we will be providing updates in this space. Please encourage anyone who has a need or knows someone who is in need to use the pantry.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 11, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Ascension Parish Hall. All students in 6th grade and up (including alumni) are welcome. As we continue walking together in faith, I invite you to consider serving in leadership here at Ascension. This year, we are looking for three new Vestry members, one delegate to Diocesan Convention, and one alternate. Serving on the Vestry is an important ministry. It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about caring deeply for our church and being willing to listen, pray, and work together for the good of our community. Vestry members help guide the direction of our parish, make decisions about our ministries and resources, and support our mission to be a place where all are welcome and loved. The Convention delegate and alternate have the privilege of representing our congregation at the Diocesan Convention. They join with other Episcopal churches in prayer, conversation, and discernment about how we live out our common mission in the wider church. If you feel called to serve or if you know someone whose gifts would bless our leadership, please talk with me, Betsy, Fredis or Marcia. We need faithful hearts and willing hands to continue building up this beautiful community. Let’s keep listening together to where the Holy Spirit is leading us next. Love, Javier

One Ascension Sunday

We will gather as one community to celebrate, reflect, and give thanks for the life and mission of our church.

Hello! Our Annual Giving season, which ran from October through November, was successful. We collected many pledges from our parishioners which will help fund our church in 2026. We would like to close out the pledge drive fully by accepting a few outstanding pledges. Please fill out a pledge card if you haven’t already done so. It is totally acceptable to make a ‘soft’ pledge with a flexible amount, a zero amount, or even a note that says, ‘ask me again in 2026’. Completed pledge forms are important to ensure that everyone in our church community is counted.  A follow-up courtesy communication via phone/email for outstanding pledges will be made this week. You may reach out to Marge Kling via text (301-651-9371) or via email at treasurer@ascensionmd.org for help with these outstanding pledges. Lastly, please stay tuned for a Vestry-sponsored Pledge Appreciation luncheon scheduled for December 28th after the 1A service.

Over 700 children enter the foster care system every single day. Most are given a trash bag to carry their belongings.... These children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter. Many do not own a toothbrush or have a pair of pajamas. At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. The season of giving is upon us, and once again Comfort Cases in Rockville needs our help for children entering foster care. Please place items for donation in the bin in the hallway between Rooms 4 & 5. Here are the needed items: 

1.TOP PRIORITY: Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XLarge (larger sizes are particularly welcome, as many teens need them).

2.Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.

3.Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

NOTE: All items must be NEW, and tags must still be attached (when possible). Please, NO holiday or religious themes. NO toiletries are needed at this time. The Comfort Cases staff are extremely grateful for all our donations! They have thanked us heartily for the many bins of donated items we have brought them throughout the years. Questions? Antes De Que Cambie El Calendario

Me gusta mucho que estemos celebrando el Año Nuevo tres días antes de la fecha oficial. Se siente muy a nosotros. Sin prisas. Sin poses. Simplemente honestos. Nos reunimos cuando el año todavía no ha terminado, cuando aún hay espacio para respirar, para mirar atrás con cariño y para mirar hacia adelante sin fingir que ya tenemos todo resuelto.

Pero, antes que nada, me gustaría darles las gracias. Lo digo de todo corazón.

Este último año ha sido intenso: lleno de trabajo, de cambios, de momentos que nos estiraron y de otros que nos recordaron por qué esta comunidad es tan importante. Ustedes se hicieron presentes de maneras visibles y también silenciosas. Sirvieron en comités, ayudaron entre bambalinas, oraron con fidelidad, dieron con generosidad, dieron la bienvenida a nuevas caras y se mantuvieron conectados incluso cuando la vida se volvió pesada o complicada. Algunos de ustedes sostuvieron a la iglesia de formas que nadie más vio. Dios sí lo vio. Y quiero que lo escuchen con claridad: sí importó.

Gracias a ustedes, Ascensión sigue siendo más que una iglesia a la que asistimos. Es una comunidad a la que pertenecemos.

Al mirar hacia el nuevo año, quiero sostener dos esperanzas. La primera es el crecimiento espiritual. Que sigamos profundizando en nuestra vida de oración, en nuestra confianza en Dios y en nuestro amor mutuo. Que sigamos creando espacio para las preguntas, para la sanación, para una fe honesta que no corre para saltarse la duda o el dolor. Que echemos raíces más profundas, no que simplemente estemos más ocupados.

Y sí, mi segunda esperanza es crecer en número. No por el simple hecho de ser más grandes, sino porque hay personas a nuestro alrededor que tienen hambre de comunidad, anhelo de sentido y buscan un lugar donde puedan ser plenamente quienes son. Ascensión puede ser ese lugar. Pero la gente no vendrá si no sabe que estamos aquí.

Así que, aquí va mi invitación muy práctica para el año nuevo: inviten a alguien. A un vecino. A un amigo. A un familiar. A esa persona que has pensado invitar, pero aún no lo has hecho. No necesitas las palabras perfectas. No necesitas tener todas las respuestas. Solo di: “Ven conmigo.” Deja que Dios haga el resto.

Ahora, sobre los propósitos de año nuevo. No me interesan las grandes promesas que olvidamos para febrero. Me interesan mucho más las intenciones fieles que sí podemos vivir.

¿Y si nuestro propósito fuera simplemente este?

Asistir a la iglesia con un poco más de intención.

Orar con un poco más de honestidad.

Escuchar con un poco más de atención.

Dar de maneras generosas, pero también sostenibles.

No perfección. Solo fidelidad.

Este año nuevo traerá cambios; estoy seguro de que algunos serán motivo de alegría y otros de desafío. Pero no entramos en él solos. Entramos como una comunidad que ya ha demostrado que puede adaptarse, crecer y amar en medio de la incertidumbre.

Así que este día, tres días antes de que cambie el calendario, demos gracias. Nombremos nuestras esperanzas. Y confiamos en que Dios ya está obrando en el año que viene, llamándonos, formándonos e invitándonos a seguir convirtiéndonos en quienes estamos llamados a ser.

Gracias por ser parte de este camino. Gracias por amar a esta parroquia. Gracias por caminar conmigo.

Nuestro Estudio Bíblico en inglés no se reunirá esta semana. Tomaremos un breve descanso por las fiestas y nos reuniremos nuevamente el lunes 5 de enero en la Biblioteca. Al regresar, comenzaremos con Éxodo 16, cuando el pueblo de Israel entra al desierto y de inmediato enfrenta el hambre, el miedo y las sorprendentes maneras en que Dios provee. Es el capítulo del maná y las codornices, del pan de cada día que les enseña (y, siendo sinceros, también nos enseña a nosotros) cómo se ve la confianza cuando el camino por delante no está claro. Es un buen capítulo para iniciar el año.

Espero que me acompañen el 5 de enero para continuar el camino. Traigan sus preguntas, sus reflexiones y sus historias. Siempre hay lugar para ustedes.

Nos reuniremos como una sola comunidad para celebrar, reflexionar y dar gracias por la vida y la misión de nuestra iglesia.

¡Hola! Nuestra campaña anual de promesas, que se llevó a cabo de octubre a noviembre, fue un éxito. Recibimos muchas promesas por parte de nuestros feligreses, las cuales ayudarán a financiar nuestra iglesia en 2026.

Nos gustaría cerrar completamente la campaña aceptando algunas promesas que aún están pendientes. Por favor complete una tarjeta de promesa si todavía no lo ha hecho. Es totalmente aceptable hacer una promesa “flexible”, con una cantidad abierta, una cantidad de $0, o incluso una nota que diga: “pregúntenme de nuevo en 2026”. Los formularios de promesa completados son importantes para asegurar que todas las personas de nuestra comunidad parroquial sean tomadas en cuenta.

Esta semana se realizará una comunicación de seguimiento, como cortesía, por teléfono o correo electrónico para las promesas pendientes. Más de 700 niños ingresan al sistema de cuidado temporal (foster care) todos los días. A muchos se les entrega una bolsa de basura para llevar sus pertenencias… Estos niños han sufrido abandono y con frecuencia sienten que no importan. Muchos no tienen ni un cepillo de dientes ni un par de pijamas. En Comfort Cases creemos que cada niño merece sentir dignidad. Cada niño merece guardar sus pertenencias en una bolsa especial que pueda llamar suya.
