Opening Our Doors Wider: A Season To Invite, Welcome, And Share Ascension’s Joy

I still remember my very first week as your Priest-in-Charge at Ascension. I walked into the building feeling excited, a little nervous, ready to begin… and the first thing that greeted me wasn’t a parishioner or a staff member. No — what welcomed me was a waterfall. Literally. A waterfall in the hallway by the elevator. Water everywhere. A tiny indoor Niagara Falls. And right there I thought, “Bueno… Lord, this is going to be an adventure.”

And wow, it has been.

From that first surprising welcome to today, we have traveled far together. This week, when I stepped onto our brand-new carpet — installed on Monday and Tuesday — I felt a deep wave of gratitude. Gratitude for how far we’ve come. Gratitude for every person who made this possible. Gratitude for a community that truly loves its sacred home. Now we just need to keep working and praying for a new roof.

To our generous donors: thank you. Seriously, thank you. You didn’t just give funds; you helped create a space that feels warm, clean, dignified, and welcoming. Every step we take on that carpet is a reminder of how much this community cares for the place where we pray, serve, and gather.

And yes, it’s wonderful to have beautiful things. It’s wonderful to walk through well-kept gardens, admire blooming flowers, and pray inside a building full of history and soul. But you and I know something important: a church is at its best when it is filled with people.

What good is a beautiful building if no one walks through the doors to experience the beauty inside — the beauty of worship, of community, of Christ alive among us?

That’s why this Christmas we want to do something simple but powerful: invite people into the beauty of Ascension. Not just to see the building, but to feel the love that lives here.

And this is where we need your help, yes, all Ascension Family.

We printed invitation cards with all our Christmas services — Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, everything!... Please take some home with you. And not one — take several! J Put them in your neighbors’ doors, leave them on cars, hand them to coworkers, friends, or whoever God places on your path.

In the past, we have focused on the neighborhood around the church. And that’s good. But imagine how far our welcome could reach if each of us invited from our own neighborhoods — Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville, Montgomery Village, and beyond.

You have neighbors I may never meet. But you are their bridge to Ascension. You are their warm invitation.

And don’t be shy. You’re not being pushy — you’re offering hope. People are more open to spiritual invitations during Christmas than any other time of year. A simple card can be the spark someone needs.

We have plenty of cards. Take them, pray over them if you wish, and share them with joy.

Together, let’s fill this beautiful church with beautiful people. Let’s invite our neighbors. Let’s welcome them the way Ascension welcomed me — with less water, and with much more love.

Our English Bible Study will not meet this week. We’ll take a short break for the holidays and gather again on Monday, January 5 in the Library.

When we return, we will jump into Exodus 16, the moment when the people of Israel step into the wilderness and immediately start wrestling with hunger, fear, and God’s surprising ways of providing. This is the chapter of manna and quail, of daily bread that teaches them (and honestly, teaches us) what trust looks like when the road ahead isn’t clear. It’s a good chapter for a new year. I hope you’ll join me on January 5 as we continue the journey. Bring your questions, your insights, and your stories. There’s always room for you.

GODLY PLAY

This is the third week of Advent. The Godly Play Advent lessons help us prepare for the Mystery of Christmas. We move toward Bethlehem, guided by the pointing prophets, with the Holy Family, the shepherds and the Magi. We arrive at the birth of Jesus and the lighting of the Christ Candle in the church. This week's presentation focuses on the prophets and the holy family.

GIVING TREE

Ascension will be doing the Giving Tree again this year. We will be collecting items for the following needs - The Lord’s Table Soup Kitchen, Gaithersburg Help, Comfort Cases, Linkages to Learning, and the Ascension Pantry. The cards with the items are available in the narthex. Linkages to Learning is asking for gift cards this year because many of the families they serve have been significantly impacted by the current economic and immigration situation in our area. They have many different needs that are best dealt with using gift cards. We are asking for gift cards with a minimum of $10.00. Please consider going in on a gift card with a friend. Alternatively, you can provide smaller amounts of cash. We are bringing this opportunity to share the holiday spirit with our community internally and at large so that you can make a plan. The Linkages to Learning items will need to be at church by December 14. Thank you for your support of this activity.

NEED OF VESTRY MEMBERS AND CONVENTION DELEGATES

As we continue walking together in faith, I invite you to consider serving in leadership here at Ascension. This year, we are looking for three new Vestry members, one delegate to Diocesan Convention, and one alternate.Serving on the Vestry is an important ministry. It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about caring deeply for our church and being willing to listen, pray, and work together for the good of our community. Vestry members help guide the direction of our parish, make decisions about our ministries and resources, and support our mission to be a place where all are welcome and loved.The Convention delegate and alternate have the privilege of representing our congregation at the Diocesan Convention. They join with other Episcopal churches in prayer, conversation, and discernment about how we live out our common mission in the wider church.If you feel called to serve or if you know someone whose gifts would bless our leadership, please talk with me, Betsy, Fredis or Marcia. ADVENT REFLECTION ACTIVITY — Advent starts on November 30th. This year in addition to making the book “Living Well Through Advent 2025” available for your own personal or family reflection, throughout Advent we will be inviting you to place your hopes and the promises of God into a Hope Basket which will be located near the entry of the sanctuary. Each week there will be slips of paper and pens available for writing and placing personal hopes for healing, reconciliation, growth or anything else we hope for in the Hope Basket. During Advent a few of the hopes will be randomly chosen to be read aloud during our services and also in our social media posts to serve as an affirmation that the coming of the Christ child will be an answer to our deepest longings. The hopes collected during Advent will not go away at Christmas, they will be saved and brought out in various seasons of the year as a reminder that our hopes do not go away when Christmas is over and as a reminder that our hope in Christ continues well beyond the Christmas season. Stay tuned for additional instructions but begin thinking about where in your life do you most need hope right now? Also mark on your calendars December 17th when we will offer a mini-Advent retreat in person to discuss our journey through the Advent season and our hopes and dreams for the Christmas season and beyond.

JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17TH FROM 5:00 PM – 7:00 pm for a special evening featuring a curated tour of international creches led by Lori and Chip Amos, former curators of Washington National Cathedral’s annual creche tour. They will share the history and traditions of Nativity scenes while guiding us through their remarkable collection gathered over decades and from countries across the globe. During the tour, enjoy our festive Cookie Battle! Sample delicious cookies and cast your vote by donating toward your favorite. The cookie that raises the most support will be crowned the winner. Proceeds will be used in support of Ascension's mission to ensure the dignity of all people. Abriendo Nuestras Puertas De Par En Par:

Una Temporada Para Invitar, Acoger Y Compartir La Alegría De Ascensión

Todavía me acuerdo perfectamente de mi primera semana como su Sacerdote Encargado en Ascensión. Entré al edificio con emoción, con un poquito de nervios, listo para comenzar… y lo primero que me recibió no fue un feligrés ni un miembro del personal. No, lo que me dio la bienvenida fue una cascada. Literalmente. Una cascada en el pasillo, junto al elevador. Agua por todos lados. Como unas mini Cataratas del Niágara dentro del edificio. Y ahí mismo pensé: “Bueno… Señor, esto sí que va a ser una aventura.”

Y vaya que lo ha sido.

Desde ese sorprendente recibimiento hasta hoy, hemos caminado mucho juntos. Esta semana, cuando pisé la alfombra nuevecita — instalada el lunes y martes — sentí una ola profunda de gratitud. Gratitud por lo lejos que hemos llegado. Gratitud por cada persona que hizo esto posible. Gratitud por una comunidad que de verdad ama su hogar sagrado. Ahora sólo nos falta seguir trabajando y orando por un nuevo techo.

A nuestras y nuestros donantes generosos: gracias. En serio, gracias. No sólo dieron dinero; ayudaron a crear un espacio que se siente cálido, limpio, digno y acogedor. Cada paso que damos sobre esa alfombra es un recordatorio de cuánto cuida esta comunidad el lugar donde oramos, servimos y nos reunimos.

Por supuesto que sí, es una maravilla tener cosas bonitas. Es hermoso caminar por jardines bien cuidados, ver flores en plena vida y orar dentro de un edificio lleno de historia y alma. Pero ustedes y yo sabemos algo importantísimo: una iglesia está en su mejor momento cuando está llena de gente.

¿De qué sirve un edificio hermoso si nadie cruza las puertas para experimentar la belleza que hay dentro — la belleza de la adoración, de la comunidad, de Cristo vivo entre nosotros?

Por eso esta Navidad queremos hacer algo sencillo pero poderoso: invitar a la gente a descubrir la belleza de Ascensión. No sólo para ver el edificio, sino para sentir el amor que vive aquí.

Y aquí es donde necesitamos su ayuda, sí, de toda la Familia de Ascensión.

Imprimimos unas tarjetas con la información de todos nuestros servicios de Navidad — Nochebuena, Navidad, todo… ¡Por favor llévense algunas a casa! Y no sólo una — ¡agarren varias! 😊 Pónganlas en las puertas de sus vecinos, déjenlas en los carros, entrégueselas a compañeros de trabajo, amistades o a quien Dios les ponga en el camino.

Antes, nos enfocábamos en el vecindario alrededor de la iglesia. Y está chido. Pero imaginen qué tanto podría crecer nuestra bienvenida si cada uno invitara desde su propio vecindario — Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville, Montgomery Village y más allá.

Ustedes tienen vecinos que yo quizá nunca conoceré. Pero ustedes son su puente hacia Ascensión. Ustedes son su cálida invitación.

Y no sean tímidos. No están siendo insistentes — están ofreciendo esperanza. La gente está más abierta a recibir una invitación espiritual en Navidad que en cualquier otra época del año. Una tarjetita puede ser la chispa que alguien necesita.

Tenemos muchísimas tarjetas. Tómenlas, oren sobre ellas si quieren, y compártanlas con alegría.

Nuestro Estudio Bíblico en inglés no se reunirá esta semana. Tomaremos un breve descanso por las fiestas y nos reuniremos nuevamente el lunes 5 de enero en la biblioteca. Al regresar, comenzaremos con Éxodo 16, cuando el pueblo de Israel entra al desierto y enfrenta de inmediato el hambre, el miedo y las sorprendentes maneras de Dios para proveer. Este capítulo, el del maná y las codornices, nos enseña qué significa confiar cuando el camino por delante no es claro. Es un buen capítulo para empezar el nuevo año. Espero que nos acompañe el 5 de enero mientras continuamos este caminar. Traiga sus preguntas, ideas e historias. Siempre hay un lugar para usted.

GODLY PLAY

Esta es la tercera semana de Adviento. Las lecciones de Adviento de Godly Play nos ayudan a prepararnos para el Misterio de la Navidad. Caminamos hacia Belén guiados por los profetas que señalan el camino, junto con la Sagrada Familia, los pastores y los Reyes Magos. Ascension llevará a cabo nuevamente el Árbol de Generosidad este año. NECESIDAD DE MIEMBROS DE VESTRY Y DELEGADOS A LA CONVENCIÓN

Estamos buscando tres nuevos miembros del Vestry, un delegado y un suplente para la Convención Diocesana. Servir en el Vestry es un ministerio importante: no se trata de tener todas las respuestas, sino de amar a nuestra iglesia, escuchar, orar y trabajar juntos por el bien de la comunidad. ACTIVIDAD DE REFLEXIÓN DE ADVIENTO

El Adviento comienza el 30 de noviembre. Este año, además de poner a su disposición el libro “Living Well Through Advent 2025” para su reflexión personal o familiar, durante todo el Adviento les invitaremos a colocar sus esperanzas y las promesas de Dios en una Canasta de Esperanza, la cual estará ubicada cerca de la entrada del santuario. Cada semana habrá papelitos y plumas disponibles para escribir y colocar esperanzas personales —por sanación, reconciliación, crecimiento o cualquier otra intención— dentro de la Canasta de Esperanza.Durante el Adviento, algunas de estas esperanzas serán seleccionadas al azar para leerse en voz alta durante nuestros servicios y también compartidas en nuestras redes sociales, como una afirmación de que la venida del Niño Jesús es respuesta a nuestros anhelos más profundos.Las esperanzas recolectadas durante el Adviento no desaparecerán en Navidad; serán guardadas y retomadas en diferentes momentos del año como un recordatorio de que nuestras esperanzas no terminan cuando acaba la Navidad, y de que nuestra esperanza en Cristo continúa mucho más allá de la temporada navideña.Esté pendiente de más instrucciones, pero desde ahora comience a reflexionar: ¿en qué área de su vida necesita más esperanza en este momento? También marque en su calendario el 17 de diciembre, cuando ofreceremos un mini-retiro de Adviento presencial para reflexionar juntos sobre nuestro camino durante esta temporada y nuestros sueños y esperanzas para la Navidad y más allá.
