Do Justice, Love Kindness and Walk Humbly with your God…

In reflecting on the Scripture for this week I found this writing from the Rev. G. Cole Gruberth and his words spoke to me at a time when I think we are all struggling with what is going on around us. He writes: “ It sounds so simple: do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with your God. But on closer inspection, are these instructions really so simple after all? How can we be sure we are seeking God’s justice and not our own? How are we to love kindness and not merely like niceness? How do we walk in humility without feeling humiliated?

Fortunately, we have an excellent teacher and guide: Jesus Christ. His teachings on the mountain in Galilee are some of his best-known words. The Beatitudes, the “Blesseds” are perhaps the most famous of all. When we pay attention to the future tense – “they will be comforted … they will inherit … they will be filled” – it’s easy to hear these sayings as a series of promises, of rewards to be allotted in the afterlife, or in the new creation at the end of times. Doubtless those promises will hold true in the new creation, but is that enough consolation to us now, when we mourn, or hunger, or are persecuted? As a disillusioned man in a song by Sting says of inheriting the earth, “ ‘What good is a used-up world, and how can it be worth having?’”

 …Applied well, our justice systems protect the innocent, shield the vulnerable, and ensure equity. Applied poorly, they protect the powerful and disproportionately condemn the weak. Justice in the kingdom of heaven relies on the mercy and righteousness of God. Our Baptismal Covenant calls us to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.” Our tools for this heavenly justice system are mercy and righteousness and peacemaking. If we use these tools to do justice, look at the blessings that follow – receiving mercy, being filled, being called children of God! Better yet, the blessings are not only a reward to us, but also a source of motivation and guidance. Because we have received God’s mercy, we have a model for being merciful and the desire to extend mercy. Because we have been forgiven and restored to peace with God, we are strengthened to forgive others and work for peace and reconciliation. Because we are filled with God’s spirit, we hunger and thirst more and more to see righteousness in the world.

But what about the times when it’s hard to see righteousness in the world, when we ourselves are persecuted, or when we are in mourning, or when we feel empty in our own spirit? Jesus assures us that blessings are present even in the midst of these times. Perhaps he’s even teaching us that at such moments we are most open to perceiving the grace of God. In the midst of persecution and slander, Jesus calls us to rejoice and be glad – for we are walking in the kingdom of heaven as well as in an unjust world. When we mourn, and are tossed by our natural and right emotions of grief and anger, how vivid are those moments when the presence and compassion of God break through! Walking in the kingdom of heaven means learning more and more how close God is to us when we are in need. Jesus even assures us that we have the kingdom of heaven just when we feel poorest in spirit. Just when you feel emptiest, he says, keep reaching out to the kingdom that is at hand. In other words, walk humbly with your God…. The Beatitudes call us above all to a sense of openness before God. We don’t see God until we see the face of Christ in others – we learn to do that by pursuing justice and kindness toward all people. We don’t see God until we stop trying to control, and begin learning to walk humbly in God’s presence. But when we practice doing justice and loving kindness and walking in humility, the Spirit continues to work in our hearts, purifying us. And blessed are the pure in heart, for they are seeing God. So it may never be easy, but perhaps it is simple after all. Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with your God. Walk in the kingdom of heaven, be comforted, inherit the earth, be filled with righteousness, receive mercy, see God, be God’s children, rejoice and be glad. Be blessed.” 

So as discouraging as these times are, please continue to do all of the good things that you are doing, continue to stand up and seek justice for all, we cannot give up, even when things seem impossible, know that God is walking with us.

Thanks to your overwhelming generosity the food pantry is well stocked! As needs arise we will be providing updates in this space. Please encourage anyone who has a need or knows someone who is in need to use the pantry.

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The program takes place every month; our next one is February 15, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. And please consider providing supplies, even if you can’t be there to help with the bagging. For information, contact Edith at esekasi@gmail.com

Please do not throw anything other than communion cups in the wastebaskets that are placed in the sanctuary. Remember, the wine has been consecrated — the blood of Christ— so throwing anything else into the wastebaskets is contrary to the proper handling of the sacred elements.

February 8th is Superbowl Sunday- Vote for your favorite team by bringing in a can of soup and placing it in the appropriately marked basket! Soups will be distributed between Gaithersburg HELP and the Ascension food pantry.(As always, any and all non-perishable goods are welcome donations for both destinations) Outreach thanks you for your support tackling hunger in our community!

Join us for Bible Study on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the library. Next meeting will be on February 9th and we will continue our journey through the Book of Exodus, focusing on Chapters 17 and 18. These chapters explore Israel’s struggles in the wilderness, from thirst and conflict to the arrival of Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, and invite us to reflect on themes of leadership, trust, and God’s surprising provision. All are welcome. Bring your questions, your curiosity, and your Bible or Bible App! 🙂

Staff members at Comfort Cases in Rockville are extremely grateful for all the items our parishioners donated to them over the holidays. They deeply appreciate our continued dedication to their mission to provide a special comfort case to each child entering the foster care system. The donation bin in the church hallway is available to receive your donations year-round. Here are the needed items:

• Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.

• Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XLarge (many teens need large sizes).

• Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

All items should be NEW, and tags should still be attached (when possible). Please, no holiday or religious themes. NO toiletries are needed at this time.

• share with each other what we are doing to resist the dehumanization and violence our neighbors are facing

There will be panel discussions and breakout sessions for skill-building and support. Light snacks and lunch will be served, and music and art will be offered to lift our spirits. Interpretation will be provided.

Practica la justicia, ama la misericordia y camina humildemente con Dios…

Al reflexionar sobre la Escritura de esta semana, encontré este escrito del Rvdo. G. Cole Gruberth, y sus palabras me hablaron en un momento en el que creo que todos estamos luchando con lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor. Él escribe:

“Suena tan sencillo: practicar la justicia, amar la misericordia, caminar humildemente con tu Dios. Pero al examinarlo más de cerca, ¿son realmente tan sencillas estas instrucciones? ¿Cómo podemos estar seguros de que buscamos la justicia de Dios y no la nuestra? ¿Cómo amar la misericordia y no simplemente que nos agrade la amabilidad superficial? ¿Cómo caminar con humildad sin sentirnos humillados?

Afortunadamente, tenemos un excelente maestro y guía: Jesucristo. Sus enseñanzas en la montaña de Galilea son algunas de sus palabras más conocidas. Las Bienaventuranzas, los ‘Bienaventurados’, quizá sean las más famosas de todas. Cuando ponemos atención al tiempo futuro —‘serán consolados… heredarán… serán saciados’— es fácil escuchar estas palabras como una serie de promesas, de recompensas que se recibirán en la vida después de la muerte o en la nueva creación al final de los tiempos. Sin duda, esas promesas se cumplirán en la nueva creación, pero ¿es eso suficiente consuelo para nosotros ahora, cuando lloramos, o tenemos hambre, o somos perseguidos? Como dice un hombre desilusionado en una canción de Sting sobre heredar la tierra: ‘¿De qué sirve un mundo agotado y cómo podría valer la pena tenerlo?’

…Cuando se aplican bien, nuestros sistemas de justicia protegen a los inocentes, resguardan a los vulnerables y garantizan la equidad. Cuando se aplican mal, protegen a los poderosos y condenan de manera desproporcionada a los débiles. La justicia en el reino de los cielos se apoya en la misericordia y la justicia de Dios. Nuestro Pacto Bautismal nos llama a ‘esforzarnos por la justicia y la paz entre todas las personas, y a respetar la dignidad de todo ser humano’. Nuestras herramientas para este sistema de justicia celestial son la misericordia, la justicia y la construcción de la paz. Si usamos estas herramientas para practicar la justicia, veamos las bendiciones que siguen: ¡recibir misericordia, ser saciados, ser llamados hijos e hijas de Dios! Mejor aún, las bendiciones no solo son una recompensa para nosotros, sino también una fuente de motivación y guía. Porque hemos recibido la misericordia de Dios, tenemos un modelo para ser misericordiosos y el deseo de extender misericordia. Porque hemos sido perdonados y reconciliados con Dios, somos fortalecidos para perdonar a otros y trabajar por la paz y la reconciliación. Porque estamos llenos del Espíritu de Dios, tenemos cada vez más hambre y sed de ver la justicia en el mundo.

Pero ¿qué pasa en los momentos en que es difícil ver la justicia en el mundo, cuando nosotros mismos somos perseguidos, o cuando estamos de luto, o cuando nos sentimos vacíos en nuestro propio espíritu? Jesús nos asegura que hay bendiciones presentes incluso en medio de estos tiempos. Tal vez incluso nos esté enseñando que en esos momentos estamos más abiertos a percibir la gracia de Dios. En medio de la persecución y la calumnia, Jesús nos llama a alegrarnos y regocijarnos, porque caminamos tanto en el reino de los cielos como en un mundo injusto. Cuando lloramos y somos sacudidos por nuestras emociones naturales y legítimas de dolor y enojo, ¡qué vívidos son esos momentos en los que la presencia y la compasión de Dios irrumpen! Caminar en el reino de los cielos significa aprender cada vez más cuán cerca está Dios de nosotros cuando estamos necesitados. Jesús incluso nos asegura que tenemos el reino de los cielos precisamente cuando nos sentimos más pobres de espíritu. Justo cuando te sientes más vacío, dice él, sigue extendiendo la mano hacia el reino que está cerca. En otras palabras, camina humildemente con tu Dios…

Las Bienaventuranzas nos llaman, por encima de todo, a una actitud de apertura ante Dios. No vemos a Dios hasta que vemos el rostro de Cristo en los demás; aprendemos a hacerlo al buscar la justicia y la misericordia hacia todas las personas. No vemos a Dios hasta que dejamos de intentar controlar y comenzamos a aprender a caminar humildemente en la presencia de Dios. Pero cuando practicamos la justicia, amamos la misericordia y caminamos con humildad, el Espíritu sigue obrando en nuestros corazones, purificándonos. Y bienaventurados los limpios de corazón, porque ellos verán a Dios. Así que tal vez nunca sea fácil, pero quizá sí sea sencillo después de todo. Practica la justicia, ama la misericordia, camina humildemente con tu Dios. Camina en el reino de los cielos, sé consolado, hereda la tierra, sé saciado de justicia, recibe misericordia, ve a Dios, sé hijo o hija de Dios, alégrate y regocíjate. Sé bendecido.”

Así que, por desalentadores que sean estos tiempos, por favor continúen haciendo todas las cosas buenas que están haciendo; sigan alzando la voz y buscando justicia para todos. No podemos rendirnos, aun cuando las cosas parezcan imposibles. Sepan que Dios camina con nosotros.
