Vestry Retreat Reflection – Looking Ahead Together

Last weekend we gathered as vestry not just to plan, but to pray, reflect, and listen. I was telling the Vestry members that retreats are never just about filling a calendar. They are about stepping back and asking: Where is God leading Ascension now?

We came into the room carrying gratitude for what has already taken root in this parish. We talked about tending our soil, not only spiritually, but physically and publicly. We named things like being present in the streets, participating in parades, caring for our grounds with landscaping and native plants, and sharing our space generously.

Out of that reflection came clarity about where we want to focus our energy in 2026.

First, we reaffirmed that the life of the parish is very important. Fellowship is not optional. It is formation. We talked about book talks, concerts, being present during special services and simple parish life gatherings that allow people to build real relationships. We want to create spaces where faith is not just taught, but lived and shared. Evangelism, for us, means invitation, conversations about faith, bringing a friend to church, even exploring possibilities for other services that might reach people who are not currently with us.

Pastoral care remains central. Immigration support was named clearly as part of our calling. We want to be a church that does not simply worship together but walks with people through real life. Estate and life planning conversations will continue, not just as financial tools, but as acts of stewardship and love for future generations.

Communication also surfaced as a major priority. We need clarity and integration. Updating and reformatting the newsletter. Making sure the calendar reflects real opportunities for involvement. Strengthening cross-communication between ministries. Exploring text alerts and better use of platforms like Realm. Communication is not just administrative, it is pastoral. People cannot participate in what they do not know about.

Stewardship and fundraising will continue to build on 2026. Grants remain important, especially as we look toward sustainability. We named very practical needs like the roof and facilities maintenance. Stewardship is about stability so that mission can flourish.

We also talked about outreach, how we connect with the wider community. Making sure our welcome is not abstract but tangible. Throughout the conversation, one theme kept returning: integration. We do not want isolated programs. We want alignment. Three services that feel connected. 

Ministries that communicate. Social activities that support discipleship. Formation that leads to fellowship. Fellowship that leads to mission.

What encouraged me most was the spirit in the room. Honest conversation. Practical thinking. Deep love for Ascension. A shared desire not just to maintain, but to grow wisely and intentionally.

We are stewards for a season. We left with priorities, yes. But more importantly, we left with unity. A sense that God is not finished with us. That there is energy here. That there is possibility here.

Now the real work begins… slowly, prayerfully, together.

And I want to be clear about something: this is not just vestry work. This belongs to all of us. The vestry helps discern direction and hold the bigger picture, but the life of this church happens because of you, because you show up, because you serve, because you pray, because you give, because you invite someone to sit next to you in the pew, because you care.

And I am grateful to walk this road with all of you.

On the second and fourth Mondays, we will have Bible Study. On the other Mondays, we will stay after soup and pray Compline, a quiet service to end the day in peace. Ascension clergy will be offering a Healing Eucharist Service each Wednesday at noon during Lent starting on February 25th. 

RICE-BOWL OFFERING

During Lent, our church participates in the Rice-Bowl Offering as a way to practice prayer, fasting, and generosity. Donations collected will support those in need locally or beyond our community. The Vestry is prayerfully discerning the recipient and will share more details soon. Thank you for your generosity this Lenten season.

GODLY PLAY

Lent is the Season when we prepare for Easter. These six weeks are a solemn tine, overflowing with meaning. This lesson introduces the relationship of Lent to the Mystery of Easter as well as how Easter overflows into the season of Easter. This lesson that introduces the Mystery of Easter will be followed by the lessons called the Faces of Easter during the weeks of Lent. 

BIBLE STUDY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23

Lent is coming, and as we traditionally do, we’ll begin gathering on Monday nights for soup, conversation, and Scripture. Our first Soup Monday will be February 23 at 7:00 PM in Room 1.

1. Please bring something simple to share, soup or bread, nothing fancy, just enough so we can sit at the table together and start this holy season in community. After we eat, we’ll dive into Exodus 19, the powerful moment when the people of Israel arrive at Mount Sinai. They have crossed the sea and tasted manna, and now they stand at the mountain where God will meet them and call them “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” It’s a chapter about preparation, holiness, and identity, a reminder that freedom was not the final goal; covenant is. Come hungry, for soup and for the Word. See you at 7 PM in Room 1.

Reflexión del Retiro de la Junta Parroquial – Mirando hacia adelante juntos



El fin de semana pasado nos reunimos como junta parroquial no solamente para planear, sino para orar, reflexionar y escuchar. Les decía a los miembros de la junta que los retiros nunca se tratan solo de llenar un calendario. Se tratan de dar un paso atrás y preguntarnos: ¿Hacia dónde está Dios guiando a la Ascensión en este momento?

Entramos al salón con gratitud por todo lo que ya ha echado raíces en esta parroquia. Hablamos de cuidar nuestra tierra, no solo espiritualmente, sino también físicamente y de manera pública. Mencionamos cosas como estar presentes en las calles, participar en desfiles, cuidar nuestros jardines para que se vea bonito y con plantas nativas, así como compartir nuestro espacio con generosidad.

De esa reflexión surgió claridad sobre dónde queremos enfocar nuestra energía en el 2026.

Primero, reafirmamos que la vida de la parroquia es muy importante. La convivencia no es opcional. Es formación. Hablamos de presentaciones de libros, conciertos, de estar presentes en servicios especiales y en reuniones sencillas de la vida parroquial que permiten que las personas construyan relaciones reales. Queremos crear espacios donde la fe no solo se enseñe, sino que se viva y se comparta. La evangelización, para nosotros, significa invitación, conversaciones sobre la fe, traer a un amigo a la iglesia, incluso explorar la posibilidad de otros servicios que puedan llegar a personas que actualmente no están con nosotros.

El cuidado pastoral sigue siendo central. El apoyo en temas de inmigración fue mencionado claramente como parte de nuestro llamado. Queremos ser una iglesia que no solo adore junta, sino que camine con las personas en la vida real. Las conversaciones sobre planificación de herencias y de vida continuarán, no solo como herramientas financieras, sino como actos de mayordomía y amor para las futuras generaciones.

La comunicación también surgió como una prioridad importante. Necesitamos claridad e integración. Actualizar y reformatear el boletín. Asegurarnos de que el calendario refleje oportunidades reales de participación. Fortalecer la comunicación entre ministerios. Explorar alertas por mensaje de texto y un mejor uso de plataformas como Realm. La comunicación no es solo administrativa, es pastoral. Las personas no pueden participar en aquello que no conocen.

La mayordomía y la recaudación de fondos seguirán fortaleciéndose en el 2026. Las subvenciones siguen siendo importantes, especialmente mientras buscamos sostenibilidad. También mencionamos necesidades muy prácticas como el techo y el mantenimiento de las instalaciones. La mayordomía tiene que ver con estabilidad, para que la misión pueda florecer.

También hablamos del alcance comunitario, de cómo nos conectamos con la comunidad en general. Asegurarnos de que nuestra bienvenida no sea algo abstracto, sino tangible. A lo largo de la conversación, un tema regresaba constantemente: integración. No queremos programas aislados. Queremos alineación. Tres servicios que se sientan conectados. Ministerios que se comuniquen entre sí.

Actividades sociales que apoyen el discipulado. Formación que conduzca a la convivencia. Convivencia que conduzca a la misión.

Sobre todo, nos aferramos a la visión más grande: que las futuras generaciones continúen la obra de Cristo. Todo lo que conversamos… desde el cuidado de los jardines hasta el acompañamiento, desde los sistemas de comunicación hasta las subvenciones… en última instancia tiene que ver con fidelidad.

Lo que más me animó fue el espíritu en el salón. Conversaciones honestas. Pensamiento práctico. Un amor profundo por Ascensión. Un deseo compartido no solo de mantener lo que tenemos, sino de crecer con sabiduría e intención.

Somos mayordomos por una temporada. Salimos con prioridades, sí. Pero más importante aún, salimos con unidad. Con la sensación de que Dios no ha terminado con nosotros. Que hay energía aquí. Que hay posibilidad aquí.

Ahora comienza el verdadero trabajo… despacio, con oración, juntos.

Y quiero dejar algo muy claro: esto no es solo trabajo de la junta parroquial. Esto nos pertenece a todos. La junta ayuda a discernir la dirección y a sostener la visión más amplia, pero la vida de esta iglesia sucede gracias a ustedes, porque se hacen presentes, porque sirven, porque oran, porque ofrendan, porque invitan a alguien a sentarse junto a ustedes en la banca, porque les importa.

Y estoy agradecido de caminar este camino con todos ustedes.

Durante la Cuaresma, nuestra iglesia participa en la Ofrenda del Tazón de Arroz como una manera de practicar la oración, el ayuno y la generosidad. GODLY PLAY

La Cuaresma es el tiempo en que nos preparamos para la Pascua. Estas seis semanas son un período solemne y lleno de significado. Esta lección presenta la relación entre la Cuaresma y el Misterio de la Pascua, así como la manera en que la Pascua se extiende durante el tiempo pascual. Después de esta introducción al Misterio de la Pascua, durante las semanas de Cuaresma se compartirán las lecciones llamadas “Los Rostros de la Pascua.”

Después de cenar, reflexionaremos sobre Éxodo 19, el momento poderoso en que el pueblo de Israel llega al Monte Sinaí. Han cruzado el mar y probado el maná, y ahora están ante el monte donde Dios los llama “reino de sacerdotes y nación santa”. Es un capítulo sobre preparación, santidad e identidad; un recordatorio de que la libertad no era la meta final, sino la alianza.

El Green Team se reúne el primer lunes de cada mes a las 6:30 p.m. (con opción por Zoom). Nuevos miembros son bienvenidos.
