Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On the First Sunday of Lent, the Church proclaims the account of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. Saint Matthew tells us that Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, was led into the wilderness where he fasted for forty days and forty nights. In his hunger and solitude, he faced real temptations—material comfort, power, pride, and domination. Though fully divine, Jesus was also fully human. He experienced weakness, struggle, and vulnerability. Yet in every temptation, he chose faithfulness to God.

This moment is foundational for our Lenten journey. It reminds us that Lent is not simply a season on the calendar, but a pilgrimage through the wilderness of our own lives and of our world. We, too, encounter temptations that pull us toward self-centeredness, personal advantage, and indifference. Jesus’ faithfulness inspires us toward resilience and resistance. It calls us to remain rooted in God’s vision of justice, mercy, and love.

Lent is a journey of reflection, prayer, penance, and fasting toward the Paschal Mystery. It is a turning away from self-centeredness and toward God, neighbor, and all of creation. It is a season of repentance, a change of heart, mind, and direction. It is a time of renewal, growth, and courageous commitment to God’s purpose in the world.

For this reason, our parish community offers intentional ways to walk this sacred path together. During Lent, we will gather each Monday at 7:00 p.m. in Room One for our traditional Lenten Soup Mondays—a simple meal that reminds us of humility and fellowship. On the second and fourth Mondays, we will deepen our reflection through Bible Study. On the remaining Mondays, we will stay to pray Compline, a quiet and peaceful service that entrusts the day to God’s care. Sharing soup, Scripture, and silence becomes more than an event; it becomes a lived expression of our journey away from excess and toward communion.

In addition, each Wednesday at noon beginning February 25th, our Ascension clergy will offer a Healing Eucharist Service. In this sacred space, we will bring before God our wounds, anxieties, and burdens, trusting in Christ’s restoring presence. Healing spiritual, emotional, and physical is at the heart of the Lenten call to transformation.

We also invite you to deepen your personal prayer life through our Prayer Bead Workshop on March 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Didi Smith will guide participants in the time-honored Anglican practice of praying with beads a rhythmic, meditative way to draw closer to God. In a world filled with noise and distraction, this practice offers stillness and intentional focus during this holy season.

Beyond our parish walls, we recognize that many people today are walking through their own wilderness experiences times of uncertainty, loss, anxiety, and hardship. In the face of suffering and injustice, the Christian community is called not to despair or indifference, but to faithfulness and compassion. Lent reminds us that we cannot turn inward while others struggle. Instead, we are invited to stand firm in hope, to comfort the grieving, to support those in need, and to work for justice and peace wherever God places us.



In this way, the story of Jesus’ temptation becomes more than a personal spiritual lesson; it becomes a call to solidarity. It challenges us to resist selfishness and to choose love over fear, generosity over apathy, and courage over complacency. As followers of Christ, we are strengthened to remain faithful—not only for ourselves, but for the sake of our neighbors and the world God so deeply loves.

The temptation of Jesus proclaims resilience against evil and solidarity with the vulnerable. Even in physical hunger and fragility, he resisted the lure of power for the sake of God’s creation. As we journey through Lent, may we experience that same faithfulness choosing generosity over selfishness, justice over domination, and hope over despair.

We invite you to join us in walking this holy season together around tables of soup, at the altar of healing, in circles of prayer, and in acts of compassion. May this Lent shape us into a community that reflects Christ’s steadfast love.

LENTEN SOUP MONDAYS – 7 PM IN ROOM ONE

We are now in the holy season of Lent, and as we traditionally do, we will gather on Mondays to have soup together. Join us every Monday during Lent at 7:00 PM in Room One for a simple meal and time in community. On the second and fourth Mondays, we will have Bible Study. On the other Mondays, we will stay after soup and pray Compline, a quiet service to end the day in peace. There is a sign-up sheet available. Please choose one Monday to bring a soup to share. Let’s walk Lent together.

BIBLE STUDY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23

We are now in Lent, and as we traditionally do, we’ll begin gathering on Monday nights for soup, conversation, and Scripture. Our first Soup Monday will be February 23 at 7:00PM in Room 1.

Please bring something simple to share, soup or bread, nothing fancy, just enough so we can sit at the table together and start this holy season in community. After we eat, we’ll dive into Exodus 19, the powerful moment when the people of Israel arrive at Mount Sinai. They have crossed the sea and tasted manna, and now they stand at the mountain where God will meet them and call them “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” It’s a chapter about preparation, holiness, and identity, a reminder that freedom was not the final goal; covenant is. Come hungry, for soup and for the Word. See you at 7 PM in Room 1.

HEALING EUCHARIST

Ascension clergy will be offering a Healing Eucharist Service each Wednesday at noon during Lent starting on February 25th. 

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR BETTY KNIGHT

Saturday February 28, 2026

11 a.m. There will be a memorial service on Saturday February 28 at 11 a.m. for Betty Knight, longtime member of Ascension and faithful choir member for many decades, who died on February 9, 2026. There will be reception in the Undercroft following interment of ashes in the Columbarium.

PRAYER BEAD WORKSHOP AT ASCENSION — March 7th 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to pray using Prayer Beads? Ascension’s own Didi Smith who has taught people for years how to use Prayer Beads to develop a deeper connection to God, will hold a workshop on March 7th to teach this time-honored way of praying with Anglican or Protestant prayer beads.

There will be a sign up sheet in the back of the church on Sunday and if you will not be a church and wish to sign up you can e-mail Rev. Tracey at tforfa@ascensionmd.org.

Participants will need to bring their own set of prayer beads to the workshop.

COFFEE HOUR HOSTS – We would like families to help us with Coffee Hour please. If you can host a Sunday and bring fruit or a sweet treat, we would love you to help us. Our Coffee Angels have been providing treats every month for a couple of years now. We would be great if we could share the load. They will still be there each Sunday to help make coffee and get everything set up. There is a sign up in the Narthex with a date for each Sunday. If you have a special occasion and would like to share that date, please sign up for it now. We will be including the reminders in the bulletin each week for the next week. It might be good to have two families per week, but if you would like to have a Sunday please do so. Questions?? Please see Toni or Lisa. The sign up for Coffee Hour Hosts will be on the board next to the Flower signup. We do have open Sundays to sign up for flowers also. LENT SOUP AND PRAYERS MONDAY EVENING 7:00 PM ROOM 1 We have a sign up for Monday Soup and Prayers during Lent. Please sign up if you are joining Padre for SOUP and PRAYERS. We will need one or two folks to bring soup. Spoons and bowls and napkins will be provided. Questions please see Padre.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST – A big thank you to everyone that shared pancakes on Sunday! Although we didn’t get a lot of donations for this event it was wonderful to see everyone visiting and enjoying themselves. I would like to thank the Parish Life Team for their hard work setting up, cooking and cleaning up. You are a fantastic team, there are also a couple of folks that always volunteer to help on a regular basis, so you have been now included in the Parish Life Team

RICE-BOWL OFFERING

During Lent, our church participates in the Rice-Bowl Offering as a way to practice prayer, fasting, and generosity. Donations collected will support those in need locally or beyond our community. The Vestry is prayerfully discerning the recipient and will share more details soon. Thank you for your generosity this Lenten season.

GODLY PLAY

This week’s Godly Play lessons, the Faces of Easter I and II, help children prepare for the Mystery of Easter. We move toward the Mystery by hearing the stories of Christ's journey toward the cross and resurrection. This week we focus on the face of Christ as a newborn child and the face of Christ as the One who was lost and found.

ESTA SEMANA EN ASCENSION

Primer domingo en Cuaresma

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: En el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia proclama el relato de la tentación de Jesús en el desierto. San Mateo nos dice que Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, fue llevado al desierto, donde ayunó durante cuarenta días y cuarenta noches. En medio del hambre y la soledad, enfrentó tentaciones reales: las comodidades materiales, el poder, el orgullo y la dominación. Aunque plenamente divino, Jesús también fue plenamente humano. Experimentó debilidad, lucha y vulnerabilidad. Sin embargo, en cada tentación eligió la fidelidad a Dios.

Este momento es fundamental para nuestro camino cuaresmal. Nos recuerda que la Cuaresma no es simplemente una temporada en el calendario, sino una peregrinación por el desierto de nuestra propia vida y del mundo. Nosotros también enfrentamos tentaciones que nos llevan al egoísmo, a buscar ventajas personales y a la indiferencia. La fidelidad de Jesús nos inspira a la firmeza y a la resistencia. Nos llama a permanecer arraigados en la visión de Dios de justicia, misericordia y amor.

La Cuaresma es un camino de reflexión, oración, penitencia y ayuno hacia el Misterio Pascual. Es apartarnos del egoísmo y volvernos hacia Dios, hacia el prójimo y hacia toda la creación. Es un tiempo de arrepentimiento, de cambio de corazón, de mente y de rumbo. Es una temporada de renovación, crecimiento y compromiso valiente con el propósito de Dios en el mundo.

Por esta razón, nuestra comunidad parroquial ofrece maneras intencionales de recorrer juntos este camino sagrado. Durante la Cuaresma, nos reuniremos cada lunes a las 7:00 p.m. en el Salón Uno para nuestros tradicionales Lunes de Sopa Cuaresmal: una comida sencilla que nos recuerda la humildad y la fraternidad. El segundo y cuarto lunes profundizaremos en nuestra reflexión por medio del Estudio Bíblico. Los lunes restantes nos quedaremos para orar Completas, un servicio tranquilo y en silencio que pone el día en manos del cuidado de Dios. Compartir sopa, Escritura y silencio se convierte en algo más que un evento; se vuelve una expresión viva de nuestro camino lejos del exceso y hacia la comunión.

Además, cada miércoles al mediodía, comenzando el 25 de febrero, el clero de Ascensión ofrecerá un Servicio de Eucaristía de Sanación. En este espacio sagrado presentaremos ante Dios nuestras heridas, ansiedades y cargas, confiando en la presencia restauradora de Cristo. La sanación espiritual, emocional y física está en el corazón del llamado cuaresmal a la transformación.

También les invitamos a profundizar su vida de oración personal a través de nuestro Taller de Cuentas de Oración el 7 de marzo, de 10:00 a.m. a 12:30 p.m. Didi Smith guiará a los participantes en la práctica anglicana tradicional de orar con cuentas: una forma rítmica y meditativa de acercarnos a Dios. En un mundo lleno de ruido y distracciones, esta práctica nos ofrece quietud y enfoque intencional durante esta temporada santa.

Más allá de los muros de nuestra parroquia, reconocemos que muchas personas hoy atraviesan sus propios desiertos: tiempos de incertidumbre, pérdida, ansiedad y dificultad. Ante el sufrimiento y la injusticia, la comunidad cristiana está llamada no a la desesperación ni a la indiferencia, sino a la fidelidad y a la compasión.



La Cuaresma nos recuerda que no podemos encerrarnos en nosotros mismos mientras otros sufren. Estamos llamados a mantenernos firmes en la esperanza, a consolar a quienes lloran, a apoyar a los necesitados y a trabajar por la justicia y la paz dondequiera que Dios nos coloque. Así, la historia de la tentación de Jesús se convierte en algo más que una lección espiritual personal; se transforma en un llamado a la solidaridad. Nos desafía a resistir el egoísmo y a elegir el amor sobre el miedo, la generosidad sobre la indiferencia y el valor sobre la complacencia. Como seguidores de Cristo, somos fortalecidos para permanecer fieles, no solo por nosotros mismos, sino por nuestros prójimos y por el mundo que Dios ama profundamente.

La tentación de Jesús proclama resiliencia frente al mal y solidaridad con los más vulnerables. Aun en el hambre y la fragilidad física, resistió la seducción del poder por el bien de la creación de Dios. Mientras caminamos por esta Cuaresma, que podamos vivir esa misma fidelidad, eligiendo la generosidad sobre el egoísmo, la justicia sobre la dominación y la esperanza sobre la desesperación.

Los invitamos a caminar juntos esta temporada santa: En la sopa de cuaresma, ante el altar en el servicio de sanación, en círculos de oración y en actos de compasión. Que esta Cuaresma nos forme como una comunidad que refleje el amor firme y constante de Cristo.

LUNES DE SOPA EN CUARESMA – 7:00 P.M. EN EL SALÓN UNO

Ya estamos en la santa temporada de Cuaresma y, como es nuestra tradición, nos reuniremos los lunes para compartir una sopa. Acompáñanos cada lunes durante la Cuaresma a las 7:00 p.m. en el Salón Uno para una comida sencilla y un tiempo de comunidad. El segundo y cuarto lunes tendremos Estudio Bíblico. Los demás lunes, después de la sopa, oraremos Completas, un servicio tranquilo para terminar el día en paz. Hay una hoja de inscripción disponible. Por favor, elige un lunes para traer una sopa y compartirla. Caminemos juntos esta Cuaresma.

ESTUDIO BÍBLICO – LUNES 23 DE FEBRERO

Estamos en Cuaresma y, como es nuestra tradición, comenzamos a reunirnos los lunes por la noche para compartir sopa, conversación y la Palabra. Nuestro primer Lunes de Sopa será el 23 de febrero a las 7:00 p.m. en el Salón Uno. Por favor, trae algo sencillo para compartir: sopa o pan. Nada elaborado, solo lo suficiente para sentarnos a la mesa juntos e iniciar esta temporada santa en comunidad. Después de cenar, profundizaremos en el capítulo 19 del libro del Éxodo, el momento poderoso en que el pueblo de Israel llega al Monte Sinaí. Han cruzado el mar y probado el maná, y ahora están ante la montaña donde Dios se encontrará con ellos y los llamará “un reino de sacerdotes y una nación santa”. Es un capítulo sobre preparación, santidad e identidad; un recordatorio de que la libertad no era la meta final, sino la alianza.  Ven con hambre: de sopa y de la Palabra. Nos vemos a las 7:00 p.m. en el Salón Uno.

EUCARISTÍA DE SANACIÓN

El clero de Ascensión ofrecerá una Eucaristía de Sanación cada miércoles al mediodía durante la Cuaresma, comenzando el 25 de febrero.

SERVICIO MEMORIAL POR BETTY KNIGHT

Sábado 28 de febrero de 2026 – 11:00 a.m. Se celebrará un servicio memorial por Betty Knight, miembro por muchos años de Ascensión y fiel integrante del coro durante décadas, quien falleció el 9 de febrero de 2026. Después de la inhumación de sus cenizas en el Columbarium, habrá una recepción en el Salón Parroquial.

ANFITRIONES PARA LA HORA DEL CAFÉ

OFRENDA DEL TAZON DE ARROZ

Durante la Cuaresma participamos en la Ofrenda del Plato de Arroz como práctica de oración, ayuno y generosidad. GODLY PLAY

Esta semana, las lecciones de Godly Play “Los Rostros de Pascua I y II” ayudan a los niños a prepararse para el Misterio de la Pascua. Escuchamos las historias del camino de Cristo hacia la cruz y la resurrección. Nos enfocamos en el rostro de Cristo como niño recién nacido y como Aquel que fue perdido y hallado.
