Why did Jesus have to be baptized?

This week we celebrate Jesus’ baptism as well as the baptism of two members of our church family. And I had never really pondered this before, but in doing some reading this week I was confronted with the question: Why did Jesus have to be baptized? What a great question! I found some answers in a sermon that The Reverend Erin Morey wrote:

“There are several references to being baptized into Christ’s death in the service of Holy Baptism. Was Jesus baptized into his own death, which hadn’t happened yet, when he was baptized? In a way, it seems he might have been. When Jesus was baptized, we are told, the heavens were opened to him, and the Father names Jesus as his son.

Maybe we can also look to the text of today’s reading for some clues about why Jesus needed to be baptized. If you were to read this passage in the original Greek in which it was written, you would notice something very interesting about the grammar its writer used. Throughout this gospel, the writer often uses the present tense to describe something that happened in the past. This is one such passage. So, the text doesn’t actually say, “Then Jesus came from Galilee.” It says, “Then Jesus comes from Galilee.” It doesn’t say, “Then John consented”; it says, “Then John consents.” Scholars have discussed why these passages might have been written this way. Many people think that it is so we, the readers, feel that the action is happening right in front of us, and that we are a part of it. Even when we read the English translation of this passage, we get a sense of urgency and action. Jesus tells John that it is proper to baptize him, and to “let it be so now.” And then, just as Jesus gets out of the water, suddenly the heavens open, and God’s spirit descends. The writer is telling us that something very special is happening with time… . It seems, then, that the author of this text wanted us to be able to imagine ourselves as part of Jesus’s story. We can imagine ourselves standing outside of time, participating in the action. When we read this Gospel and the narrative of Jesus’s baptism, we can think about the things we have experienced in life and fill in the gaps with things that are familiar to us.

And this makes sense, because Jesus’s baptism is part of his human life. At this point in the year, both in our culture and liturgy, we have left Christmas behind. The decorations in stores came down weeks ago, and, at church, we are in the season after Epiphany. Jesus isn’t a baby anymore. But, the power of Jesus’s human birth, the world-shattering effect of his Incarnation, remains still with us. Jesus took on our humanity in his birth and continued to share in what it meant to be human throughout his life—and even in his death. The question of why Jesus needed to be baptized also raises the question, why do we get baptized? In our Book of Common Prayer, Holy Baptism is defined as “the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children, and makes us members of Christ’s Body, the Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God.” It also tells us that the inward and spiritual grace we receive in Baptism is “union with Christ in his death and resurrection, birth into God’s family the Church, forgiveness of sins, and new life in the Holy Spirit.” Just as Jesus’s baptism signified the beginning of his participation in a new mission in the world, so too does ours. When we are baptized, we are told that we now share in Christ’s priesthood—even if we are a helpless infant. At our baptism, we are told to “confess the faith of Christ crucified” and “proclaim his resurrection,” even before we are able to speak! 

If we are anxious about the daunting prospect of sharing in Christ’s priesthood, this Gospel can remind us that baptism is a sacrament of joyful connection. In the Incarnation, Jesus shares in our humanity. And in Baptism, we share in Christ’s Body. We are connected not only to God, but to one another, as members of the household of God. And not only are we connected through Baptism, even more, we are adopted as God’s children. And we know —because this Gospel tells us—that God is a loving Father who takes pride in his Son. How lucky we are that we get to share in that love!”  So let us joyfully welcome the newly baptized and be reminded of our own connection and adoption into the household of God. Fondly, Tracey

This week in Godly Play we study Holy Baptism, the full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into the Church. For Christians, this rite is the gateway into the family of families we call the Church. We ask the children to remember or look forward to the day of their baptism by lighting candles from the light of the Christ Candle, since this is also the day they receive their “light.”

Our next meeting will be today Sunday, January 11, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Ascension Parish Hall. All students in 6th grade and up (including alumni) are welcome. We will gather as one community to celebrate, reflect, and give thanks for the life and mission of our church.

Please join the Equity and Justice Committee for a tour of The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. We will take the Metro to the Smithsonian and walk to the museum. We will meet at the Shady Grove Metro’s ticket area at 9:30 AM to arrive at the museum before 11:00 AM. People can return together or return on their own schedules. Lunch can be obtained from the “Sweet Home Café” from 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM. We have reserved timed entry tickets for this tour. ¿Por qué Jesús tuvo que ser bautizado?

Esta semana celebramos el bautismo de Jesús, así como el bautismo de dos miembros de nuestra familia parroquial. Y nunca me había detenido realmente a reflexionar sobre esto, pero al hacer algunas lecturas esta semana me encontré con la pregunta: ¿Por qué Jesús tuvo que ser bautizado? ¡Qué gran pregunta! Encontré algunas respuestas en un sermón que escribió la Reverenda Erin Morey:

“Hay varias referencias a ser bautizados en la muerte de Cristo dentro del servicio del Santo Bautismo. ¿Fue Jesús bautizado en su propia muerte —que aún no había ocurrido— cuando fue bautizado? En cierto sentido, parece que sí pudo haberlo sido. Cuando Jesús fue bautizado, se nos dice que los cielos se abrieron para él, y el Padre nombra a Jesús como su Hijo.

Tal vez también podamos mirar el texto de la lectura de hoy para encontrar algunas pistas sobre por qué Jesús necesitaba ser bautizado. Si leyeras este pasaje en el griego original en el que fue escrito, notarías algo muy interesante sobre la gramática que utiliza el autor. A lo largo de este evangelio, el escritor suele usar el tiempo presente para describir algo que ocurrió en el pasado. Este es uno de esos pasajes. Así que el texto no dice realmente: ‘Entonces Jesús vino de Galilea’. Dice: ‘Entonces Jesús viene de Galilea’. No dice: ‘Entonces Juan consintió’; dice: ‘Entonces Juan consiente’. Los estudiosos han discutido por qué estos pasajes pudieron haberse escrito de esta manera. Muchas personas piensan que es para que nosotros, los lectores, sintamos que la acción está ocurriendo justo frente a nosotros, y que somos parte de ella. Incluso cuando leemos la traducción al inglés de este pasaje, percibimos un sentido de urgencia y acción. Jesús le dice a Juan que es correcto bautizarlo, y que ‘así conviene que sea ahora’. Y luego, justo cuando Jesús sale del agua, de pronto los cielos se abren y el Espíritu de Dios desciende. El autor nos está diciendo que algo muy especial está ocurriendo con el tiempo… Parece entonces que el autor de este texto quería que pudiéramos imaginarnos como parte de la historia de Jesús. Podemos imaginarnos de pie fuera del tiempo, participando en la acción. Cuando leemos este Evangelio y el relato del bautismo de Jesús, podemos pensar en las cosas que hemos vivido en la vida y llenar los espacios con cosas que nos resultan familiares.

Y esto tiene sentido, porque el bautismo de Jesús es parte de su vida humana. En este punto del año, tanto en nuestra cultura como en nuestra liturgia, ya hemos dejado atrás la Navidad. Las decoraciones en las tiendas se quitaron hace semanas, y en la iglesia estamos en el tiempo después de la Epifanía. Jesús ya no es un bebé. Pero el poder de su nacimiento humano, el efecto que sacudió al mundo con su Encarnación, todavía permanece con nosotros. Jesús asumió nuestra humanidad en su nacimiento y continuó compartiendo lo que significa ser humano a lo largo de su vida —e incluso en su muerte—. La pregunta de por qué Jesús necesitaba ser bautizado también plantea otra pregunta: ¿por qué nosotros nos bautizamos? En nuestro Libro de Oración Común, el Santo Bautismo se define como ‘el sacramento por el cual Dios nos adopta como sus hijos y nos hace miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, y herederos del reino de Dios’. También nos dice que la gracia interior y espiritual que recibimos en el Bautismo es ‘la unión con Cristo en su muerte y resurrección, el nacimiento a la familia de Dios que es la Iglesia, el perdón de los pecados y la nueva vida en el Espíritu Santo’. Así como el bautismo de Jesús señaló el comienzo de su participación en una nueva misión en el mundo, así también lo hace el nuestro. Cuando somos bautizados, se nos dice que ahora compartimos el sacerdocio de Cristo —aunque seamos un bebé indefenso—. En nuestro bautismo, se nos pide ‘confesar la fe de Cristo crucificado’ y ‘proclamar su resurrección’, ¡incluso antes de que podamos hablar!

Si nos sentimos ansiosos ante la abrumadora perspectiva de compartir el sacerdocio de Cristo, este Evangelio puede recordarnos que el bautismo es un sacramento de conexión gozosa. En la Encarnación, Jesús comparte nuestra humanidad. Y en el Bautismo, nosotros compartimos el Cuerpo de Cristo. Estamos conectados no solo con Dios, sino unos con otros, como miembros de la familia de Dios. Y no solo estamos conectados por medio del Bautismo; aún más, somos adoptados como hijos de Dios. Y sabemos —porque este Evangelio nos lo dice— que Dios es un Padre amoroso que se enorgullece de su Hijo. ¡Qué afortunados somos de poder compartir ese amor!”

Así que, con alegría, demos la bienvenida a los recién bautizados y recordemos nuestra propia conexión y adopción en la familia de Dios.

Esta semana, en Godly Play, estudiamos el Santo Bautismo, la iniciación plena por medio del agua y del Espíritu Santo en la Iglesia. Para los cristianos, este rito es la puerta de entrada a la familia de familias que llamamos la Iglesia. Pedimos a los niños que recuerden o esperen con ilusión el día de su bautismo encendiendo velas a partir de la luz de la Vela de Cristo, ya que ese es también el día en que reciben su “luz”.

Nuestra próxima reunión será hoy, domingo 11 de enero, de 6:00 a 8:00 p.m. en el Salón Parroquial de Ascension. Todos los estudiantes de 6.º grado en adelante (incluidos exalumnos) están invitados. ¡Vengan por comida, fe y diversión!

Acompañe al Comité de Equidad y Justicia en un recorrido por el Museo Nacional de Historia y Cultura Afroamericana en Washington, D. C. Tomaremos el Metro hasta la estación Smithsonian y caminaremos hasta el museo. Nos reuniremos en el área de boletos del Metro Shady Grove a las 9:30 a. m. para llegar al museo antes de las 11:00 a. m.

Las personas pueden regresar juntas o hacerlo por su cuenta según su propio horario. El almuerzo se puede comprar en el “Sweet Home Café” de 11:00 a. m. a 2:30 p. m. Ya hemos reservado boletos de entrada con horario asignado para este recorrido.
