Looking for God in our Anger and Grief

Last week the Rev. Allison Burns-LaGreca who is an Episcopal Priest and Spiritual Director wrote the following on social media. I shared it with the Padre and I want to share it with you as it is a powerful witness to how one person is navigating with faith through her own anger and grief. I hope that you find some direction in her words and can hold onto her conclusion that God has not abandoned us and is still at work. Fondly, Tracey

“I did not plan to lose my composure.

I was sitting in my living room, the television on, the day unfolding when suddenly my body reacted before my theology could catch up. I found myself yelling and cursing at the screen as lies were spoken plainly, confidently, without shame. I felt it in my chest, that tightening, that heat, that sense of being gaslit in real time. And then I watched Renee Good’s wife weep, and I came undone.

That moment broke me! It broke something open in me.

Her tears were not political. They were human. They were the kind of tears that tell the truth when words have been twisted beyond recognition. Power wants suffering to stay abstract. Policy. Rhetoric. Talking points. But grief refuses abstraction. Grief names what is real. Watching her weep, I felt the lie collapse, at least for a moment.

And I find myself asking with a growing ache, what is wrong with us that this continues? What has happened to our people?

The honest answer is not simple, but it is faithful. We are living with the consequences of a long spiritual erosion. Fear has been preached more faithfully than love. Loyalty has replaced conscience. Comfort has been chosen over truth. Somewhere along the way, cruelty began to masquerade as strength, and too many baptized it without question.

What I feel this day is not a failure of faith. It is faith refusing to go numb.

There is a moment in the Gospels when Jesus looks at the crowd and is grieved by the hardness of their hearts. Not angry first. Grieved. That grief lives in me now. It lives in many of us who are watching schools close, communities fracture, and violence be normalized while those in power insist this is order, this is safety, this is necessary.

It is not.

Anger, when rooted in love, is not the opposite of faith. It is often love’s last defense. Jesus overturned tables not because he lost control, but because he was fully present to what was being harmed. The tears I witnessed, the anger I felt, the ache that lingered, these are not signs of spiritual weakness. They are signs of a conscience that is still alive.

And yet, we cannot live on outrage alone.

We are called to tend our souls even as we tell the truth. To rest, to pray, to breathe, to weep when we need to weep. Rage without rest becomes despair. Grief without God becomes paralysis. Even Jesus withdrew when the world pressed too hard.

I am learning that faith in this moment looks like staying tender in a culture that rewards hardness. It looks like naming lies without becoming consumed by them. It looks like centering the weeping rather than the powerful. It looks like forming communities that remember our Baptismal Covenant, to respect the dignity of every human being, even when the world mocks that promise.

Nothing is wrong with you if you feel overwhelmed. Something is wrong when we stop feeling at all.

So I will stay awake. I will stay honest. I will stay rooted in the God who hears the cries of the suffering and who does not abandon the brokenhearted. Empire never gets the final word. Love does.

And I will keep trusting that even in this unraveling, God is still at work, shaping truth out of tears, and courage out of grief.

We are currently reading The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels. On January 21, we will be discussing Chapter 2. Looking ahead, our next book will be People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.

Join us every Monday at 7:00 PM for Bible Study in the Library. We gather to read Scripture, share reflections, and grow together in faith and fellowship. Whether you are new to Bible study or have been coming for years, there is always room for you. All are welcome!

Thanks to your overwhelming generosity the food pantry is well stocked! As needs arise we will be providing updates in this space. Please encourage anyone who has a need or knows someone who is in need to use the pantry.

Due due to the Candidate's Forum Sunday Jan.18th and the Annual Meeting Sunday, Jan. 25. We will not be having class at 11;30-12 noon.. A Joyful Path will resume February 1,2026.

This week in Godly Play we study the Parable of the Great Pearl from the Gospel of Matthew (13:45). In this Parable Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a merchant who goes in search for the great pearl, and exchanges everything for the great pearl when it is found. The children and teachers will explore questions about the parable after hearing the story.

Our next meeting will be today Sunday, January 25, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Ascension Parish Hall. All students in 6th grade and up (including alumni) are welcome. Please join the Equity and Justice Committee for a tour of The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. We will take the Metro to the Smithsonian and walk to the museum. We will meet at the Shady Grove Metro’s ticket area at 9:30 AM to arrive at the museum before 11:00 AM. People can return together or return on their own schedules. Lunch can be obtained from the “Sweet Home Café” from 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM. We have reserved timed entry tickets for this tour. LEARN, ACT, RESIST

February 21 @ San Mateo | 9 AM - 2 PM

Join others from across the Diocese to deepen your understanding of how we can faithfully stand with our migrant neighbors. Learn about ongoing efforts to meet basic needs, offer solidarity in times of vulnerability, and publicly proclaim the dignity and value of migrant communities. Participants will share with others, hear from congregations leading this work, and prepare for future actions to resist the dehumanization and violence our neighbors are facing. The agenda includes panel discussions, breakout sessions for skill-building, support, music, art and lunch.

Please do not throw anything other than communion cups in the wastebaskets that are placed in the sanctuary. Remember, the wine has been consecrated — the blood of Christ— so throwing anything else into the wastebaskets is contrary to the proper handling of the sacred elements

Staff members at Comfort Cases in Rockville are extremely grateful for all the items our parishioners donated to them over the holidays. They deeply appreciate our continued dedication to their mission to provide a special comfort case to each child entering the foster care system. The donation bin in the church hallway is available to receive your donations year-round. Here are the needed items:

• Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.
• Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XLarge (many teens need large sizes).
• Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

All items should be NEW, and tags should still be attached (when possible). Please, no holiday or religious themes. NO toiletries are needed at this time.

Some donated items did not fit the specifications above, so we distributed them to other community organizations. Rest assured that all items found a home where they were needed. Questions? Email the Ascension Equity & Justice Committee at ascensionAEJC@gmail.com.

Buscando a Dios en nuestro enojo y nuestro dolor

La semana pasada, la Rda. Allison Burns-LaGreca, quien es sacerdotisa episcopal y directora espiritual, escribió lo siguiente en redes sociales. Lo compartí con el Padre y quiero compartirlo también con ustedes, porque es un testimonio poderoso de cómo una persona está caminando con fe a través de su propio enojo y dolor. “No planeé perder la compostura.

Estaba sentada en mi sala, con la televisión encendida, dejando que el día transcurriera, cuando de pronto mi cuerpo reaccionó antes de que mi teología pudiera alcanzarlo. Me encontré gritando y diciendo groserías a la pantalla mientras se decían mentiras de manera clara, segura, sin vergüenza. Lo sentí en el pecho: esa opresión, ese calor, esa sensación de estar siendo manipulada en tiempo real. Y luego vi llorar a la esposa de Renee Good, y me desmoroné.

¡Ese momento me rompió! Me rompió y, al mismo tiempo, abrió algo dentro de mí.

Sus lágrimas no eran políticas. Eran humanas. Eran el tipo de lágrimas que dicen la verdad cuando las palabras han sido torcidas hasta perder su sentido. El poder quiere que el sufrimiento permanezca abstracto: política pública, retórica, puntos de discusión. Pero el dolor se niega a ser abstracto. El dolor nombra lo que es real. Al verla llorar, sentí que la mentira se derrumbaba, al menos por un momento.

Y me descubro preguntando, con un dolor cada vez más profundo: ¿qué nos pasa para que esto continúe? ¿Qué le ha sucedido a nuestro pueblo?

La respuesta honesta no es simple, pero es fiel. Estamos viviendo las consecuencias de una larga erosión espiritual. El miedo se ha predicado con más fidelidad que el amor. La lealtad ha reemplazado a la conciencia. Se ha elegido la comodidad en lugar de la verdad. En algún punto del camino, la crueldad empezó a disfrazarse de fortaleza, y demasiados la bendijeron sin cuestionarla.

Lo que siento hoy no es un fracaso de la fe. Es la fe negándose a volverse insensible.

Hay un momento en los Evangelios en el que Jesús mira a la multitud y se entristece por la dureza de sus corazones. No se enoja primero. Se duele. Ese dolor vive ahora en mí. Vive en muchos de nosotros que vemos cerrar escuelas, fracturarse comunidades y normalizarse la violencia, mientras quienes están en el poder insisten en que esto es orden, esto es seguridad, esto es necesario.

No lo es.

El enojo, cuando está enraizado en el amor, no es lo opuesto a la fe. A menudo es la última defensa del amor. Jesús volcó las mesas no porque perdiera el control, sino porque estaba plenamente presente ante lo que estaba siendo dañado. Las lágrimas que presencié, el enojo que sentí, el dolor que permaneció: no son señales de debilidad espiritual. Son señales de una conciencia que sigue viva.

Y, sin embargo, no podemos vivir solo de la indignación.

Estamos llamados a cuidar nuestras almas aun mientras decimos la verdad. A descansar, a orar, a respirar, a llorar cuando necesitamos llorar. La rabia sin descanso se convierte en desesperación. El dolor sin Dios se convierte en parálisis. Incluso Jesús se retiraba cuando el mundo presionaba demasiado.

Estoy aprendiendo que la fe en este momento se ve como permanecer sensibles en una cultura que recompensa la dureza. Se ve como nombrar las mentiras sin dejarnos consumir por ellas. Se ve como centrar a quienes lloran y no a quienes tienen poder. Se ve como formar comunidades que recuerdan nuestro Pacto Bautismal: respetar la dignidad de todo ser humano, incluso cuando el mundo se burla de esa promesa.

No hay nada malo en ti si te sientes abrumado. Algo está mal cuando dejamos de sentir por completo.

Así que permaneceré despierta. Permaneceré honesta. Permaneceré arraigada en el Dios que escucha el clamor de quienes sufren y que no abandona a los de corazón quebrantado. El imperio nunca tiene la última palabra. El amor sí.

Y seguiré confiando en que, incluso en medio de este desmoronamiento, Dios sigue obrando, dando forma a la verdad a partir de las lágrimas y al valor a partir del dolor.”

En esta parábola, Jesús compara el Reino de los Cielos con un comerciante que sale en busca de la gran perla y lo vende todo cuando la encuentra. Los niños y las maestras explorarán preguntas sobre la parábola después de escuchar la historia.

Los miembros del personal de Comfort Cases en Rockville están sumamente agradecidos por todos los artículos que nuestros feligreses donaron durante las fiestas. Aprecian profundamente nuestra dedicación continua a su misión de proporcionar un “comfort case” especial a cada niño que entra al sistema de cuidado temporal. El contenedor de donaciones en el pasillo de la iglesia está disponible para recibir sus aportaciones durante todo el año. Aquí están los artículos que se necesitan:

• Cobijas (¡se aceptan hechas a mano!) no mayores de 30” x 40”. Deben ser lo suficientemente delgadas para caber fácilmente en una mochila junto con otros artículos.

• Pijamas, o camisetas y pantalones de pijama — tallas desde bebé hasta adulto X-Large (muchos adolescentes necesitan tallas grandes).

• Peluches no mayores de 11” de altura.

Todos los artículos deben ser NUEVOS, y las etiquetas deben seguir adheridas (cuando sea posible). Por favor, no enviar temas navideños o religiosos. NO se necesitan artículos de tocador en este momento.
