Dear Ascension Friends:

I wanted to share with you some thoughts after I attended a recent Montgomery County Council meeting where the Council heard testimony for and against the Trust Act. The Trust Act, if passed, would enshrine into law an executive order from several years ago that makes it clear that our county police officers will not assist ICE. 

According to the CASA Website — CASA is an organization devoted to helping immigrants in a variety of ways (https://wearecasa.org) — the Trust Act would prevent law enforcement from inquiring about immigration status, detaining people on behalf of ICE, and notifying or transferring to ICE. It would protect immigrants from ICE in sensitive locations such as schools, courthouses, and hospitals.  

One of the main benefits of this, if passed into law, would be that there would be more trust in our police. When there is more trust, people will be more willing to report crime.  People will more likely see the police as a source of help, not an agency to fear.  

The testimony presented at the meeting was jarring. There was an educator who broke down in tears while talking about the trauma she has witnessed in families impacted by ICE right here in Montgomery County.  High school students, including two ninth graders, were eloquent in describing how fear of ICE and dealing with the aftermath of ICE having detained family members affects them as students.  Kids have to assume adult responsibilities in the event a parent is removed.  Some people fear going to the grocery store.  Families can be put in economic peril if a working parent is removed by ICE.

One of my take aways from the meeting was this is not about politics. It is about living what we are taught by Jesus. Welcome the stranger. Love one another.  It is about how members of our own community are being affected by the presence of ICE. Families and children are being traumatized.  People in our community are being thrown into economic insecurity. 



This can leave us all feeling helpless. What can we do?  Some communities are escorting children to school if their parents are fearful of going out. Shopping or cooking for families who are afraid to leave their homes is something we can do. Supporting legislation that is protective of immigrant families is an option.  You can also contact the Maryland Immigrants Rights Coalition

(marylandimmigrantrightscoalition.org) for opportunities to get involved. In our own community, Padre has contacts and may know of ways we can help Ascension families affected by ICE. And as we work to help, we can continue to pray for God’s help and guidance.

Join us for Bible Study on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the library. Next meeting will be on February 9th and we will continue our journey through the Book of Exodus, focusing on Chapters 17 and 18. These chapters explore Israel’s struggles in the wilderness, from thirst and conflict to the arrival of Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, and invite us to reflect on themes of leadership, trust, and God’s surprising provision. All are welcome. Bring your questions, your curiosity, and your Bible or Bible App! 🙂

Thanks to your overwhelming generosity the food pantry is well stocked! As needs arise we will be providing updates in this space. Please encourage anyone who has a need or knows someone who is in need to use the pantry.

The Men’s Shelter lunch program provides bagged lunches for homeless men. Lunches are assembled in the Parish Hall once a month. Generous Ascension members donate the supplies. Depending on the season, we provide 40 to 80 lunches each month. The program takes place every month; our next one is February 15, at 9:00 a.m. Come to the Undercroft and help make the sandwiches and bagged lunches. Join others from across the Diocese to deepen your understanding of how we can faithfully stand with our migrant neighbors. Learn about ongoing efforts to meet basic needs, offer solidarity in times of vulnerability, and publicly proclaim the dignity and value of migrant communities. Participants will share with others, hear from congregations leading this work, and prepare for future actions to resist the dehumanization and violence our neighbors are facing. The agenda includes panel discussions, breakout sessions for skill-building, support, music, art and lunch.

Please do not throw anything other than communion cups in the wastebaskets that are placed in the sanctuary. Remember, the wine has been consecrated — the blood of Christ— so throwing anything else into the wastebaskets is contrary to the proper handling of the sacred elements.

Staff members at Comfort Cases in Rockville are extremely grateful for all the items our parishioners donated to them over the holidays. They deeply appreciate our continued dedication to their mission to provide a special comfort case to each child entering the foster care system. The donation bin in the church hallway is available to receive your donations year-round. Here are the needed items:

• Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.

• Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XLarge (many teens need large sizes).

• Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

All items should be NEW, and tags should still be attached (when possible). Please, no holiday or religious themes. NO toiletries are needed at this time.

Queridos amigos de Ascension:

Quería compartir con ustedes algunas reflexiones después de haber asistido recientemente a una reunión del Consejo del Condado de Montgomery, donde el Consejo escuchó testimonios a favor y en contra de la Ley de Confianza (Trust Act). Esta ley, de aprobarse, convertiría en ley una orden ejecutiva emitida hace varios años que deja claro que la policía de nuestro condado no colaborará con ICE.

Según el sitio web de CASA — CASA es una organización dedicada a apoyar a los inmigrantes de diversas maneras (https://wearecasa.org

) — la Ley de Confianza impediría que las autoridades pregunten sobre el estatus migratorio, detengan a personas en nombre de ICE, o notifiquen o transfieran personas a ICE. También protegería a los inmigrantes de la presencia de ICE en lugares sensibles como escuelas, juzgados y hospitales.

Uno de los principales beneficios de esta ley, si se aprueba, sería un mayor nivel de confianza en nuestra policía. Cuando hay más confianza, las personas están más dispuestas a reportar delitos. Es más probable que la gente vea a la policía como una fuente de ayuda y no como una agencia a la que se le debe tener miedo.

Los testimonios presentados en la reunión fueron impactantes. Hubo una educadora que rompió en llanto al hablar del trauma que ha presenciado en familias afectadas por ICE aquí mismo, en el Condado de Montgomery. Estudiantes de preparatoria, incluidos dos de noveno grado, expresaron con mucha claridad cómo el miedo a ICE y las consecuencias de que ICE haya detenido a familiares los afecta como estudiantes. Los niños y jóvenes tienen que asumir responsabilidades de adultos cuando uno de sus padres es deportado. Algunas personas tienen miedo incluso de ir al supermercado. Las familias pueden quedar en una situación económica muy difícil si un padre o madre que trabaja es detenido por ICE.

Una de las conclusiones que me llevé de esta reunión es que esto no se trata de política. Se trata de vivir lo que Jesús nos enseñó: acoger al extranjero y amarnos los unos a los otros. Se trata de cómo la presencia de ICE está afectando a miembros de nuestra propia comunidad. Familias y niños están siendo traumatizados. Personas de nuestra comunidad están siendo empujadas a la inseguridad económica.

Todo esto puede hacernos sentir impotentes. ¿Qué podemos hacer? Algunas comunidades están acompañando a los niños a la escuela cuando sus padres tienen miedo de salir. Hacer compras o cocinar para familias que tienen temor de salir de sus casas es algo que podemos hacer. Apoyar leyes que protejan a las familias inmigrantes es otra opción. También pueden comunicarse con la Coalición de Derechos de los Inmigrantes de Maryland (marylandimmigrantrightscoalition.org) para conocer oportunidades de involucrarse. En nuestra propia comunidad, el Padre tiene contactos y puede conocer maneras de ayudar a las familias de Ascension afectadas por ICE. Y mientras trabajamos para ayudar, podemos seguir orando por la ayuda y la guía de Dios.

El programa de almuerzos del Refugio para Hombres proporciona almuerzos en bolsa para hombres sin hogar. Los almuerzos se preparan en el Salón Parroquial una vez al mes. Generosos miembros de Ascension donan los insumos. Según la temporada, proporcionamos entre 40 y 80 almuerzos cada mes. La agenda incluye paneles de diálogo, sesiones en grupos pequeños para el desarrollo de habilidades y apoyo, música, arte y almuerzo.
