EPIPHANY IS OBSERVED ON JANUARY 6. WHAT IS EPIPHANY AND WHAT DOES IT CELEBRATE?



Epiphany is a feast celebrating the revelation of Jesus Christ to the world. The word “epiphany” comes from the Greek epiphaneia, meaning appearance or manifestation. Epiphany observes the time when Jesus was made known as God’s Son, specifically to the Gentiles. Christians use the day to celebrate how Jesus came not just for Israel but for all nations. Christians observe Epiphany to honor God’s faithfulness in revealing Christ to the world. The wise men followed a celestial phenomenon, a star, which God used to lead them to Jesus. Their gifts symbolized Jesus’ kingship, priesthood, and sacrifice. These gifts remind us that Jesus came to bring salvation to all people. 

What Are the Origins and History of Epiphany? 

Epiphany traces back to the early Church during the second and third centuries. The first Christians were primarily Jewish, and they had their own holidays and feasts, often redefining them when they came to Christ, seeing them in light of the Messiah. By the beginning of the second century, most Christians were Gentiles, and they started to develop their own traditions and holidays along with and separate from the Jewish background. By the fourth century, the Church started to develop its liturgical calendar, in which the celebration of Jesus’ birth happened on December 25 and Epiphany celebrated the observance of the Magi searching for and finding Jesus.

Epiphany became one of the earliest Christian feast days, along with Easter and Pentecost. The Church’s celebration on January 6 countered other popular pagan festivals associated with the winter solstice. Over time, like Christmas, Epiphany symbolized Jesus as the true Light breaking into the darkness of the world. In the Middle Ages, Epiphany grew in significance. Medieval Christians would hold pageants or plays to reenact the wise men and their visit. They created customs like the “King Cake” and home blessings, which still continue today.

How Do Different Denominations Celebrate Epiphany?

While many celebrate Epiphany, the expressions are diverse and varied. The Roman Catholic Church observes Epiphany as a major feast day on January 6. Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Epiphany on January 6 or 19, depending on whether they use the Gregorian or Julian calendar. Anglicans, Methodists, Lutherans, and similar liturgical Protestant denominations come from the Catholic tradition, so they observe Epiphany with worship services that focus on the Magi’s visit, working in the wider theme of Christ being revealed to the nations. Latin America and Spanish cultures developed Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings’ Day) as a feast day, especially for kids who receive gifts in honor of the Magi’s offerings. Families bake and share “Rosca de Reyes,” a sweet bread with a hidden figure representing the baby Jesus. 

What Does Epiphany Mean for Christians Today? 

Essentially, we can only know God through his self-revelation to us. The Fall of Adam and Eve, bringing in the sin nature, making our hearts rebellious, resulted in a gap between humanity and God that we couldn’t bridge or cross. Only God could. And in his mercy and love, he did. The Lord Jesus Christ, his Son, becomes the greatest revelation of God to the world.

Epiphany calls us to worship God for his revelatory work, share in the witness, and wait for his future glory. Christ has come, is present through his Spirit, and will come again.

We will gather again on Monday, January 5 in the Library. When we return, we will jump into Exodus 16, the moment when the people of Israel step into the wilderness and immediately start wrestling with hunger, fear, and God’s surprising ways of providing. This is the chapter of manna and quail, of daily bread that teaches them (and honestly, teaches us) what trust looks like when the road ahead isn’t clear. It’s a good chapter for a new year. I hope you’ll join me on January 5 as we continue the journey. Bring your questions, your insights, and your stories. There’s always room for you.

Thanks to your overwhelming generosity the food pantry is well stocked! As needs arise we will be providing updates in this space. Please encourage anyone who has a need or knows someone who is in need to use the pantry.

As we continue walking together in faith, I invite you to consider serving in leadership here at Ascension. This year, we are looking for three new Vestry members, one delegate to Diocesan Convention, and one alternate. Serving on the Vestry is an important ministry. It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about caring deeply for our church and being willing to listen, pray, and work together for the good of our community. Vestry members help guide the direction of our parish, make decisions about our ministries and resources, and support our mission to be a place where all are welcome and loved. The Convention delegate and alternate have the privilege of representing our congregation at the Diocesan Convention. They join with other Episcopal churches in prayer, conversation, and discernment about how we live out our common mission in the wider church. If you feel called to serve or if you know someone whose gifts would bless our leadership, please talk with me, Betsy, Fredis or Marcia. Please join the Equity and Justice Committee for a tour of The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. We will take the Metro to the Smithsonian and walk to the museum. We will meet at the Shady Grove Metro’s ticket area at 9:30 AM to arrive at the museum before 11:00 AM. People can return together or return on their own schedules. Lunch can be obtained from the “Sweet Home Café” from 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM. We have reserved timed entry tickets for this tour. Over 700 children enter the foster care system every single day. Most are given a trash bag to carry their belongings.... These children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter. Many do not own a toothbrush or have a pair of pajamas. At Comfort Cases, we believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their very own. —Comfort Cases, Rockville, Maryland (comfortcases.org)

The season of giving is upon us, and once again Comfort Cases in Rockville needs our help for children entering foster care. Please place items for donation in the bin in the hallway between Rooms 4 & 5. Here are the needed items: 

1.TOP PRIORITY: Pajamas, or T-shirts and pajama bottoms—sizes infant through Adult XLarge (larger sizes are particularly welcome, as many teens need them).

2.Blankets (handmade ones are welcome!) no larger than 30” X 40”. They should be thin enough to fit easily in a backpack with other items.

3.Stuffed animals no larger than 11” tall.

NOTE: All items must be NEW, and tags must still be attached (when possible). Please, NO holiday or religious themes. NO toiletries are needed at this time. The Comfort Cases staff are extremely grateful for all our donations! They have thanked us heartily for the many bins of donated items we have brought them throughout the years. Questions? LA EPIFANÍA SE OBSERVA EL 6 DE ENERO. ¿QUÉ ES LA EPIFANÍA Y QUÉ CELEBRA?


La Epifanía es una fiesta que celebra la revelación de Jesucristo al mundo. La palabra “epifanía” proviene del griego epiphaneia, que significa aparición o manifestación. La Epifanía recuerda el momento en que Jesús fue dado a conocer como el Hijo de Dios, específicamente a los gentiles. Los cristianos utilizan este día para celebrar que Jesús vino no solo para Israel, sino para todas las naciones. Los cristianos observan la Epifanía para honrar la fidelidad de Dios al revelar a Cristo al mundo.

Los sabios siguieron un fenómeno celestial, una estrella, que Dios utilizó para guiarlos hasta Jesús. Sus regalos simbolizaban la realeza, el sacerdocio y el sacrificio de Jesús. Estos dones nos recuerdan que Jesús vino para traer salvación a todas las personas.

La caída de Adán y Eva introdujo la naturaleza del pecado, endureciendo nuestros corazones y creando una separación entre la humanidad y Dios que nosotros no podíamos salvar ni cruzar. Solo Dios podía hacerlo, y en su misericordia y amor, lo hizo. El Señor Jesucristo, su Hijo, se convierte en la mayor revelación de Dios al mundo.

La Epifanía nos llama a adorar a Dios por su obra reveladora, a compartir el testimonio y a esperar su gloria futura. Cristo ha venido, está presente por medio de su Espíritu y vendrá otra vez.

Acompañe al Comité de Equidad y Justicia en un recorrido por el Museo Nacional de Historia y Cultura Afroamericana en Washington, D. C. Tomaremos el Metro hasta la estación Smithsonian y caminaremos hasta el museo. Nos reuniremos en el área de boletos del Metro Shady Grove a las 9:30 a. m. para llegar al museo antes de las 11:00 a. m.

Las personas pueden regresar juntas o hacerlo por su cuenta según su propio horario. El almuerzo se puede comprar en el “Sweet Home Café” de 11:00 a. m. a 2:30 p. m. Ya hemos reservado boletos de entrada con horario asignado para este recorrido.

A muchos se les entrega una bolsa de basura para llevar sus pertenencias… Estos niños han sufrido abandono y con frecuencia sienten que no importan. Muchos no tienen ni un cepillo de dientes ni un par de pijamas. En Comfort Cases creemos que cada niño merece sentir dignidad. Cada niño merece guardar sus pertenencias en una bolsa especial que pueda llamar suya.
