A few days ago, I was doing what many of us probably do more often than we should... scrolling through Facebook. I came across a post from another Episcopal priest announcing a new class at his church. The title immediately caught my attention: What Does It Mean to Be an Anglican?

I thought, "That's a great class!" But then another thought popped into my head: How much do we really know about our own church? We come to church every Sunday. We pray together, receive Communion, and celebrate the different seasons of the Church year. But how often do we stop and ask why we do what we do?

Then my mind wandered a little further, and I realized there's an even more important question. How much do we really know about Jesus?

It's possible to know a lot about the Episcopal Church, Anglican history, liturgy, and traditions but if we don't know Jesus, we've missed the whole point. The best place to get to know him isn't Facebook, YouTube, or even your favorite priest's sermon (yes, that includes mine! 😊). It's the Bible.

Don't get me wrong. I love a good podcast, a great Bible study, or a thoughtful book about Christianity. Those are wonderful tools. But nothing replaces opening the Bible yourself and allowing God to speak to you through them.

As Episcopalians, we often talk about Scripture, Tradition, and Reason. They all work together, but everything begins with Scripture. It is there that we meet the God who has been walking with humanity from the very beginning. It is there that we discover who Jesus is, what he taught, how he loved, and what it means to follow him today.

I also know life is busy. Between work, family, appointments, kids' activities, grocery shopping, and trying to remember where you left your car keys, finding time to sit down and read the Bible isn't always easy.

That's one of the reasons we offer Bible studies at Ascension. They give us a chance to ask questions, wrestle with difficult passages, laugh together, learn from one another, and sometimes even say, "Wait... I've never noticed that before."

Some of my favorite moments in Bible study happen when someone asks a question, I had never even considered. That's the beauty of reading the Bible together. We all bring different experiences, different perspectives, and different questions. We help each other grow.

But if you can't make it to Bible study, don't let that be the reason your Bible stays on the shelf collecting dust. Read a chapter before going to bed. Read the Gospel for the coming Sunday. Read with your spouse, your children, a friend, or even your morning cup of coffee. You don't have to understand everything the first time you read it. Just begin. God has a wonderful way of meeting us exactly where we are.

August is traditionally known as the Month of the Bible, and we are only a few weeks away. Maybe this is the perfect time to start thinking about how you'd like to celebrate it.

Perhaps you'll decide to read one Gospel from beginning to end. Maybe you'll join one of our Bible studies. Maybe you'll invite a couple of friends over once a week, make some coffee, open the Bible, and simply see where the conversation leads.

Whatever you choose, I hope you'll make room for God's Word in your daily life. And every time we open the Scriptures with an open heart, we give God another opportunity to surprise us, challenge us, encourage us, and slowly shape us into the people he created us to be.

Who knows? Maybe the next time you're scrolling through Facebook, instead of spending another twenty minutes watching funny cat videos, you'll think, "Maybe it's time to open my Bible instead."

BACKPACKS FOR LINKAGES TO LEARNING

It's that time of year again! As a church, we have the opportunity to help students at Summit Hall Elementary School start the new school year with the supplies they need to succeed. We are once again collecting school supplies for the Linkages to Learning program, which serves children and families in our community. If you're able to help, please pick up a supply list in the narthex or visit the Ascension website. Don't feel like you have to buy everything on the list, every notebook, box of crayons, pencil, or backpack makes a difference. Simply give what you can. Please bring your donations to church by Sunday, August 16. Thank you for helping us share God's love.

This week, we are very excited to welcome Ascension’s new Parish Administrator. Solange, pronounced “So-longe,” comes to Ascension after a career in government working for the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). She brings many skills to her new position and we are very happy that she has joined the Ascension team. Solange has lived all over the world. She was born in Germany, and has lived in France, Chad and spent a year in Afghanistan working for SIGAR. In her free time she likes to go to the gym, teach swimming to kids, listen to music and watch British mysteries. In addition to welcoming Solange, the rest of the Ascension staff would like to give a giant THANK YOU to all the wonderful volunteers who have staffed the office during the transition period and have kept the office running smoothly. We appreciate and are so grateful for each and every one of you!!

ESTA SEMANA EN ASCENSION

Noveno Domingo despues de Pentecostes

Abre Tu Biblia, Abre Tu Corazón ❤️

Hace unos días estaba haciendo lo que probablemente muchos de nosotros hacemos más seguido de lo que deberíamos... estaba perdiendo el tiempo viendo mi Facebook. Me encontré con una publicación de otro sacerdote episcopal anunciando una nueva clase en su iglesia. El título llamó inmediatamente mi atención: ¿Qué significa ser anglicano?

Pensé: "¡Qué buena idea para una clase!" Pero enseguida me surgió otra pregunta: ¿Qué tanto conocemos realmente nuestra propia Iglesia? Venimos a la iglesia cada domingo. Oramos juntos, recibimos la Santa Comunión y celebramos las diferentes temporadas del año litúrgico. Pero, ¿con qué frecuencia nos detenemos a preguntarnos por qué hacemos lo que hacemos?

Después mi mente siguió dando vueltas y me di cuenta de que hay una pregunta todavía más importante: ¿Qué tanto conocemos realmente a Jesús?

Es posible saber mucho sobre la Iglesia Episcopal, la historia anglicana, la liturgia y nuestras tradiciones. Pero si no conocemos a Jesús, entonces hemos perdido de vista lo más importante. Y el mejor lugar para conocerlo no es Facebook, ni YouTube, ni siquiera el sermón de tu sacerdote favorito (sí, incluyendo los míos. 😊). El mejor lugar para conocerlo es la Biblia.

No me malinterpreten. Me encanta escuchar un buen podcast, participar en un buen estudio bíblico o leer un buen libro sobre el cristianismo. Todos esos son recursos maravillosos. Pero nada sustituye abrir la Biblia por nosotros mismos y permitir que Dios nos hable a través de ella.

Como episcopales, hablamos con frecuencia de la Escritura, la Tradición y la Razón. Las tres trabajan juntas, pero todo comienza con la Escritura. Es ahí donde conocemos al Dios que ha caminado con la humanidad desde el principio de los tiempos. Es ahí donde descubrimos quién es Jesús, qué enseñó, cómo amó y qué significa seguirlo en nuestro tiempo.

También sé que la vida puede ser muy ajetreada. Entre el trabajo, la familia, las citas, las actividades de los hijos, las compras del supermercado y tratar de recordar dónde dejamos las llaves del coche, encontrar un momento para sentarnos a leer la Biblia no siempre es fácil.

Esa es una de las razones por las que ofrecemos estudios bíblicos en Ascensión. Son espacios donde podemos hacer preguntas, reflexionar sobre pasajes difíciles, reír juntos, aprender unos de otros y, de vez en cuando, decir: "¡Nunca me había dado cuenta de eso!"

Algunos de mis momentos favoritos durante el estudio bíblico ocurren cuando alguien hace una pregunta que yo mismo nunca me había planteado. Esa es la belleza de leer la Biblia en comunidad. Cada uno llega con experiencias distintas, perspectivas diferentes y preguntas únicas. Y precisamente así nos ayudamos unos a otros a crecer en la fe.

Pero si por alguna razón no pueden asistir al estudio bíblico, no permitan que esa sea la razón por la que su Biblia permanezca en su librero llenándose de polvo. Lean un capítulo antes de dormir. Lean el Evangelio que escucharemos el próximo domingo. Lean con su esposo o esposa, con sus hijos, con un amigo o incluso mientras disfrutan de su café por la mañana. No tienen que entenderlo todo desde la primera vez. Lo importante es comenzar. Dios tiene una manera maravillosa de salir a nuestro encuentro exactamente donde quiera que estemos.

Tradicionalmente, agosto es conocido como el Mes de la Biblia, y ya falta muy poco para llegar. Quizá este sea un buen momento para empezar a pensar cómo les gustaría celebrarlo.

Tal vez decidan leer un Evangelio completo de principio a fin. Quizá se animen a participar en alguno de nuestros estudios bíblicos. O tal vez inviten a un par de amigos una vez por semana, preparen una taza de café, abran la Biblia y simplemente dejen que la conversación los lleve por donde Dios quiera.

Sea cual sea la forma que elijan, espero que hagan un espacio para la Palabra de Dios en su vida diaria. Porque cada vez que abrimos las Escrituras con un corazón dispuesto, le damos a Dios una nueva oportunidad para sorprendernos, desafiarnos, animarnos y transformarnos poco a poco en las personas que Él nos creó para ser.

Quién sabe... quizá la próxima vez que estén viendo Facebook, en lugar de pasar otros veinte minutos viendo videos graciosos de gatos, piensen: "Creo que es momento de abrir mi Biblia."

Tengo la impresión de que ese sería un tiempo mucho mejor aprovechado.

DÉMOSLE LA BIENVENIDA A NUESTRA NUEVA ADMINISTRADORA PARROQUIAL, SOLANGE TOURA GABA

Esta semana nos da mucho gusto darle la bienvenida a la nueva Administradora Parroquial de Ascension. Solange (pronunciado "So-lonsh") se integra con nosotros tras una trayectoria en el sector gubernamental, donde trabajó para la Inspección General Especial para la Reconstrucción de Afganistán (SIGAR, por sus siglas en inglés). Ella aporta una gran variedad de habilidades a su nuevo puesto y estamos muy felices de que forme parte del equipo de Ascension.

Solange ha vivido en distintas partes del mundo: nació en Alemania, vivió en Francia y Chad, y pasó un año en Afganistán laborando para SIGAR. En su tiempo libre le gusta ir al gimnasio, dar clases de natación a niños, escuchar música y ver series británicas de misterio.

Además de darle la bienvenida a Solange, el resto del personal de Ascension quiere expresar un ENORME AGRADECIMIENTO a todos los maravillosos voluntarios que apoyaron en la oficina durante este periodo de transición y mantuvieron todo funcionando sobre ruedas. ¡Apreciamos profundamente a cada uno de ustedes!
