Why I Am Participating in the 2026 Giving Campaign: Freedom to share

I am a member of Ascension’s oldest demographic, and a Native American elder. I want to share the aspect of old age when, at a certain point, stuff lessens its hold on you. It’s not that your material possessions are no longer important, but you no longer feel the need to have them physically in your life. Some options are to sell, donate or give away. For more substantial personal items, those might be designated in your will. For me, it is freeing to share possessions along with their stories.

When I travelled for work within Native American communities, I always carried cash to support local indigenous artists selling in non-marketplace environments. I have purchased moccasins from a hospital lobby in western Alaska to jewelry at a hard pack dirt pullout near the Pine Ridge Hospital in South Dakota. Native American artists may not be allowed to sell office to office, but the front office in many buildings where services are coordinated and offered to Native Americans will send emails that these artists are in the lobby. (You should see the stampede when indigenous foods are available in the parking lots!)

One of my more unusual acquisitions was a squash blossom necklace. It was distinctive because it was double-sided, turquoise on one side and coral on the other. My friend had returned to law school. A fellow student, a Zuni, told her about double-sided, squash blossom necklaces Zuni tribal jewelers create. The purchase was made through my friend to her Zuni friend and to the reservation artist back home. I loved wearing my necklace; it was a power piece. Seven years ago I returned that necklace to my friend. I convinced her that receiving the necklace would complete a full circle. When she wears it, she will remember me, and when her daughter wears it, she will remember both of us.

I have been sharing stories and giving away stuff for years. It is often the story that has more impact than the item itself. I sent one-third of my daughter’s Berenstein Bears book collection to one of her friends, a soon to be father. He and his wife grabbed the package to open while running errands. He told me he cried in the driveway because the Berenstein Bears were among the favorite childhood books of his twin sister and himself. I didn’t know that when I mailed them, but the sentiment of sharing had a bigger impact than the actual books.

It is both freeing and gratifying to share your stuff when it no longer has a hold on you. I like seeing those possessions find a new home. I go through stages when I feel like I could never part with certain items, but I will reach a point when I am ready to let them go. When you are ready to share your possessions, you will be able to do so gladly – and don’t forget to share the story of why an item has been important to you.

The same ideas and satisfaction can apply to financial sharing as well. I am a retired federal employee with a retirement source in the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). There is no stock sharing option in the TSP, but entities and individuals can be beneficiaries of your account. If you make Ascension a beneficiary, let someone know because the payout is not automatic. Ascension will need to complete TSP paperwork to receive your benefit. The TSP has more information on their website.

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

This week in Godly Play, we study The Great Family. The people living around Abraham and Sarah believed that there were many gods embedded in nature. Abraham and his family believed that God was everywhere, but was that really true? What if they were to go to an unknown place or experience, would God be there? They were not sure of this, but they put their faith in God's promises and found them to be true.

INTERESTED IN CONFIRMATION OR RECEPTION?

Are you interested in either being confirmed into the Episcopal Church or if you have already been confirmed in another faith being received into the Episcopal Church? Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop. If you are interested please let Padre Javier or Rev. Tracey know. Classes will begin at Ascension on Sunday Church.

ADVENT WREATHS

If you would like to make an Advent Wreath with Church Friends please sign up. We have a signup sheet in the Narthex. We will make them on November 23 after our 1-A service. The cost is going to be $20.00 per wreath. This will cover the cost of the materials.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support. To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mix-up or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!! 

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. ROCK PAINTING PROJECT

Who is interested in painting rocks to create a small winter village for display at the church this holiday season? We will need a trip to select rocks, prepare the rocks for painting, and then follow some painting patterns to create a lovely village. No experience necessary. Provide your name and contact information in the narthex if you are interested.

Por qué participo en la Campaña de Donaciones 2026: Libertad para compartir

Soy miembro del grupo de mayor edad en la Iglesia de la Ascensión y una anciana indígena nativa americana. Quiero compartir un aspecto de la vejez: llega un momento en que las cosas materiales dejan de tener tanto poder sobre ti. No es que dejen de ser importantes, sino que ya no sientes la necesidad de tenerlas físicamente contigo. Algunas opciones son vender, donar o regalar. Los objetos personales más significativos pueden incluso designarse en el testamento. Para mí, es liberador compartir mis pertenencias junto con las historias que las acompañan.

Cuando viajaba por trabajo dentro de comunidades nativas americanas, siempre llevaba efectivo para apoyar a los artistas indígenas locales que vendían sus obras fuera de los mercados formales. He comprado mocasines en el vestíbulo de un hospital en el oeste de Alaska y joyería en una parada de tierra dura cerca del Hospital Pine Ridge en Dakota del Sur. Es posible que a los artistas nativos no se les permita vender de oficina en oficina, pero en muchas instituciones donde se ofrecen servicios a comunidades indígenas, el personal de recepción envía correos avisando que hay artistas en el vestíbulo.

Una de mis adquisiciones más inusuales fue un collar “squash blossom”. Era especial porque tenía dos lados: turquesa por un lado y coral por el otro. Una amiga mía había regresado a la escuela de leyes, y un compañero suyo, de la tribu Zuni, le habló de estos collares de doble cara que elaboran los joyeros zuni. La compra se realizó a través de mi amiga, su compañero zuni y el artista en la reserva. Me encantaba usar mi collar; era una pieza poderosa. Hace siete años devolví ese collar a mi amiga. La convencí de que recibirlo cerraría un círculo completo. Cuando ella lo usa, me recuerda, y cuando su hija lo use, recordará a las dos.

He estado compartiendo historias y regalando cosas durante años. Muchas veces la historia tiene más impacto que el objeto mismo. Le envié un tercio de la colección de libros de los Ositos Berenstain de mi hija a un amigo suyo que estaba por convertirse en padre. Él y su esposa abrieron el paquete mientras hacían mandados, y me contó que lloró en la entrada de su casa porque esos libros eran los favoritos de su hermana gemela y de él cuando eran niños. Yo no lo sabía cuando los envié, pero el acto de compartir tuvo un efecto mucho más profundo que los libros mismos.

Es tanto liberador como gratificante compartir tus cosas cuando ya no te aferras a ellas. Me gusta ver cómo esas pertenencias encuentran un nuevo hogar. Paso por etapas en las que siento que nunca podría desprenderme de ciertos objetos, pero siempre llega el momento en que estoy lista para dejarlos ir. Cuando tú también estés listo para compartir tus posesiones, podrás hacerlo con alegría —y no olvides compartir la historia de por qué ese objeto fue importante para ti.

Estas mismas ideas y satisfacciones pueden aplicarse a la parte financiera. Soy una empleada federal jubilada con un fondo de retiro en el Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). El TSP no permite compartir acciones, pero sí permite designar beneficiarios, ya sean personas o instituciones. Si designas a la Iglesia de la Ascensión como beneficiaria, asegúrate de que alguien lo sepa, ya que el pago no se hace automáticamente. Tanto la Iglesia de la Ascensión como la Diócesis de Washington están trabajando para encontrar maneras de ayudar a los empleados federales a sobrellevar estos tiempos difíciles.

ESTUDIO BÍBLICO (EN INGLÉS) – LUNES A LAS 7:00 P.M.

Acompáñanos todos los lunes a las 7:00 p.m. para un tiempo de estudio, reflexión y convivencia. Todos son bienvenidos, tanto quienes son nuevos en el estudio bíblico como quienes han participado por años. Crezcamos juntos en fe y comprensión dentro de nuestra comunidad de iglesia.

LECCIÓN DE ESCUELA DOMINICAL

Esta semana en Godly Play estudiamos La Gran Familia.

Las personas que vivían alrededor de Abraham y Sara creían que existían muchos dioses presentes en la naturaleza. Abraham y su familia creían que Dios estaba en todas partes… pero, ¿sería cierto? ¿Qué pasaría si iban a un lugar desconocido o enfrentaban una nueva experiencia? No estaban seguros, pero pusieron su fe en las promesas de Dios, y descubrieron que eran verdaderas.

¿INTERESADO EN LA CONFIRMACIÓN O RECEPCIÓN?

¿Te interesa ser confirmado en la Iglesia Episcopal o, si ya fuiste confirmado en otra fe, ser recibido en la Iglesia Episcopal? La Confirmación en nuestra iglesia es un rito pastoral y sacramental que consiste en reafirmar los votos bautismales, con una bendición y la imposición de manos del obispo. Si estás interesado, por favor avisa al Padre Javier o a la Rva. Tracey. Las clases comenzarán en la Iglesia de la Ascensión los domingos durante el servicio.

CORONAS DE ADVIENTO

Si deseas hacer una corona de Adviento con amigos de la iglesia, por favor regístrate. Tenemos una hoja de inscripción en el nártex. Las haremos el 23 de noviembre, después del servicio de las 1:00 p.m. El costo será de $20.00 por corona, lo cual cubrirá el precio de los materiales.

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes están enfrentando diferentes situaciones de vida, incluyendo enfermedad. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una forma poderosa de cuidarlos. El equipo de la Ascensión trabaja arduamente para mantener actualizada la lista de oración, de manera que el clero de la iglesia pueda acompañar y ofrecer apoyo pastoral a cada persona según sea necesario.

Estamos en proceso de revisar la lista actual y trasladar algunos nombres a una lista de oración extendida. También estamos tratando de identificar quién solicitó que cada nombre fuera añadido, para mantener la comunicación y el cuidado adecuado. Les pedimos paciencia mientras avanzamos en este proceso; esperamos hacerlo correctamente, aunque puede haber algún pequeño error.

VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

La Iglesia de la Ascensión se está asociando con St. Peter’s (Poolesville) para organizar un viaje misionero y de trabajo a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos apoyado económicamente durante los últimos años.

Los organizadores esperan reunir al menos 14 participantes; si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, también habrá espacio para adultos interesados.

PROYECTO DE PINTURA DE PIEDRAS

¿Te gustaría participar en la creación de un pequeño pueblo invernal hecho con piedras pintadas para exhibirlo en la iglesia durante la temporada navideña?

Necesitaremos realizar un paseo para seleccionar las piedras, prepararlas para pintar y luego seguir algunos modelos de pintura para crear un hermoso conjunto. No se necesita experiencia. Si estás interesado, escribe tu nombre y tu información de contacto en el nártex. Puedes buscar en Google imágenes de “painted rock village” para ver ejemplos e ideas.

REIMAGINANDO EL MINISTERIO INTERGENERACIONAL

¿Te interesa fortalecer las conexiones entre generaciones en la Iglesia de la Ascensión? La Diócesis de Washington ofrecerá una clase sobre este tema el 8 de noviembre en:

Únete a este Día de Aprendizaje ofrecido por la School for Christian Faith and Leadership de la diócesis para explorar nuevas maneras de realizar ministerios intergeneracionales. Los participantes escucharán a congregaciones de la diócesis (EDOW) que están encontrando formas creativas de reimaginar la Escuela Dominical y el aprendizaje y la adoración entre generaciones.

Además, la oradora invitada Sarah Bentley Allred compartirá ideas sobre las amplias posibilidades de conectar con las generaciones actuales en sus distintos contextos.
