Faith That Holds Us Together in Difficult Times

Living as Christians in today’s world is not easy. Every day seems to bring new challenges that test our faith and our hope. From the ongoing government shutdown that affects so many of our families and neighbors, to the painful struggles around immigration and economic insecurity, it can feel as though the ground beneath us is shaking. And yet, even when life feels uncertain, we are reminded that our faith is not built on sand, it is built on Christ, our solid rock.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to live not by fear, but by faith. That doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine when it isn’t. It means choosing to trust that God is still at work among us, even when we can’t see the whole picture. It means leaning on one another, sharing our burdens, and holding each other in prayer. It means remembering that we are not alone.

Our Church Family has felt the weight of these difficult times. Some among us have lost jobs or income; others are carrying the pain of separation from loved ones, and many are anxious about the future. But even in the midst of hardship, I continue to see signs of grace, small and large acts of love that remind us of what it means to be the Body of Christ. I see it when someone offers a ride to a parishioner in need, when food is shared at a potluck, when people visit those who cannot come to church and make them feel that they still belong to our family, or when someone simply listens with compassion to another’s story.

We are a community rich in faith, and we are not without resources. Our Diocese and our parish have ways to support those in need, not only through financial help, but also through pastoral care, prayer, and fellowship. We can accompany one another spiritually, emotionally, and practically. This is what it means to be a Christian community: to stand together, to lift one another up, and to remind each other that love always has the final word.

If you are struggling—financially, emotionally, or spiritually—please do not hesitate to reach out. You can speak with me, with Rev. Tracey, or with Deacon Rosa. We are here for you. You are not alone. Sometimes all it takes is a conversation, a prayer, or a listening ear to remind us that God’s light still shines, even in the darkest moments.

Mijos y mijas, let us continue to walk together in faith. Let us pray for one another, care for one another, and trust that God will carry us through this season. Let us keep our eyes on Jesus, who walks with us even when the road is rough, and who transforms our struggles into signs of new life. The challenges may be great, but God’s love is greater still.

BIBLE STUDY IN ENGLISH – MONDAY AT 7:00 PM

Join us on Monday, November 10 at 7:00 PM in the church library for our Bible Study. We’ll continue our journey through the Book of Exodus, focusing on chapters 13:17 and 14, where God leads the Israelites out of Egypt and parts the Red Sea. These powerful passages remind us that even when the road ahead seems uncertain, God’s presence and guidance never fail. Come ready to reflect, share, and learn together as we explore how this story of deliverance still speaks to our own journeys of faith and trust today. Everyone is welcome to join the conversation!

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

This week in Godly Play, we will study The Exodus, when Moses led the People of God out of slavery in Egypt through a parting in the Red Sea. This story helps evoke the People's experience of God's elusive presence.

INTERESTED IN CONFIRMATION OR RECEPTION?

Are you interested in either being confirmed into the Episcopal Church or if you have already been confirmed in another faith being received into the Episcopal Church? Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop. If you are interested please let Padre Javier or Rev. Tracey know. Classes will begin at Ascension on Sunday Church.

ADVENT WREATHS

If you would like to make an Advent Wreath with Church Friends please sign up. We have a signup sheet in the Narthex. We will make them on November 23 after our 1-A service. The cost is going to be $20.00 per wreath. This will cover the cost of the materials.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support. To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mix-up or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!! 

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) or Angelique Cooper, our Youth Group Leader.

ROCK PAINTING PROJECT

Who is interested in painting rocks to create a small winter village for display at the church this holiday season? We will need a trip to select rocks, prepare the rocks for painting, and then follow some painting patterns to create a lovely village. No experience necessary. Provide your name and contact information in the narthex if you are interested. Google "painted rock village" images for examples and ideas.

NEED OF VESTRY MEMBERS AND CONVENTION DELEGATES

As we continue walking together in faith, I want to invite you to consider serving in leadership here at Ascension. This year, we are looking for three new Vestry members, one delegate to Diocesan Convention, and one alternate. Serving on the Vestry is an important ministry. It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about caring deeply for our church and being willing to listen, pray, and work together for the good of our community. Vestry members help guide the direction of our parish, make decisions about our ministries and resources, and support our mission to be a place where all are welcome and loved. The Convention delegate and alternate have the privilege of representing our congregation at the Diocesan Convention. They join with other Episcopal churches in prayer, conversation, and discernment about how we live out our common mission in the wider church. If you feel called to serve or if you know someone whose gifts would bless our leadership, please talk with me, Betsy, Fredis or Marcia. SILVERWARE REINTRODUCED AT OUR 1A LUNCHEONS!

The Green Team has acquired silverware for our 1A luncheons. We will use the silverware instead of the single use plastic utensils, which cannot be recycled and does not break down. La Fe Que Nos Mantiene Unidos En Tiempos Difíciles

Vivir como cristianos en el mundo de hoy no es fácil. Cada día parece traer nuevos desafíos que ponen a prueba nuestra fe y nuestra esperanza. Desde el cierre del gobierno que afecta a tantas de nuestras familias y vecinos, hasta las dolorosas luchas en torno a la inmigración y la inseguridad económica, a veces parece que el suelo bajo nuestros pies se está moviendo. Sin embargo, aun cuando la vida se siente incierta, recordamos que nuestra fe no está construida sobre arena, sino sobre Cristo, nuestra roca firme.

Como seguidores de Jesús, estamos llamados a vivir no con miedo, sino con fe. Eso no significa fingir que todo está bien cuando no lo está. Significa elegir confiar en que Dios sigue actuando entre nosotros, aun cuando no podamos ver todo el panorama. Significa apoyarnos los unos a los otros, compartir nuestras cargas y sostenernos en oración. Significa recordar que no estamos solos.

Nuestra familia parroquial ha sentido el peso de estos tiempos difíciles. Algunos entre nosotros han perdido su trabajo o sus ingresos; otros cargan con el dolor de estar separados de sus seres queridos, y muchos sienten ansiedad por el futuro. Pero incluso en medio de las dificultades, sigo viendo señales de gracia: pequeños y grandes actos de amor que nos recuerdan lo que significa ser el Cuerpo de Cristo. Lo veo cuando alguien ofrece un aventón a un feligrés que lo necesita, cuando se comparte comida en una convivencia, cuando visitamos a quienes no pueden venir a la iglesia y les hacemos sentir que todavía pertenecen a nuestra familia, o cuando alguien simplemente escucha con compasión la historia de otro.

Somos una comunidad rica en fe, y no estamos sin recursos. Nuestra Diócesis y nuestra parroquia tienen maneras de apoyar a quienes lo necesitan, no solo con ayuda económica, sino también con acompañamiento pastoral, oración y compañerismo. Podemos acompañarnos espiritualmente, emocionalmente y de manera práctica. Eso es lo que significa ser una comunidad cristiana: permanecer unidos, levantarnos mutuamente y recordarnos unos a otros que el amor siempre tiene la última palabra.

Si están pasando por un momento difícil—ya sea económico, emocional o espiritual—no duden en comunicarse. Pueden hablar conmigo, con la Rev. Tracey o con la Diácona Rosa. Estamos aquí para ustedes. No están solos. A veces basta una conversación, una oración o un oído atento para recordarnos que la luz de Dios sigue brillando, incluso en los momentos más oscuros.

Mijos y mijas, sigamos caminando juntos en la fe. Oremos unos por otros, cuidémonos mutuamente y confiemos en que Dios nos llevará a través de esta temporada. Mantengamos la mirada en Jesús, que camina con nosotros aun cuando el camino se vuelve difícil, y que transforma nuestras luchas en señales de nueva vida. LECCIÓN DE ESCUELA DOMINICAL

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes enfrentan diferentes situaciones de vida, incluyendo enfermedad. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una manera poderosa de demostrar nuestro cuidado por ellos. El personal de Ascensión trabaja arduamente para mantener la lista de oración actualizada, de modo que el clero pueda estar al tanto de cada persona y saber si necesita acompañamiento o apoyo pastoral. Estamos en el proceso de revisar la lista actual y de transferir algunos nombres a la lista extendida de oración. También estamos intentando identificar quién solicitó la inclusión de cada nombre. VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

La Iglesia de la Ascensión se está asociando con St. Peter’s, Poolesville, para organizar un viaje misionero y de trabajo a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos apoyado económicamente durante los últimos años. Los organizadores esperan reunir al menos 14 participantes, y si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, habrá espacio para adultos interesados. PROYECTO DE PINTURA DE PIEDRAS

NECESIDAD DE MIEMBROS DEL CONSEJO PARROQUIAL (VESTRY) Y DELEGADOS A LA CONVENCIÓN

Mientras seguimos caminando juntos en la fe, quiero invitarte a considerar servir en un puesto de liderazgo en la Iglesia de la Ascensión. Este año estamos buscando tres nuevos miembros del Consejo Parroquial (Vestry), un delegado y un suplente para la Convención Diocesana.

Servir en el Vestry es un ministerio importante. No se trata de tener todas las respuestas, sino de amar profundamente a nuestra iglesia y estar dispuesto a escuchar, orar y trabajar en comunidad por el bien de todos. Los miembros del Vestry ayudan a guiar la dirección de la parroquia, tomar decisiones sobre los ministerios y recursos, y apoyar nuestra misión de ser un lugar donde todos sean bienvenidos y amados.

El delegado y el suplente tienen el privilegio de representar a nuestra congregación en la Convención Diocesana, uniéndose a otras iglesias episcopales en oración, conversación y discernimiento sobre cómo vivir nuestra misión común en la iglesia más amplia.

¡SE REINTRODUCEN LOS CUBIERTOS REUTILIZABLES EN LOS ALMUERZOS DEL SERVICIO 1-A!

El Equipo Verde (Green Team) ha adquirido cubiertos reutilizables para los almuerzos del servicio 1-A. Usaremos estos cubiertos en lugar de utensilios plásticos desechables, que no se pueden reciclar y no son biodegradables.

Te invitamos al Servicio 1-Ascensión a las 10:00 a.m. y al almuerzo después del servicio el domingo 23 de noviembre. ¡Todos podemos dar pequeños pasos para cuidar la creación y lograr un planeta más saludable!
