A Historic Moment for the Anglican Communion

During Spring, I wrote about the fact that we did not have an Archbishop of Canterbury and explained a bit about the long and careful process to elect one. At that time, many people around the world wondered what direction the Church of England and, indeed, the entire Anglican Communion, would take. Now we have our answer, and what a beautiful and historic one it is!

This past week (October 3^rd ), the Church of England announced the election of Bishop Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, the first woman ever to hold this sacred office since the position was established more than 1,400 years ago. Remember that since the first Archbishop, Augustine of Canterbury, in about 597 AD, this role has been held exclusively by men. So, her appointment marks a profound moment not only for the Church of England but for the whole Anglican Communion, a global family of more than 85 million people.

For the first time in history, the spiritual leader of our worldwide communion will be a woman. This is not just a milestone for the church — it is a sign of the Holy Spirit moving among us, guiding us toward a fuller reflection of God’s image in all people.

Bishop Sarah brings an extraordinary life of service to this calling. Before becoming a priest, she worked as a nurse, eventually serving as Chief Nursing Officer for England, the highest nursing position in the nation. She was admired for her compassion, leadership, and commitment to patient care. Later, hearing God’s call to ministry, she was ordained in 2002 and became the Bishop of London in 2018, becoming the first woman ever to serve in that role. Throughout her ministry, she has been a bridge-builder, a peacemaker, and a strong voice for healing, reconciliation, and integrity in the life of the church.

Her election comes at a time when the Anglican Communion faces both challenges and opportunities. For many, her appointment is a sign of hope, renewal, and inclusion. For others, especially in more conservative parts of the world, it raises theological questions about leadership and tradition. Yet even amid these differences, this moment reminds us that unity in Christ does not mean uniformity. Our Anglican identity has always been about holding diverse voices together in faith, love, and prayer.

What touches me most about this historic event is what we are telling the rest of the world and future generations of young girls and women who have felt the call to ministry but wondered if there is a place for them at the table. Today, that door stands wide open.

May Bishop Sarah’s life and example remind the whole Anglican Communion that true leadership in the church is rooted not in power, but in service; in listening, healing, and walking humbly with God’s people. Her presence as Archbishop of Canterbury invites us to reimagine what faithful leadership looks like in a world longing for compassion and hope.

Let us keep Archbishop-designate Sarah Mullally in our prayers as she prepares for her new ministry. May her leadership be a sign that the Spirit is still at work doing new things, opening hearts, and guiding our church toward a more just and inclusive future.

Her official confirmation and enthronement ceremony will take place in January 2026 at Canterbury Cathedral. I will let you know the exact date once it is announced so that we can all join in prayer and celebration for this historic moment in the life of our Church.

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

This week in Godly Play, we learn the story of Creation. We begin to trace the elusive presence of the mystery of God in the story of God's People.

HEALING EUCHARIST — Please join us on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. for a Healing Eucharist service, when we will offer prayers for individual and collective healing. The Healing Eucharist service is one of the Episcopal Church’s Occasional Services that offers a quiet and contemplative time for reflection and respite from the stresses of everyday life and allows us to rest and be renewed in the presence of the Spirit.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support.

To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mix-up or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!!

Are you interested in either being confirmed into the Episcopal Church or if you have already been confirmed in another faith being received into the Episcopal Church? Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop. TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Un Momento Histórico para la Comunión Anglicana

Durante la primavera, escribí sobre el hecho de que no teníamos un Arzobispo de Canterbury y expliqué un poco sobre el largo y cuidadoso proceso para elegir uno. En ese momento, muchas personas alrededor del mundo se preguntaban en qué dirección caminaría la Iglesia de Inglaterra y, de hecho, toda la Comunión Anglicana. Ahora tenemos nuestra respuesta, ¡y qué respuesta tan hermosa e histórica!

La semana pasada (3 de octubre), la Iglesia de Inglaterra anunció la elección de la Obispa Sarah Mullally como la 106ª Arzobispa de Canterbury, la primera mujer en ocupar este sagrado cargo desde que se estableció hace más de 1,400 años. Recordemos que, desde el primer Arzobispo, Agustín de Canterbury, alrededor del año 597 d.C., este cargo había sido ocupado exclusivamente por hombres. Por eso, su nombramiento marca un momento profundamente significativo no solo para la Iglesia de Inglaterra, sino para toda la Comunión Anglicana, una familia mundial de más de 85 millones de personas.

Por primera vez en la historia, el líder espiritual de nuestra comunión mundial será una mujer. Esto no es solo un logro importante para la Iglesia; es también una señal del Espíritu Santo moviéndose entre nosotros, guiándonos hacia una imagen más completa de Dios reflejada en todas las personas.

Su elección llega en un momento en que la Comunión Anglicana enfrenta tanto desafíos como oportunidades. Para muchos, su nombramiento es un signo de esperanza, renovación e inclusión. Para otros, especialmente en partes más conservadoras del mundo, plantea preguntas teológicas sobre el liderazgo y la tradición. Sin embargo, incluso en medio de estas diferencias, este momento nos recuerda que la unidad en Cristo no significa uniformidad. Nuestra identidad anglicana siempre ha consistido en mantener juntas diversas voces en la fe, el amor y la oración.

Lo que más me conmueve de este acontecimiento histórico es el mensaje que enviamos al resto del mundo y a las futuras generaciones de niñas y mujeres que han sentido el llamado al ministerio, pero han dudado si hay un lugar para ellas en la mesa. Hoy, esa puerta está completamente abierta.

Que la vida y el ejemplo de la Obispa Sarah recuerden a toda la Comunión Anglicana que el verdadero liderazgo en la Iglesia no se basa en el poder, sino en el servicio; en escuchar, sanar y caminar humildemente con el pueblo de Dios. Su presencia como Arzobispa de Canterbury nos invita a reimaginar cómo se ve un liderazgo fiel en un mundo sediento de compasión y esperanza.

Mantengamos en nuestras oraciones a la Arzobispa-designada Sarah Mullally mientras se prepara para su nuevo ministerio. Que su liderazgo sea un signo de que el Espíritu sigue obrando, haciendo cosas nuevas, abriendo corazones y guiando a nuestra Iglesia hacia un futuro más justo e inclusivo.

Su confirmación oficial y ceremonia de entronización se llevará a cabo en enero de 2026 en la Catedral de Canterbury. Les avisaré la fecha exacta una vez que se anuncie, para que todos podamos unirnos en oración y celebración por este momento histórico en la vida de nuestra Iglesia.

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes enfrentan diferentes situaciones de vida, incluyendo enfermedad. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una manera poderosa de cuidarlos.

El personal de la Ascensión trabaja arduamente para mantener la lista de oración actualizada y para que el clero pueda acompañar y ofrecer apoyo pastoral a cada persona que lo necesite. Para lograrlo, estamos revisando la lista actual y transfiriendo algunos nombres a una lista extendida de oración. También estamos tratando de identificar quién solicitó que cada nombre fuera añadido, para mantener un mejor seguimiento. Les pedimos paciencia mientras realizamos este proceso; es posible que haya algún error o confusión. ¡Gracias por ayudarnos a cuidar este importante aspecto de la vida de oración de nuestra iglesia!

¿INTERESADO EN LA CONFIRMACIÓN O RECEPCIÓN?

¿Te gustaría confirmarte en la Iglesia Episcopal o, si ya fuiste confirmado en otra fe, ser recibido en la Iglesia Episcopal? La confirmación en nuestra iglesia es un rito pastoral sacramental que consiste en la reafirmación de los votos bautismales, con una bendición e imposición de manos por parte del obispo. Si estás interesado, por favor comunícaselo al Padre Javier o a la P. Tracey.

VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

La Iglesia de la Ascensión se está asociando con St. Peter’s, Poolesville, para organizar un viaje misionero y de trabajo juvenil a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos apoyado económicamente durante los últimos años.

Los organizadores esperan reunir al menos 14 participantes. Si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, habrá espacio para adultos interesados.

Se celebrará un Servicio Conmemorativo por Mary Waldron en Asbury Methodist Village, el miércoles 15 de octubre a las 11:00 a.m.

SERVICIO CONMEMORATIVO POR BETTY Y ROBERT UNTERBERGER – 18 DE OCTUBRE

Habrá un servicio conmemorativo en la iglesia, seguido por la inhumación de las cenizas en el Columbario de la Ascensión, el sábado 18 de octubre a las 10:00 a.m., en memoria de Betty y Robert Unterberger, padres de Gail Unterberger. Después del servicio, se ofrecerá una recepción en el Salón Parroquial.

REIMAGINANDO EL MINISTERIO INTERGENERACIONAL
