The 176 Variations in Psalm 119

The Rev. Kirk Alan Kubicek wrote the following sermon on the Psalm appointed for Sunday, Psalm 119. Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and I found his sermon fascinating so I am sharing portions of it:

He wrote: “Today’s psalm, Psalm 119, gives us 176 ways to say the same thing: “Happy are those who walk in the way of the Lord,” and “Oh, how I love your law!” and “All the day long, it is in my mind.” At 176 verses, it is the longest of all psalms. It consists of 22 eight-line stanzas, each stanza beginning with a sequential letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is an astonishing exercise in puzzle working, poetry, and praise. Psalm 119 calls for the kind of continued learning Paul commends in his letter to Timothy. As a subject of our recitation and meditation, it offers an entrance into a life of continued, endless prayer. So Jesus tells a story to underscore our need to pray always and not lose heart. It is what Paul elsewhere commends: “pray without ceasing….”

Don’t we often tend to be rather selfish in our prayers? We would always like immediate results – but would like those results to be centered on what we want rather than what we need. And what Jesus says we need is to pray always and not to lose heart. There is no better place to begin to pray always than with Psalm 119. One hundred and seventy-six verses reminding us to have Torah, God’s law, in our minds all day long. The word “Torah” or one of its synonyms appears in almost every one of the 176 verses: Torah, law decrees, precepts, statutes, commandments, ordinances.

….This is the dream of God as revealed to the prophet Jeremiah, “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.” God wants us to become experts in loving the law and living the law. We in the church tend to suffer grave misunderstandings about this word law. These misunderstandings come from misreading of Paul, compounded by particular Christian theologians throughout the ages. The word “law” sounds static with the sole purpose of convicting us of sin and misdoings.

Whereas a regular reading of all 176 verses of Psalm 119 would reveal a much richer range of meaning. The “law” is a treasure, a gift, really, that makes one wise and happy. The psalm is written in the first-person narrative voice, making the words of the psalm personal, words that belong to us, words that are given by God to be ours. Torah is not a static set of rules, but a map that provides a personal way of life, a guiding force, a pathway from which it is all too easy to stray but is sweeter than all alternative paths available. At its core, Psalm 119 as a source of our daily prayer and meditation directs us to endlessly reflect on the Decalogue – the fancy theological name for the Ten Commandments. The first “table” or “tablet” of the Ten Commandments focuses on our love of God; the second “table” or “tablet” focuses on our love of neighbor….

And meditating on the law day and night, as Jesus lives and instructs us to do ourselves, reminds us of our God-given responsibilities to love and care for our neighbors, especially those in greatest need. It turns out God does have a plan to care for those in greatest need: we are that plan. How wonderful it would be if all of us, every day, would read all of Psalm 119. How might the world be different if our love of God’s law was something we treasured in our hearts all day long? For Jesus this is faith: Torah in action every day.” Amen

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

This week in Godly Play, we follow last week’s creation story with the story of how Adam-Eve fell apart from God, from each other, from God’s creation and from the image of God in their deep selves. We learn how these relationships were restored.

HEALING EUCHARIST — Please join us on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. for a Healing Eucharist service, when we will offer prayers for individual and collective healing. The Healing Eucharist service is one of the Episcopal Church’s Occasional Services that offers a quiet and contemplative time for reflection and respite from the stresses of everyday life and allows us to rest and be renewed in the presence of the Spirit.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support.

To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mix-up or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!!

Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop. TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) or Angelique Cooper, our Youth Group Leader.

ROCK PAINTING PROJECT

Who is interested in painting rocks to create a small winter village for display at the church this holiday season? We will need a trip to select rocks, prepare the rocks for painting, and then follow some painting patterns to create a lovely village. No experience necessary. Provide your name and contact information in the narthex if you are interested.

OUR GUEST PREACHER ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26^TH will center on faith, hope, and love as we live in a tumultuous and dangerous time – and as we enjoy Fall Festival and look forward to celebrations of All Saint’s Day in early November. Matters of life and death. Joy and sorrow.

The Rev. Donald Fishburne, D.Min., has served churches from Florida to Maine since 1979 and came to know our Rector through their participation in the VTS Thriving in Ministry program last year and this year. Donald also knows of the wonderful ministries of lay leaders of this church while they worked with Fr. Javier on a grant application for the parish. That work may continue in 2026. Donald is also meeting with Council and staff team members over the weekend and October 27^th as our congregation grows from strength to strength.

On Sunday the 26^th we hear from Luke’s Gospel the scene of our Lord Jesus telling the parable of the exaltation of a humble person of faith, and the judgement that will come to a self-righteous man who regarded other people with contempt: “all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."   Truth 2,000 years ago, and in our own day.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture!

When: Saturday, October 25^th at 11:00 AM

Please join the Equity and Justice Committee for a tour to The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.  We will take the Metro to the Smithsonian and walk to the museum. We will meet at the Shady Grove Metro’s ticket area at 9:45 AM to arrive at the museum before 11:00 AM. People can return together or return on their own schedules. Lunch can be obtained from the “Sweet Home Café” from 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM. We have reserved timed entry tickets for this tour. There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex. If the government is still shut down, we would need to cancel the trip on October 25^th and reschedule it for a later date.

Las 176 Variaciones del Salmo 119

“El salmo de hoy, el Salmo 119, nos ofrece 176 maneras de decir lo mismo: ‘Felices los que siguen el camino del Señor’, y ‘¡Cuánto amo tu ley!’, y ‘Todo el día la tengo presente en mi mente’. Con sus 176 versículos, es el más largo de todos los salmos. Está compuesto por 22 estrofas de ocho líneas cada una, y cada estrofa comienza con una letra consecutiva del alfabeto hebreo. Es un asombroso ejercicio de ingenio, poesía y alabanza.

El Salmo 119 nos invita a ese aprendizaje constante que Pablo elogia en su carta a Timoteo. Como materia de recitación y meditación, ofrece una puerta de entrada a una vida de oración continua e infinita. Por eso Jesús cuenta una historia para recalcar nuestra necesidad de orar siempre y no desanimarnos. Es lo que Pablo también recomienda en otro lugar: ‘oren sin cesar…’.

¿No solemos ser bastante egoístas en nuestras oraciones? Siempre queremos resultados inmediatos, pero preferimos que esos resultados giren en torno a lo que queremos, y no necesariamente a lo que necesitamos. Y lo que Jesús dice que necesitamos es orar siempre y no perder el ánimo. No hay mejor lugar para comenzar a orar constantemente que con el Salmo 119: ciento setenta y seis versículos que nos recuerdan tener la Torá, la ley de Dios, en nuestra mente durante todo el día. La palabra Torá, o alguno de sus sinónimos, aparece en casi cada uno de los 176 versículos: Torá, ley, decretos, preceptos, estatutos, mandamientos, ordenanzas.

…Éste es el sueño de Dios revelado al profeta Jeremías: ‘Pondré mi ley dentro de ellos, y la escribiré en su corazón’. Dios quiere que nos convirtamos en expertos en amar la ley y vivirla. En la Iglesia solemos sufrir graves malentendidos sobre esta palabra ley. Esos malentendidos provienen de lecturas erróneas de Pablo, y se han visto reforzados por ciertos teólogos cristianos a lo largo de los siglos. La palabra ley suena como algo estático, cuyo único propósito es condenarnos por nuestros pecados y errores.

Sin embargo, una lectura regular de los 176 versículos del Salmo 119 revela un significado mucho más amplio y profundo. La ley es un tesoro, un regalo, en realidad, que hace a la persona sabia y feliz. El salmo está escrito en primera persona, lo que convierte sus palabras en algo personal, palabras que nos pertenecen, palabras que Dios nos ha dado para que sean nuestras. La Torá no es un conjunto estático de reglas, sino un mapa que ofrece una forma personal de vida, una fuerza que guía, un camino del cual es fácil desviarse, pero que es más dulce que cualquier otro sendero alternativo.

En su esencia, el Salmo 119, como fuente de nuestra oración y meditación diaria, nos dirige a reflexionar constantemente sobre el Decálogo —el término teológico elegante para los Diez Mandamientos—. La primera tabla o tablilla de los Diez Mandamientos se enfoca en nuestro amor a Dios; la segunda, en nuestro amor al prójimo…

Y meditar en la ley de día y de noche, como Jesús vivió y nos enseñó a hacerlo, nos recuerda nuestras responsabilidades dadas por Dios de amar y cuidar a nuestros prójimos, especialmente a los más necesitados. Resulta que Dios sí tiene un plan para cuidar de quienes más lo necesitan: ese plan somos nosotros.

¡Qué maravilloso sería si todos nosotros, cada día, leyéramos todo el Salmo 119! ¿Cómo sería distinto el mundo si el amor por la ley de Dios fuera algo que atesoráramos en el corazón todo el día? Para Jesús, eso es la fe: la Torá en acción todos los días.” Amén. Con cariño, Tracey

LECCIÓN DE ESCUELA DOMINICAL

Te invitamos el martes 21 de octubre a las 6:00 p.m. a participar en nuestra Eucaristía de Sanación, donde ofreceremos oraciones por la sanación individual y colectiva. Este servicio es uno de los Servicios Ocasionales de la Iglesia Episcopal y ofrece un tiempo tranquilo y contemplativo para la reflexión y el descanso del estrés cotidiano, permitiéndonos renovarnos en la presencia del Espíritu.

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por aquellas personas que enfrentan diversas situaciones en la vida, incluyendo enfermedades. Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una manera poderosa de cuidar de ellos. El personal de la Ascensión trabaja arduamente para mantener actualizada la lista de oración y para que el clero pueda estar al tanto de cada persona en la lista, sabiendo si necesita atención pastoral o apoyo adicional. Con este fin, estamos revisando nuestra lista actual de oración y trasladando algunos nombres a la lista extendida. También estamos tratando de identificar quién solicitó que se agregaran ciertos nombres a la lista. Les pedimos paciencia mientras realizamos este proceso. Esperamos hacerlo todo correctamente, aunque podría haber uno que otro error. ¡Gracias por ayudarnos a cuidar esta parte tan importante de la vida de oración de nuestra iglesia!

¿INTERESADO EN LA CONFIRMACIÓN O RECEPCIÓN?

¿Te interesa recibir el sacramento de la Confirmación en la Iglesia Episcopal o, si ya fuiste confirmado en otra fe, ser recibido oficialmente en la Iglesia Episcopal? La Confirmación en nuestra iglesia es un rito pastoral sacramental que consiste en reafirmar las promesas bautismales, junto con una bendición y la imposición de manos por parte del obispo. Si estás interesado, por favor comunícalo al Padre Javier o a la Rev. Tracey. Las clases comenzarán próximamente en la Iglesia de la Ascensión, los domingos.

VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

La Iglesia de la Ascensión se está asociando con St. Peter’s, Poolesville, para organizar un viaje de trabajo y misión juvenil a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos apoyado económicamente durante los últimos años. Los organizadores esperan reunir al menos 14 participantes, y si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, también habrá espacio para adultos interesados. Si deseas participar, comunícate con la Rvd. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) o con Angelique Cooper, nuestra líder del grupo de jóvenes.

PROYECTO DE PINTURA DE PIEDRAS

¿Te gustaría participar en un proyecto de pintura de piedras para crear un pequeño pueblo invernal que se exhibirá en la iglesia durante la temporada navideña? Necesitaremos organizar un paseo para seleccionar las piedras, prepararlas para pintar y luego seguir algunos diseños para crear un hermoso pueblito. No se necesita experiencia previa. Si te interesa, anota tu nombre y tu información de contacto en el Nártex. Puedes buscar en Google imágenes de “painted rock village” para ver ejemplos e inspirarte.

REIMAGINANDO EL MINISTERIO INTERGENERACIONAL

¿Te interesa fortalecer las conexiones entre generaciones en la Iglesia de la Ascensión? La Diócesis de Washington ofrecerá una clase sobre este tema el 8 de noviembre en:

TEMPORADA DE LA CAMPAÑA ANUAL DE DONACIONES

¡Hola! Soy Marge Kling y estoy muy emocionada de dirigir la Campaña Anual de Donaciones de este año con el apoyo del Comité de Finanzas. Soy episcopal de toda la vida y asisto al servicio en español. Después de participar durante varios años en los servicios por Zoom, sentí que era momento de volver a un espacio físico. La Iglesia de la Ascensión me atrajo por su atención a los miembros y su compromiso con la comunidad.

Durante esta temporada de donaciones, los invito a reflexionar sobre por qué ofrecen su tiempo, talentos y recursos a la Ascensión. Estén atentos al formulario de promesa de donación que será enviado a sus hogares. Si no lo reciben esta semana, pueden solicitar un sobre de promesa llamando a nuestra administradora parroquial Julie Lively (301-948-0122) o llenar un formulario en blanco disponible al final de la iglesia.

PREDICADOR INVITADO – DOMINGO 26 DE OCTUBRE

Nuestro predicador invitado el domingo 26 de octubre será el Rev. Donald Fishburne, D.Min. Su sermón se centrará en la fe, la esperanza y el amor mientras vivimos en un tiempo tumultuoso y peligroso, al mismo tiempo que disfrutamos del Festival de Otoño y nos preparamos para las celebraciones del Día de Todos los Santos a principios de noviembre. Momentos de alegría y tristeza, de vida y muerte.

El Rev. Fishburne ha servido en iglesias desde Florida hasta Maine desde 1979. Conoció a nuestro Rector a través de su participación en el programa VTS Thriving in Ministry, y también ha conocido los maravillosos ministerios de nuestros líderes laicos mientras trabajaban con el P. Javier en una propuesta de subvención para la parroquia, colaboración que podría continuar en 2026.

Durante el fin de semana y el lunes 27 de octubre, el Rev. Fishburne también se reunirá con los miembros del Consejo y del equipo del personal, mientras nuestra congregación continúa creciendo y fortaleciéndose.

El domingo escucharemos del Evangelio de Lucas, donde Jesús cuenta la parábola de una persona humilde de fe que será exaltada, y de un hombre autosuficiente que será humillado:

“Porque todo el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.” Una verdad tan poderosa hace 2,000 años como lo es hoy.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS / DAY OF THE DEAD

Acompáñanos a celebrar y honrar a nuestros seres queridos difuntos durante el Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead. Sus fotos estarán exhibidas en un altar especial en el Nártex.

Acompaña al Comité de Equidad y Justicia en un recorrido por el Museo Nacional de Historia y Cultura Afroamericana en Washington, D.C. Viajaremos en Metro hasta la estación Smithsonian y caminaremos juntos hacia el museo.

El Comité de Equidad y Justicia organiza a Vincent DeMarco, presidente de la Iniciativa de Salud de los Ciudadanos de Maryland, por medio de Zoom el jueves 23 de octubre a las 7:00 p.m. El Sr. DeMarco nos ilustrará sobre los próximos cambios en Medicaid y la Ley de Cuidado de Salud a Bajo Precio. Abordará muchos conceptos erróneos sobre estos cambios, con información actualizada.
