“Representar a Cristo Donde Quiera Que Estamos.”

We live in difficult and dangerous times, and our worship and ministries together are all the more important when there are stresses in our local communities, the nation, and the world for which we pray. Here is commentary to open two of the readings we hear today, and I am helped in this by my friend and colleague Bob Dannals, who posts online daily eDevotions.

"Thus says the Lord concerning his people: truly they have loved to wander [away from God], they have not restrained their feet." Jeremiah 14:10

The prophet Jeremiah was chosen and set apart for God in a time of trouble. As if it were not enough that the social fabric of Judah was collapsing, overwhelmed by an aggressive and expanding empire, the nation was also divided by classism – few would listen to a word of equity and justice. The people of Israel were wandering away from their beliefs and traditions… Jeremiah is calling their wandering lust into account.

We wander as well. Where have your feet been taking you lately? Are you on a journey toward God and God's purposes – or away from divine presence into your own dreams and aspirations? Today and in the week to come, may we seek moments of finding security and purpose in something larger than the angst of the day— and cast our trust into seeking and serving the Lord. We cannot do this alone; we need the support and community of our church.

Saint Paul wrote: “I am already being poured out as a libation ..." 2 Timothy 4:6

The Second Letter to Timothy concludes with this farewell. Paul’s death will be seen as a libation, a sacrifice offered to God. Now that he has fulfilled his mission, Paul is ready to receive the gift of eternal life. This gift isn't just for "heroes" of the faith but for anyone who seeks God's presence – in Word and Sacraments –and sets out to do God's work. Why should we show up and put our faithful best foot forward? Because God may use us today as a vessel of grace, pouring out God's love as a libation for those in need.

2 Timothy 4:7

My wife Sarah and I took a group of pilgrims to Rome some years ago, and we were granted admission to an active archaeological site. It is likely that Saint Paul was under house arrest there in a small apartment that was partially below street level, with windows facing the street. The straight street was one corridor to the Coliseum, and Paul would have seen foot races, as well as other traffic to the Coliseum. While under house arrest in Rome, Paul not only taught and baptized, but he also wrote letters, including the four New Testament Epistles of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.

We read in Acts 28:30-31: For two whole years Paul stayed there in rented lodging and welcomed all who came to see him. He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance! 

Although Paul and his companions felt abandoned by many who have failed to support them against their accusers, they knew that they had not been forsaken by God. Even while under arrest Paul had been enabled to proclaim the gospel, and he was confident that he would be delivered from ultimate harm and brought to the joys of Heaven.

Ours is a faith that is formed and fueled by goodness and grace. But some people in our society seek success and prosperity. Cruel power. Extreme wealth. May we see our faith to be fueled by grace and our lives as dispensers of goodness. This perspective helps us run with endurance ... to finish the race in faith, hope, love, justice, mercy, and humility, in the name of Christ Jesus, our true King.

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON

This week in Godly Play, we examine the story of the great flood and the ark that Noah built. We move beyond the creation of the world to its re-creation and begin to see the gift of water as a symbol of cleansing, redemption and forgiveness. We also learn about God's promise, through Noah, to all of us. 

INTERESTED IN CONFIRMATION OR RECEPTION?

Are you interested in either being confirmed into the Episcopal Church or if you have already been confirmed in another faith being received into the Episcopal Church? Confirmation in our church is a sacramental pastoral rite consisting of a reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on of hands by the bishop. If you are interested please let Padre Javier or Rev. Tracey know. Classes will begin at Ascension on Sunday Church.

KEEPING OUR PRAYER LIST CURRENT

Each week we offer special prayers for those who are facing a wide variety of life events including illness. Lifting up members of our community in prayer is a powerful way to care for them. The Ascension staff works hard to make sure that our prayer list remains current and that Ascension’s clergy can keep track of each person on the list to know whether they need pastoral care or support. To do so we are in the process of reviewing our prayer list and transferring some of the names on the current prayer list to the extended prayer list. We are also trying to match the name of the person on the prayer list with the person who requested that the name(s) be added. Please be patient with us as we work through this process. We hope to get it all correct but anticipate that we may have a mix-up or two. Thank you for helping us with this important part of our church prayer life!!  

TRIP TO PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

Ascension is partnering with St. Peter’s, Poolesville, to arrange a youth/work trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation which we have supported monetarily over the past couple of years. The organizers are hoping to get at least 14 people to participate and if not enough youth sign up there will be room for interested adults as well. If you are interested please contact Rev. Tracey (tforfa@ascensionmd.org) or Angelique Cooper, our Youth Group Leader.

ROCK PAINTING PROJECT

Who is interested in painting rocks to create a small winter village for display at the church this holiday season? We will need a trip to select rocks, prepare the rocks for painting, and then follow some painting patterns to create a lovely village. No experience necessary. ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN SEASON

Hello! I am Marge Kling. I am thrilled to lead this year’s Giving Campaign with the help of the Finance Committee. I’m a long time Episcopalian and I attend the Spanish Service. After attending online Zoom church for several years, it was time to come home to a physical space. Ascension appealed to me because of its in-reach to members and outreach to the community. This giving season, I invite each of you to consider why you give of your time, talents and treasures to Ascension. Please be on the lookout for a pledge form mailed to your home. If you don’t receive one this week, you may request a pledge envelope by calling our office administrator Julie Lively (301-948-0122) or by filling out a blank form available at the back of the church. OUR GUEST PREACHER TODAY will center on faith, hope, and love as we live in a tumultuous and dangerous time – and as we enjoy Fall Festival and look forward to celebrations of All Saint’s Day in early November. Matters of life and death. Joy and sorrow. The Rev. Donald Fishburne, D.Min., has served churches from Florida to Maine since 1979 and came to know our Rector through their participation in the VTS Thriving in Ministry program last year and this year. Donald also knows of the wonderful ministries of lay leaders of this church while they worked with Fr. Javier on a grant application for the parish. That work may continue in 2026. Donald is also meeting with Council and staff team members as our congregation grows from strength to strength. 

Today, Sunday the 26th we hear from Luke’s Gospel the scene of our Lord Jesus telling the parable of the exaltation of a humble person of faith, and the judgement that will come to a self-righteous man who regarded other people with contempt: “all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."  Truth 2,000 years ago, and in our own day.

Vivimos en tiempos difíciles y peligrosos, y nuestra adoración y ministerios en comunidad son aún más importantes cuando existen tensiones en nuestras comunidades locales, en la nación y en el mundo, por los cuales oramos. A continuación, comparto un comentario para introducir dos de las lecturas que escuchamos hoy, con la ayuda de mi amigo y colega Bob Dannals, quien publica diariamente sus eDevotions en línea.

El profeta Jeremías fue elegido y apartado por Dios en un tiempo de angustia. Como si no bastara con que el tejido social de Judá se estuviera desmoronando, abrumado por un imperio agresivo y en expansión, la nación también estaba dividida por el clasismo: pocos querían escuchar una palabra sobre la equidad y la justicia. El pueblo de Israel se alejaba de sus creencias y tradiciones… Jeremías los llama a rendir cuentas por su deseo de vagar lejos de Dios.

Nosotros también vagamos. ¿A dónde te han llevado tus pasos últimamente? ¿Estás en un camino que te acerca a Dios y a sus propósitos, o te alejas de su presencia divina persiguiendo tus propios sueños y aspiraciones? Hoy, y durante la semana que viene, busquemos momentos para encontrar seguridad y propósito en algo más grande que las preocupaciones del día, y pongamos nuestra confianza en buscar y servir al Señor. No podemos hacerlo solos; necesitamos el apoyo y la comunidad de nuestra iglesia.

La Segunda Carta a Timoteo concluye con esta despedida. La muerte de Pablo será vista como una ofrenda, un sacrificio presentado a Dios. Ahora que ha cumplido su misión, Pablo está listo para recibir el don de la vida eterna. Este don no es solo para los “héroes” de la fe, sino para cualquiera que busque la presencia de Dios —en la Palabra y en los Sacramentos— y se disponga a hacer su obra.

¿Por qué debemos presentarnos y dar lo mejor de nosotros con fe? Porque Dios puede usarnos hoy como instrumentos de su gracia, derramando su amor como una ofrenda para quienes lo necesitan.

“He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, he guardado la fe...”

— 2 Timoteo 4:7

Mi esposa Sarah y yo llevamos hace algunos años a un grupo de peregrinos a Roma, y se nos permitió entrar a un sitio arqueológico activo. Es muy probable que san Pablo estuviera bajo arresto domiciliario allí, en un pequeño apartamento parcialmente bajo el nivel de la calle, con ventanas hacia la vía pública. Esa calle recta conducía al Coliseo, y Pablo habría visto carreras, así como el tránsito hacia ese lugar. Durante su arresto domiciliario en Roma, Pablo no solo enseñó y bautizó, sino que también escribió cartas, entre ellas las cuatro epístolas del Nuevo Testamento: Efesios, Filipenses, Colosenses y Filemón.

Leemos en Hechos 28:30-31:

“Durante dos años completos Pablo se quedó en una casa alquilada y recibía a todos los que iban a verlo. Anunciaba el reino de Dios y enseñaba acerca del Señor Jesucristo con toda libertad y sin ningún impedimento.”

Aunque Pablo y sus compañeros se sintieron abandonados por muchos que no los apoyaron frente a sus acusadores, sabían que no habían sido desamparados por Dios. Incluso estando preso, Pablo fue capacitado para proclamar el evangelio, y estaba seguro de que sería librado del mal definitivo y llevado a los gozos del cielo.

Nuestra fe se forma y se alimenta de la bondad y la gracia. Pero en nuestra sociedad hay quienes buscan el éxito y la prosperidad, el poder cruel y la riqueza extrema. Que nosotros veamos nuestra fe como encendida por la gracia y nuestras vidas como instrumentos de bondad. Esta perspectiva nos ayuda a correr con perseverancia… a terminar la carrera en la fe, la esperanza, el amor, la justicia, la misericordia y la humildad, en el nombre de Cristo Jesús, nuestro verdadero Rey.

MANTENIENDO ACTUALIZADA NUESTRA LISTA DE ORACIÓN

Cada semana ofrecemos oraciones especiales por quienes enfrentan diferentes situaciones en la vida, incluyendo enfermedades.

Elevar en oración a los miembros de nuestra comunidad es una forma poderosa de mostrar cuidado y apoyo.

El equipo de Ascensión trabaja con dedicación para asegurarse de que la lista de oración se mantenga actualizada y que el clero de Ascensión pueda dar seguimiento a cada persona en la lista, sabiendo si necesita atención pastoral o apoyo adicional.

Por ello, estamos revisando la lista actual de oración y trasladando algunos nombres a una lista extendida. También intentamos identificar quién solicitó que cada nombre fuera incluido, para mantener una mejor organización.

Les pedimos paciencia mientras llevamos a cabo este proceso. Esperamos hacerlo correctamente, aunque podría haber algún pequeño error.

VIAJE A LA RESERVA PINE RIDGE

La Iglesia de la Ascensión se está asociando con St. Peter’s, Poolesville, para organizar un viaje juvenil y de trabajo a la Reserva Pine Ridge, a la cual hemos brindado apoyo económico durante los últimos años.

Los organizadores esperan reunir al menos 14 participantes. Si no se inscriben suficientes jóvenes, habrá espacio disponible para adultos interesados.

PROYECTO DE PINTURA DE PIEDRAS

TEMPORADA ANUAL DE LA CAMPAÑA DE DONACIONES

¡Hola! Soy Marge Kling. Estoy muy emocionada de dirigir la Campaña de Donaciones de este año, junto con el Comité de Finanzas.

Soy episcopal de muchos años y asisto al Servicio en Español. Después de participar durante varios años en la iglesia por Zoom, sentí que era momento de regresar a un espacio físico. Me atrajo Ascensión por su apoyo interno a los miembros y su labor de alcance comunitario.

En esta temporada de generosidad, los invito a reflexionar sobre por qué ofrecemos nuestro tiempo, talentos y recursos a la Iglesia de la Ascensión.

Pronto recibirán un formulario de compromiso por correo.

NUESTRO PREDICADOR INVITADO DE HOY

Hoy nuestro predicador invitado centrará su mensaje en la fe, la esperanza y el amor, mientras vivimos en un tiempo turbulento y peligroso —y al mismo tiempo disfrutamos del Festival de Otoño y nos preparamos para las celebraciones del Día de Todos los Santos a comienzos de noviembre. Temas de vida y muerte. Alegría y tristeza.

El Rvdo. Donald Fishburne, D.Min., ha servido en iglesias desde Florida hasta Maine desde 1979, y conoció a nuestro rector gracias a su participación en el programa Thriving in Ministry del Seminario Teológico de Virginia (VTS) el año pasado y este año. Donald también ha conocido los maravillosos ministerios de los líderes laicos de esta iglesia al colaborar con el Padre Javier en una solicitud de subvención para la parroquia —un trabajo que podría continuar en 2026—. Además, Donald se reunirá con miembros del Consejo Parroquial y del equipo pastoral mientras nuestra congregación sigue creciendo en fortaleza y fe.

Hoy, domingo 26, escuchamos en el Evangelio según Lucas la escena en la que nuestro Señor Jesús cuenta la parábola del exaltamiento del humilde y el juicio del hombre orgulloso que despreciaba a los demás:

“Porque el que se engrandece será humillado, y el que se humilla será engrandecido.”

Una verdad de hace 2,000 años… y también de nuestros días.
