UPDATED 10/12/2020 After weather interfered with our planned start on 10/11, and working within the guidelines of Bishop Wright and the Diocese of Atlanta, St. Matthew’s will offer an on-campus outdoor Morning Prayer service beginning Sunday October 18 at 10:45 a.m. and lasting no more than an hour. This service will be live streamed to our FB page. The pre-recorded service we had been using on FB has been replaced by the livestream.

Musings -- October 16, 2020

But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the message of faith that we preach). (Romans 10:8, CEB Translation)

St. Paul is quoting Deuteronomy (Deut. 30:14) when he writes this to the Christian community in Rome, but it is a theme that runs through both Hebrew and Christian scriptures.  Confessing your beliefs in words goes along with acting in accordance with your beliefs (the Word dwelling in the heart). It is a key theme in the Letter of James, which we are studying on Thursday nights (see announcement for Thursday with the Text, elsewhere in this newsletter).

Sometimes, especially now, we may have a hard time seeing God’s acting in the world through others. And if this is true for you, it can certainly be discouraging. However, I would encourage you to (1) to keep looking, (2) to ask God to show you where God is actively present and (3) to ask God if perhaps God’s desire is to be present to someone through YOU!

I was blessed this week by God affirming to me that he is active in the ministry of others to others. And it was not anything I did; rather it was from stories that parishioners shared with me about what THEY are doing. I realized in their stories, that in the mystery of God, events come together with such amazing timing, and with such profound pouring out of God’s love, you know in your heart that you have seen the Holy Spirit at work.

It is no secret that the times we are in are more challenging than they were a year ago. And the constant stress of the news can make it hard for us to see where goodness still flourishes. But I am here to tell you that it does. Sometimes we just need God’s help to see it. So, keep looking for those examples (the Word is in the heart), and share those stories to encourage others about God’s faithfulness (the Word is in YOUR mouth). You will not only find blessing for yourself; you will be a blessing to others. And that, beloved community of St. Matthew’s, is the Gospel!

In Peace,
Mother Liz+
