Sing Along!
Wavin’ Flag by K’naan
K’Naan is a singer, songwriter, rapper, hip hop artist, and social activist. In his song “Wavin’ Flag”, he expresses his hopes of freedom for refugees and the people of Somalia, and explores the power that young people have.
What can you do now to help others? What struggles do you have in your own life? What can you do now to help yourself? What do you think you might be able to do to help yourself and help others when you get older and stronger?
K’Naan is also an author: you might want to read his book When I Get Older: The Story Behind ‘Wavin’ Flag’. K’Naan (whose name means “traveler” in Somali) spent his childhood in Mogadishu surrounded by a loving family which included his aunt, one of Somalia’s most famous singers, and his poet grandfather. When K’Naan was thirteen, he and his family fled war-torn Somalia and immigrated to Toronto. Learning about other people’s experiences helps us understand the world, and how we might help to make it a better place.
