April Economic Overview 
US Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist on Current Economic Conditions  
  • The economy will slow in 2023 compared to a strong 2022.
  • The economy is stronger at this point than most expected. If there is to be a recession this year, it has been pushed back later than anticipated.
  • Inflation was 5% annually in March. On monthly basis, up just 0.1% from February. Inflation is cooling, but still high, especially core inflation.
  • Inflation far surpasses strong 4.2% annual wage growth.
  • We added a very strong 236,000 jobs in March and the labor force grew +480,000.
  • But if we had the same participation rate we had pre-pandemic, there would be more than 1.8 million more workers in the labor force.
  • There were 9.9 million job openings as of the end of February, 4 million more than unemployed workers.
