OC Board of Supervisors Chairman Donald P. Wagner at
Anaheim Chamber Government Affairs
| |
On Friday, OC Board of Supervisors Chairman Donald P. Wagner was the keynote speaker at the Anaheim Chamber Government Affairs meeting. He covered a wide range of topics with meeting participants, including the County budget outlook, homelessness, public safety, veterans cemetery in Anaheim Hills, his opposition to the recall of Anaheim Councilwoman Natalie Rubalcava, and the November election outlook.
Of the $9.3 billion County budget, only about 10%-15% is discretionary while the remainder are pass-through funding from the State and Federal governments. The discretionary spending funds a wide variety of County services, including the Sheriff, District Attorney, Public Defender, parks, animal shelter, roads, and flood control. Due to both the State budget deficit and the passage of Proposition 1, the County faces reduced funding for mental health and homeless services; Prop 1 alone took $174 million out of County mental health and homeless wraparound services to move toward housing unit construction.
Chairman Wagner also spoke of the importance of public safety as one of the most legitimate, if not the most legitimate role of government, as how Orange County voters have continually demonstrated. He stated the Board of Supervisors is prioritizing the funding of the District Attorney's office and the Sheriff's Department. He noted that 7 of the 10 safest cities in California were in Orange County, and 5 of those are patrolled by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
The State Department of Veterans Affairs has completed a study approving the Anaheim Hills veterans cemetery site. The site is 283 acres, with approximately 140 acres for the veterans cemetery and approximately 140 acres for a public cemetery. The federal government's formula estimates that 50 acres of cemetery space would supply 100 years of burials. Interments at the Anaheim Hills cemetery site could begin as early as 2026 or 2027.
Thank you to Mama Roscoe's Pizzeria in Anaheim Hills for providing lunch to the group!

The Power of Volunteering Changes Lives, Shapes the Future:
The Dayle McIntosh Center Relaunches Volunteer Program Leading by Example
| |
They say what goes around, comes around. Volunteering at The Dayle McIntosh Center (DMC) www.daylemc.org punctuates the adage, with continuous service leadership examples rooted in the passionate advocacy of its employees as Orange County’s only Independent Living Center celebrating forty-seven years serving people with disabilities and older adults. The long-standing peer-based State of California 501(c) (3) non-profit organization opened its doors in 1977 as a result of volunteer activism, creating opportunities for the community, while uniting through service. This distinguished foundation is the springboard for the 2024 relaunch of the DMC Volunteer Program, being revived after the pandemic temporarily shut down the program. Open to individuals 18 and older the program welcomes everyone - people with disabilities and older adults, those with all levels of volunteering experience, and individuals needing to fulfill community service hours through a church or school. Volunteers are given necessary training and support, along with flexible times of service through normal business hours and are expected to go through a Live Scan background check and wear a mask as DMC is an organization working with high-risk and immunocompromised individuals. | |
