Women have made significant contributions to society long before any formal recognition. However, Women’s History Month offers an opportunity to highlight the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

The Town of Bloomfield joins the federal government, state government and hundreds of public and private organizations in paying tribute to this important annual commemoration and celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society, including women’s struggles for the right to vote and equality under the law.

Women’s History Month, observed March 1st through March 31st, celebrates and encourages studying the vital role women played in American history, culture, and society. Women’s History Month began in 1981 when Congress authorized the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, Congress authorized the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
