Head Start's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic


This brief by the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) describes how Head Start responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by examining the challenges grantees faced, how they pivoted to address these challenges, and the supports they received from the OHS to serve the children and families in their care. The study’s findings can help leaders develop future supports for Head Start grantees and guide future research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the child care and early education (CCEE) system.

Notice of New Funding Opportunity: State-Tribal Partnerships to Implement Best Practices in Indian Child Welfare


The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) has announced a new Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to assist and promote coordinated efforts among state courts, child welfare agencies, and tribes. The funding is meant to develop and implement best practices that minimize the disparate treatment experienced by Indigenous families.

May Marks National Foster Care Month


Last week, the administration issued a proclamation recognizing May as National Foster Care Month, which raises awareness of and honors youth living in foster care. FNS Seeks Comments on SNAP Customer Service Strategies


U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is requesting comments on the proposed collection of information for the Understanding States' SNAP Customer Service Strategies study. This is a new information collection and the study will seek to describe the key characteristics of State Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) agencies’ customer service strategies and identify promising practices. Comments will be accepted through June 26.

FNS Updates List of Approved State Plans for Replacing Stolen SNAP Benefits


Congress passed a law in late 2022 to help SNAP participants who are victims of card skimming, cloning and other similar methods. All states have now submitted plans to implement this law with FNS, which is in the process of approving them.

HHS Awards an Additional $8.2M to Expand Pilot Diaper Distribution Program


The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through ACF, announced an additional $8.2 million to support the first-ever federally funded diaper distribution program for low-income families. This new allocation brings the total funding for the pilot to $16.2 million, which will support projects in a total of twelve states and two tribes.

Grant Opportunity for State-Level WIC Agencies


This RFA will provide up to $20 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding (Section 1106 of Subtitle B, Title I of ARP) to an external entity that will provide financial, technical, and evaluation support to state agencies administering Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The goal is to facilitate data-sharing activities that support targeted outreach and streamlined certification processes aimed at increasing WIC participation and retention. The closing date is June 28.
