Debt Ceiling Bill Passes in the House and the Senate
Yesterday evening the Senate passed a deal to suspend the national debt ceiling limit through January 1, 2025, The bill is now expected to be signed into law by the White House. In exchange for a package of spending cuts and policy changes, including changes to work requirements in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). On May 31st, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3746, the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. The Senate also passed the bill on June 1st on the heels of the passage in the House. COVID Investments in Child Care: Supporting Children, Families, and Providers
The ACF’s Office of Child Care released a report on COVID investments in child care. COVID child care relief funds stabilized the sector, lowered costs of care, increased compensation, created new child care slots, and increased provider payment rates.

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) Child Nutrition programs released a final report that describes trends in the participation of various food programs during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, including Seamless Summer Option (SSO) and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

The ACF's Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) releases a final report on their use of learning cycles to strengthen fatherhood programs. A new OPRE brief, authored by MDRC, summarizes findings and recommendations from a study designed to measure and compare the added value of models used to predict participant success within career pathways programs. The study team aims to explore the tradeoffs of complex prediction models and whether they are worth it.
