FNS Releases Report on Trends in SNAP Participation Rates: FY 2016–2018

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) released a new report as part of a series on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation rates, which estimate the proportion of people eligible for benefits under federal income and asset rules to those who actually participate in the program. This report presents rates for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018, comparing them to rates for FYs 2016 and 2017. Among other key findings, the report notes that SNAP served 82 percent of all individuals eligible under federal rules in 2018.

FNS Announces Availability of Non-Competitive Technology Innovation Grant Funding in FY 2021

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) recently announced the availability of non-competitive technology innovation grant funding, which will be distributed on a formula basis beginning in Fiscal Year (FY) 2021. FNS will accept applications from all eligible state agencies administering Child Nutrition (CN) programs and is also requesting comment on this non-competitive approach. This opportunity replaces the competitive CN Technology Innovation Grants (TIG) previously administered by FNS in FYs 2017 and 2019. Funding is anticipated to be announced in late spring 2021 and distributed to state agencies by late summer 2021. Written comments must be received on or before June 21.

This webinar recording from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) that occurred on May 7, 2021 is the first in their series on the Fiscal Year 2021 Process Technology and Improvement Grant (PTIG), featuring a discussion of basic information and application requirements for the PTIGs.

WorkRise 2021 Request for Proposal

Diverse disciplines and Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) scholars are encouraged to submit for the WorkRise 2021 Request for Proposal (RFP) that will support research on pilots and other innovative pathways for boosting upward economic mobility for low-wage workers. WorkRise will invest $2.5 million in research and pilot studies that develop rigorous evidence to inform and drive effective action toward a labor market that strengthens economic security and accelerates upward mobility for workers with low wages, particularly Black workers and other workers of color. The RFP is open to all researchers, employers, worker advocates, practitioners, policymakers, and other organizations with compelling project ideas that will build credible and actionable knowledge that strengthens changemakers’ ability to advance workers’ interests and mobility. The deadline for submission is June 27.

Stakeholder Session SNAP-Ed Webinar

Join this webinar for SNAP-Ed State and Implementing Agencies featuring opening remarks by Jessica Shahin, Associate Administrator, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In late December 2020, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 mandated a 2% set-aside from SNAP-Ed state allocations for FY 2021. The funds were to be used for administration, training and technical assistance, and pilot projects. The webinar will explain how FY 2021 final allocations were calculated, with clarification on changes due to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and include a presentation of technical assistance and special projects to be implemented using 2% funding.
