WesternU College of Pharmacy’s Ray Symposium
illuminates the impact of pioneering women doctors
| | |
Today, when a woman announces her intention to go into medicine, she is greeted with cheers and praise, congratulations and admiration. Back in the Victorian Era, however, the reaction was exactly the opposite.
The 19th annual Ray Symposium, organized by Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Pharmacy and held online March 20, 2025, featured New York Times bestselling author Olivia Campbell, who wrote Women in White Coats: How the First Women Doctors Changed the World of Medicine.
Her book focuses on three of the first women to earn medical degrees: Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman MD practicing in America; Elizabeth “Lizzie” Garrett Anderson, the first licensed woman physician practicing in England; and Sophia Jex-Blake, the first woman MD practicing in Scotland.

The California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) will honor two members of the WesternU College of Pharmacy family with prestigious awards.
CPhA named fourth-year College of Pharmacy student Quyen Nguyen (left) as the 2025 Student Pharmacist of the Year and WesternU COP Dean and Professor Emeritus Daniel Robinson, PharmD, FASHP, (below) as the 2025 Pharmacist of the Year. They will receive their awards at the Western Pharmacy Exchange April 4-6, 2025 in San Diego, California.

“The College of Pharmacy proudly celebrates two individuals who have received coveted awards from the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) for 2025,” said COP Dean Sunil Prabhu, BPharm, PhD. “First, Dean Emeritus Robinson receiving the ‘Pharmacist of the Year’ is a testament to his lifelong efforts to improve the role of the pharmacist in our state. Having previously received the CPhA Lifetime Achievement Award a few years ago, it goes to show that Dr. Robinson’s impact on our profession still continues to be strong.
“For Quyen to receive such an honor of being the ‘Student Pharmacist of the Year’ tells me that we are doing things right at this College,” Prabhu added. “She has made the College and our University extremely proud. As she graduates in May of this year, Quyen’s achievement will serve as an inspiration to future cohorts of our student pharmacists. It is indeed a great feather in her cap and the recognition by CPhA of her commitment to the profession of pharmacy and her selfless efforts to promote the profession is proof of that.”

Sébastien Fuchs, MD, PhD, from COMP’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, co-authored an editorial manuscript with 25 members of the American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) from academic institutions nationwide.
The manuscript, published in the Journal of Investigative Medicine, underscores the critical role of vaccination in improving public health. Titled "The American Federation for Medical Research Maintains Commitment to Decades of Support of Vaccine and Vaccination Research to Improve Public Health," the editorial highlights the AFMR's 85-year legacy of advocating for biomedical research since its founding in 1940. This message serves as a call to continue supporting and advancing cutting-edge research in the United States. One of the AFMR’s missions is to “Educate the public and government leaders about medical research and the importance of its support.” (https://afmr.org).
