Urging Hochul to Restore Local Law Enforcement Cooperation with ICE

This week, I sent a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul opposing a provision in New York's FY27 Enacted Budget that prohibits local law enforcement agencies from entering into 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Cooperation between federal, state, and local law enforcement is essential to keeping our communities safe, and this ban limits the ability of sheriffs and local agencies to access tools and resources that help protect New Yorkers. In my letter, I urged Governor Hochul and the State Legislature to repeal this provision and restore local law enforcement's ability to partner with federal authorities when they determine it is in the best interest of the communities they serve.

Talking Inflation, Affordability, and Relief for Americans on Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street

I also joined Fox Business to discuss how high-tax states like New York continue making life more expensive for hardworking families already struggling with inflation and high energy costs. New Yorkers pay some of the highest gas taxes in the country on top of rising energy prices, while Albany continues spending at record levels with little accountability for where taxpayer dollars are going. Families across Upstate New York are being squeezed from every direction and deserve policies that lower costs, support American energy production, and put working people ahead of government expansion.

As your representative in Congress, my top priority is championing legislative initiatives that benefit you and your families. Each week, I review numerous bills and letters, engaging in thorough discussions with members of our community to determine which actions to support and address your needs. Below are a few bills I recently cosponsored.

H.Res. 891, Supporting the goals and ideals of "National Rural Health Day": This resolution would support the goals and ideals of National Rural Health Day. Rural health facilities face many challenges that make it difficult for them to remain open. This resolution recognizes and acknowledges the difficulties rural communities go through and would promote commonsense efforts to assist rural healthcare centers.

H.R 283, Panama Canal Repurchase Act of 2025: This bill would authorize the President and Secretary of State to assess options to either restore U.S. ownership or operational control of the Panama Canal from the Republic of Panama. The Panama Canal remains one of the world’s most strategically important economic trade routes and plays a critical role in U.S. national defense. This legislation would ensure that opportunities to strengthen U.S. economic and national security through this international waterway are safeguarded, as well as long-term strategic interests.

H.R. 652, the Small Business Investor Tax Parity Act of 2025: This bill closes a tax code gap that puts Business Development Companies (BDCs) at a disadvantage relative to other investment vehicles. Under current law, investors in REITs and S-Corp banks can claim the 20% Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction but BDC investors cannot despite their similar pass-through structure. Aligning BDCs’ tax treatment makes BDC investments more attractive and will ultimately increase private capital flow into lower middle market and small business lending in the economically distressed communities that BDCs often serve.

Memorial Day at the Samson Cemetery

This Memorial Day, our team attended the 2026 Memorial Day Service at the New York State Veterans Cemetery in the Finger Lakes at the invitation of New York State Department of Veterans’ Services Commissioner Viviana DeCohen, U.S. Marine Corps, and Executive Deputy Commissioner Joel Evans, U.S. Navy. Prior to the ceremony, we joined veterans, families, and local leaders for a ribbon cutting ceremony dedicating the cemetery’s new maintenance building, which will help support the continued care and upkeep of this sacred resting place for our nation’s heroes. Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, and we remain committed to supporting the veterans and military families who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

Special Olympics in Newark

Our team recently visited the Newark Central School District for the Wayne-Finger Lakes Region Special Olympics Track & Field Event, hosted in partnership with Special Olympics New York. The event welcomed athletes and coaches from 29 schools across the region and showcased the determination, sportsmanship, and hard work of student-athletes. Superintendent Susan Hasenauer highlighted the leadership of Athletics Director Jonathan Mastin in coordinating the event and recognized the hundreds of volunteers, staff members, community partners, and local law enforcement officers who helped make the day possible. From the ceremonial torch run to the enthusiastic support from spectators throughout the competition, the event was a wonderful celebration of achievement, inclusion, and community spirit.

Meeting with USGS Officials in Oswego

Also, our office was able to join the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and House and Senate partners in Oswego to learn more about the ongoing work to protect Lake Ontario and preserve Upstate New York’s world-class fisheries. The visit focused on efforts to combat invasive sea lampreys, which threaten lake trout and other native fish species across the Great Lakes, along with research aimed at improving fish stocking and breeding to strengthen the region’s ecosystem for future generations. The group also received an update on current work underway in the Salmon River in Altmar to stop lampreys before they migrate into Lake Ontario. Researchers showcased ship and land-based operations used to monitor water quality, collect samples, and support fisheries research throughout the region. Protecting the Great Lakes is critical for the communities, outdoor traditions, and local economies that rely on these waters across Upstate New York.
