Tilopa and Naropa: The Founders of the Kagyu Lineage

On Monday, Tim will continue our exploration of the beautiful text, Supplication to the Kagyu Gurus. In particular, we’ll be focusing on the founders of our Kagyu tradition, Tilopa and Naropa.

These extraordinary beings form the basis for what many consider the most profound and potent path to enlightenment: the practice of Mahamudra, the “Great Seal.” Tilopa and Naropa stand out in Buddhist history as exemplars of how to devote one’s life to full awakening. Their life stories have inspired and guided dedicated students of the path for centuries.

Please join us.

Quote of the Week

"Mahamudra cannot be shown.

Just as who can show space to whom?

Likewise, there’s nothing to show in the nature, mahamudra.

Relax and rest in the unaltered basic nature.

If the bonds are loosed, there’s no doubt you’ll be freed."

— Ganges Mahamudra, Tilopa

Tomorrow: Lhabab Düchen

Honoring the Buddha’s Return

On Sunday, Buddhists around the world celebrate one of the four “holy days” in the Buddhist calendar, Lhabab Düchen. Lhabab Düchen commemorates the Buddha’s return to the human realm after having taught his mother in the “god realm of the thirty-three.”

The Buddha’s mother, Mayadevi, died just one week after her son’s birth and was reborn in Indra’s heaven. To repay her kindness and liberate her, the Buddha spent three months teaching in the realm of the gods.

This is considered an especially auspicious day for practice, when the effects of positive and negative actions are traditionally said to be multiplied 100 million times.
